Phobias and You.

Irrational fears - what are they, how do they manifest and how can you overcome them? What kind of tactics have you employed to avoid the subject of your phobia? Talk it out here.

Immersion therapy is available on request.

[No immersion therapy, thanks. He got quite enough of that back home. And you know what? It didn't help. Entomophobia? Bugs. Everywhere. Bugs in the caravans. Bugs in the tent. Giant bugs they had to fight. Claustrophobia? Caves. Sewers. Small, damp, dark passages that may or may not have an exit point. Acrophobia? How many narrow crumbling ledges has he breathlessly scooted across? Too many.]

You know, fear is supposed to be healthy. If you're afraid of the things that could actually kill you, you live longer. There's nothing irrational about that!

[ She's no counselor - heck, half the time she doesn't understand what the prison residents are actually talking about, but she can try at least. Talking helps, or so she's read. ]

Perhaps not, but there is such a thing as disproportionate fear... or fear that will kill you in the process of avoiding the very thing you're afraid of.

Mmmmm... [He frowns, thinking about that.] What is "disproportionate"? I'm pretty sure my fears are proportionate to how very much they could kill me.

That's reasonable, I suppose. I'm not very familiar with the concept of fear, I'm afraid. [ Is that a joke? You decide! ]

That must be nice... [He gives her a sideways look, not sure if he believes that.] Fear keeps a guy from dying. Or ... not. Because it seems my world is just full of dark caves and giant bugs and daemonic soldiers. [And he's pretty sure at least half of the potions and elixirs went to healing him. And he felt bad about that. Really.]

[ It's mostly true. She functions in a different way than humans, fundamentally so. Sometimes it's difficult to relate. ]

Mmn, I suppose there is an evolutionary aspect in it. If that's the case and your fears really are rational and sound of mind, why are you here?

Because what if they're not rational? No one else seems to be bothered when we go tromping through caves. Not even Gladio, and he's huge. You'd think the biggest guy in the group wouldn't want to risk getting stuck in some narrow little passage, right? But no! I'm the smallest, and am one step away from a panic attack because the ceiling is low. And I don't even have to duck!

[Unlike Ignis and Gladio, who towered over him and Noctis, and never seemed bothered by anything. Add in fighting in a tiny space, trying to shoot quick little demons and not his friends, and well. Maybe it was rational, but maybe he was just a wimp.]

It is a conundrum... perhaps it's a matter of a change in perspective. Disproportionate but rational fear may simply be fear that puts you in greater danger than the subject of that fear.

[ She's thinking aloud now, scientist as she is. Well, semi. ]

Oh. Well, sure... [His brows scrunch up, a sure sign that he's thinking really hard.] Can - can you maybe dumb that down for the plebs?

Ah, I'm sorry — what I mean is, maybe phobias are the fear that put you in more danger than the thing you're afraid of.

[ Did... did that clear anything up. ]

[It did.]

Thanks. I guess that makes sense. Just, not sure what I should do about it. Or if it's even possible.

Yyyeah.... Got any? [If only.] Maybe someone who can do the whole hypnosis thing? I always wanted to try that.

I'll see what I can do. Perhaps we can pull someone in with those skills..?

That would mean stealing them from their world, though, wouldn't it? [He frowns at the idea.] Doesn't seem fair. To them, I mean.

You've had therapists within your ranks before. With a little luck, perhaps I could liberate one of them without taking them from their home world.

I guess that would be more kind. At least they'd get to be here, in this ... virtual paradise. [A little bit of sarcasm to go with the grin.] So it's true then? We're all just laying in pods somewhere?

[ She nods, solemnly. ] I've seen it myself. [ On account of her being part of the team in charge of keeping them there, oops. ]

Your physical bodies are well taken care of, I assure you.
