Note: this is set in the Motherless Child timeline, wherein Remus and Severus adopt an orphaned werewolf. Johnny is almost four in this drabble.

"Happy birthday, love." Remus stood waiting in the living room, wearing a soft wool jumper that brought out the green in his hazel eyes. The table was set with his favorite foods, and a small wrapped package rested atop his plate. "I sent Johnny over to Hengewood House for an overnight with Hermione and Neville."

"I thought she was due in a few weeks? Surely they - "

"She said she needed the practice." Remus stepped forward, smiling faintly. "And we need the practice in being alone."

Severus drew him close and kissed him. "I think we'll remember soon enough."
