WHERE: Liberty Island
WHEN: 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
RATING: TBD/Medium?
STATUS: Complete
She was neck deep in the frigid ocean again, being dragged in from underneath with Elliot holding her hand as tightly, as securely as he could to keep her from sinking all the way in. She held his too, of course. Clung to it like it was a lifeline, because right then, that was exactly what it was. And she was fighting. Of course she was fighting. As hard as she could. But the one hand from below was soon joined by another, and then another and another and they pulled Rae as Elliot tried desperately to cling from the other side. Dream-Rae screamed as loudly as she could, terror taking her as the creatures gave a particularly hard tug and completely submerged her, aside from the arm connected to the hand that Elliot was holding. It was like something clicked in dream-Rae's head. If she let Elliot keep holding onto her hand, if she let him keep trying to save her, he'd be pulled down with her. Rae downright refused, refused to be the reason he died. So, with a desperate look, she met his eyes, said "goodbye" and let go of his hand. The last thing she remembered seeing before she sank was the defeated, desolate look on Elliot's face. And then down she went. Down into the depths of the Hudson Bay. She awoke with a start. Sat straight up in her sleeping bag, looking around at her friends slumbering bodies, and realized that it had only been a dream. You're okay. You're on Liberty Island… she told herself, blinking back the tears that had formed in her eyes in her sleep, and her eyes darted around, eventually falling upon the wall clock. It was almost three in the morning. At least that's what the clock said. Rae had gone to bed at eleven or so. Just like every other night, she chatted a bit with Sarah and a little bit more with Eli, though they tried to keep their voices down seeing how David had just passed out, sleeping like a baby. Systematically, each of them zonked out, but Rae was last, falling asleep at just past midnight. She hadn't really slept for too long. The nightmare had been horrible. Nearly as horrible as the incident itself had been. Rae wrapped her arms around herself, shaking her head and trying to dispel the chilled feeling that came over her. This was stupid. Life or death situations were part of the deal now, if you wanted to survive. How was she expected to go back to the mainland when everyone else woke up if she couldn't get over this? She didn't know. But one thing she did know was that she wouldn't be able to get back to sleep right away. The dim light of the moon streaming through the window provided her enough vision to dig around in her backpack for her book light, and she gathered one of the books that Elliot had brought her, that she hadn't finished while she was in the infirmary. At the very least, she needed something to occupy her mind for now… to keep it from that dream. |
