MISTLETOE: DAY 2

Gooseberry's not free of this ridiculous kissing ~~game~~ plague yet.

Starting Tuesday morning, the mistletoe has largely been scared out of the lodge by Mr. Hightower, and has moved outside. Students wake up, only to find their way to breakfast and class blocked by yet more of the winding plant.

Just like yesterday, anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS

Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout campus, hanging from branches and lamp posts, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

It has not moved inside cabins, but may be located on their exterior.

Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire just in general???)

Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» South: Ebonhide: Of all the houses, heavily wooded Ebonhide is hit the worst.

» West: Coppertale: The safest campground. Just avoid the lamp posts and be careful of awnings.

The gardens are Marty's natural stomping grounds. So, she was running through and then suddenly she was not running anymore. Ouch? That was a weird feeling. The bag she was holding spilled everywhere revealing a half-knitted scarf and a ball of yarn, some homemade lipstick and a jar of bugs that she was not going to use to feed the Venus Fly Trap in the greenhouse......ahem.

"A little assistance, please?"

There's no rest for the kiss patrol. Olivia had gotten fairly good at avoiding the mistletoe in the lodge so of course it spread outward and discovered new places to grow. Figures.

"Me, me, I'm here," Olivia chirps quickly. The gardens are not one of her favorite spots, but she has already given into being on the look out for fellow students in trouble. It's only a bonus that it's now Marilyn in trouble. "You're in a sticky spot, huh?" And okay, maybe Olivia is still having fun making jokes.

Hearing a voice, familiar too, Marilyn sighs in relief. Seeing Olivia is definitely welcome, very much so, and she's only slightly embarrassed that the pretty girl is catching her in such a position.

Granted, at least Olivia doesn't know this is her fault.

"Oh thank goodness! A savior," she says, resisting the urge to add beautiful in there. Her game is not that strong. "It would appear I am. And hoping you'll take pity on me and free me with a kiss?"

In hindsight, maybe taking a walk by herself in the gardens was a bad idea. Or was it a cunning plan? Either way, Pippa manages to get herself stuck under a sprig of mistletoe in a quiet little corner of the gardens... but hopefully it's not so quiet that nobody will pass by, since it's a chilly day and Pippa "forgot" her mittens. Oh no! Where's a cute boy when you need one?!

Sy doesn't even take Herbology, he's just trying to get away from all this goddamn mistletoe. Which, okay, not the brightest idea to try to get away from a nefarious smooching hell-plant by going into the gardens. It was the shortest route to Ribbonfin, and he's kind of curious to see if Rosy's set the camp on fire yet.

He's just sticking to the paths and watching out for overhanging branches, not paying attention to anything else, and might've stomped right by this girl if not for her bright red hair. Her bright red hair and... very familiar face. Sy spent twelve hours obsessed with that hair and face.

Pippa flinches slightly at the sound of Sy's voice. As always, he sounds rude and aggressive -- far from the knight in shining armour that she imagined coming to her aid. Ugh, why couldn't he have just stomped on past and ignored her?? This is totally messing up her plans.

"Nothing. I'm not -- it doesn't matter," she says defensively, hoping he won't notice the mistletoe above her head. "I'm just... waiting. For a friend."

Who doesn't like the gardens? Sometimes, Avery walked through the even when they were kind of out of her way to wherever she was going because she liked them so much. It was calm and peaceful, and dang it was 5 in the morning it was completely empty.

And then she spotted it, just half a second too late. Oh no, no no. This is awful. Avery grabs her wand, performing a quick warming charm before repeatedly half-yelling "Help. Help. Help."

Passing through the gardens on his way to check on his beehive (magic lets the hive thrive and function year-round, but he's got to be diligent!) Cecil passes beneath the mistletoe and jerks to a halt. He immediately knows what's happened, but looks up and sighs heavily anyway. Because it's early (and who would even be here this early apart from him?) and it's cold. And this isn't going to be a fun morning.

He wishes he'd pushed harder for the return of the buddy system yesterday.

Cecil had expected to be found eventually, but the sound of Avery's empathetic voice just a few minutes later is a very welcome surprise! He turns awkwardly in his suspended position look at her, greeting the girl with a very warm and very relieved smile. "Me too," he confirms sheepishly, then reassures her, "But I haven't been here long and...here you are to save me? So I'm lucky. All things considered. Thank you, Avery."

He leans forward a little to offer Avery his cheek. She isn't tiny like Riley (she's actually quite tall, just not as tall as him) or wearing bright red lipstick like Riley, but he still doesn't want to risk a repeat of yesterday. While he waits to be freed, he considers what she said and frowns slightly. "You weren't out here too long, were you? This stuff is even more problematic outside. If Mr. Hightower can't figure something out, we'll need to re-implement the buddy system or something..."

The gardens have been great hunting grounds for the Smooch Squad, and Riley is roaming and flitting and flipping as much as she can through them for like the last hour. Riley, go to class.

But Riley's not going to go to class. Not when she hears the familiar Russian voice of her best friend and BIRTHDAY GIRL!!!

"KATYA BABY, WHERE ARE YOU??" she calls out, a little pout on her face as she glances around half-assedly. "YOUR HEROINE IS ALMOST HERE!!"

In a weird way, the mistletoe is kind of a godsend for Zoey. It makes her slow down a little? Forces her to pause and rest? I don't know.

She cuts through the gardens on her way back to Ribbonfin from Transfiguration and finds herself trapped in a weird little corner. A few minutes pass with no ready savior, so she widens her scarf and warms up her peacoat with a couple spells, wraps herself on up, and sits down with her back to the pole of an informational plaque.

What a nice view. This is fine.

Maybe she'll just stay here for a few minutes.

Kinda cozy, actually...

Okay, now her classes are over for the day and she's just fucking around.

Very open to multiple rescuers. Or just people to watch her recreationally play around like a child in a very extreme gymnastics class. Feel free to witness/assist/make suggestions to Roxie during any part of the totally valid and completely scientific method of testing out the full set of circus-child stops here:

Flips : Totally acceptable as long as you were off the ground or on hands while passing underneath.
Walking on hands : Fine. Not stuck. Probably not sustainable for most people, but definitely useful knowledge.
Rope strung over mistletoe : Also fine. Ten minutes of actual productive practice accomplished.
Rope strung under mistletoe : Stuck. Very stuck. Balance actually easier than usual. Can hang upside down like a bat. Visually delighted.
