MISTLETOE: DAY 2

MISTLETOE: DAY 2

Gooseberry's not free of this ridiculous kissing game plague yet.

Starting Tuesday morning, the mistletoe has largely been scared out of the lodge by Mr. Hightower, and has moved outside. Students wake up, only to find their way to breakfast and class blocked by yet more of the winding plant.

Just like yesterday, anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS
  1. Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout campus, hanging from branches and lamp posts, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

  2. It has not moved inside cabins, but may be located on their exterior.

  3. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

  4. If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

  5. The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

  6. Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire just in general???)

  7. Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Trails: The mistletoe makes use of lamp posts and overhanging branches.

» Gardens: A veritable warzone of kissing plants.

» North: Azurcest: Enough trees to be dangerous, especially on the approach.

» East: Ribbonfin: Is nowhere safe???

» South: Ebonhide: Of all the houses, heavily wooded Ebonhide is hit the worst.

» West: Coppertale: The safest campground. Just avoid the lamp posts and be careful of awnings.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Special shout-out to Josie for giving us the idea for the mistletoe epidemic. ♥

Cecil and Avery

Cecil had expected to be found eventually, but the sound of Avery's empathetic voice just a few minutes later is a very welcome surprise! He turns awkwardly in his suspended position look at her, greeting the girl with a very warm and very relieved smile. "Me too," he confirms sheepishly, then reassures her, "But I haven't been here long and...here you are to save me? So I'm lucky. All things considered. Thank you, Avery."

He leans forward a little to offer Avery his cheek. She isn't tiny like Riley (she's actually quite tall, just not as tall as him) or wearing bright red lipstick like Riley, but he still doesn't want to risk a repeat of yesterday. While he waits to be freed, he considers what she said and frowns slightly. "You weren't out here too long, were you? This stuff is even more problematic outside. If Mr. Hightower can't figure something out, we'll need to re-implement the buddy system or something..."

"Oh no problem. I got lucky too. Zeke was out and freed me before I froze to death. Hardly had to wait at all." She blushed a little, cheeks flushed both from cold and mild embarrassment. She had not touched so many people in such a short amount of time nearly ever, but she was finding that she didn't mind it all that much. Minus the getting stuck and having to wait part, that sucked. She hated that.

He offered his cheek and Avery smirked, having to stand just a bit taller to reach his cheek in order to kiss it and free him. Not too many people were much taller than Avery so it was kind of nice and a little amusing to have to stand on her tip toes and opposed to bend down. Once he's freed she makes sure to step back so that he can step out! "I've only been stuck outside once and was freed in a few minutes so I'm okay. We should probably re-implement the buddy system anyway. These things seem to be growing."

Visibly relieved, this time for Avery's sake, Cecil nods. He has no idea what Zeke was doing in the gardens so early in the morning either, but he's glad that the girl wasn't left stranded for long. "I guess we're both lucky, then," he says with another smile, taking the kiss on the cheek and stepping out from under the mistletoe. He's ready to be away from the stuff. "And you might be right about that; I'll mention it to Maggie and check with Mr. Hightower to see how things are going. At the very least, we should all try to carry our journals until this is over."

He pauses, glancing in the direction he'd been intending to go before looking back at Avery. "Are you planning to head to your camp? I can walk you back, if you want. Just in case." The bees would probably not hold being late against him.

Avery was honestly just a morning person. She went for runs, she liked the solitude of the early hours. It was a nice, quiet time to reflect. Winter mornings were particularly beautiful, too, so she liked to roam around a bit alone. This was the first time she had ever been particularly thankful that other people were out, too. "The journals! That's a good idea. I would have done that but I had no idea this stuff would be growing outside now." She said, sighing.

Glancing towards the path to her camp, Avery hesitated. "I was, yeah." She replied, frowning a bit. She didn't want to inconvenience Cecil, as he was clearly probably heading to do something so early. "I'll be fine, though, honestly. It's not that far and I'll be careful!"

"I don't think anyone did," Cecil points out levelly, "It's unbelievable how quickly it's spread." Honestly, he's not certain how Mr. Hightower plans to get rid of it now, but...he trusts the older wizard to find a way. He's not sure what they'll do otherwise.

His dark eyes follow Avery's briefly in the direction of Ribbonfin, which isn't far at all, before he turns his attention back to her. He understands why she's refusing, but...given the circumstances, a mild inconvenience seems worth the trouble. "You're sure?" he asks and insists earnestly, "I don't mind. I'm just here to check on the bees; I don't think they're going anywhere." He won't push any more than this, but he wants her to know that he means what he's saying too before they part ways.

A nod was given in response to his assessment. "Definitely. I mean, this is obviously something no one has actually seen before, there was no way to know it'd be so crazy." She really, really hoped Mr. Hightower fixed it soon, though. She liked to walk places alone and journal-less.

Given she was the type of person to consider other people's feelings far more frequently than her own, Avery has a hard time grappling with this. Everyone knew Cecil was just a really nice guy, one of the sweetest, and so part of her felt like even if he did mind he would never admit it. "But what if you get stuck again on your way back? We'll have to just keep walking each other back and forth!"

"There's a risk of that either way," Cecil says reasonably with a small shrug, "We could part ways right now, I could walk around the corner, and be stuck all over again. At least this way, you'll definitely get back to Ribbonfin." With Avery still hesitating, he decides to make the decision instead. He offers her a friendly, hopefully reassuring smile and nods in the direction of the nearby campy before starting to walk. "C'mon. It won't take long. Besides, what else are Head Boys for?"

"True, true." She agreed, nodding her head. This is why she was Ribbonfin and not something like Coppertale or Azurecrest. She got stuck in her inability to make decisions based on trying to factor everything into the equation, take everything into consideration. Cecil, fortunately, made the decision for her. Looking intensely relieved, Avery brightened up considerably and nodded. "You're not wrong there, Cecil. Head Boys are definitely there for a lot of other reasons but this one might be the nicest. Escorting damsels in distress and all that." Even though technically she had saved him.

This earns a soft laugh from Cecil, who is clearly thinking the same thing, "I don't think you were the one in distress, Avery. But, I'm happy to help, anyway."

"Well no one has to know the Head Boy was in distress except us." She said, giving him a smirk and laughing as well.

"Oh, I doubt anyone would be all that surprised," Cecil admits with an easy smile; he's never been proud and he doesn't seem bothered by the idea of people knowing that he made a mistake or that he needed help. "Though, hopefully, this will be the last time. At least, the last mistletoe-related time."
