Hearts, Shamrocks and Symbols (EDITED Mar 06)

If you never used some of these symbols, make a private entry in your journal and test them in the journal entry itself and in the entry comments. Make sure they work before using this staff :)
Take notice of this post's tags in order to find it in the future. "Search by Tag" shortcut is on the side bar.

*EDIT Mar 06, 2008* [info]nostariel shared some helpful info in comments, so I am adding it in. Quick hint: not everyone's default font can display all the symbols, so you might want to wrap this entry with Arial or Lucida Sans Unicode or something, just to make sure. The smiley faces didn't show up for me until I changed my default. :'(

Here and here are interesting links about how symbols may display for different users.

Do I need to add Greek Letters & Symbols or are we good?

Comments

:D greek letters and symbols would be good too!

XD man, these little html things are cool! X3

Amazing what we can do with them, hehe!

Hopefully you'll be using greek letters if I post them :)

Any idea if there's a better looking checkmark than the square root symbol? Thanks!

Yes, but there aren't too many options. Look here for what I could find on that.

Quick hint: not everyone's default font can display all the symbols, so you might want to wrap this entry with Arial or Lucida Sans Unicode or something, just to make sure. The smiley faces didn't show up for me until I changed my default. :'(

Thank you so much! I had no idea that some symbols may not show up for some users. Makes me wish all staff was standardised all across, hehe. I've added your comment to the entry itself, hope it's OK. Let me know if anything needs changing :)

P.S. I went and looked at public entries in your journal and they are totally cool and are a sort of thing this comm is about. It would be sweet if you'd posted links to them (or more :) here so more people could read them.

I had no idea that some symbols may not show up for some users.

I didn't know either, until a few weeks ago when (after one of many browser/system crashes - I'm on Windows 98) I stopped being able to see the ♥ symbol. (;_;) I've been using Verdana as my browser font for ages, I miss it terribly now that it only works on Latin text (and Tahoma is having the same problem now, argh!). I've been trying everything I can to fix it, and in the meantime have been trying out other fonts to see if there's any suitable substitute. Today I found DejaVu Sans, which should do until I find a fix, although I don't think it's as pretty at smaller sizes. :(

And feel free to link to or summarize/quote any of my public entries you think people might find useful, I don't mind at all!
