We gotta get outta this place
((Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]supermans_dead, and [info]lost_myself for the first part. Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]haganenomore, and [info]puddle_of_grace for the second part.))

Winry deposited her bags from the market on the kitchen counter of her apartment once she got home. "Sheska, can you put the groceries away?" she called into the spare room that acted as a library for Sheska's many, many books. "I have to get to the clinic, we've got a patient looking for some prescription refills."

She grabbed her cellphone while she talked, punching speed dial for Russell's cell.

Meanwhile, Russell was fussing with things in the clinic, making sure everything was clean and in place, while taking breaks from studying various medical textbooks.

Someday, eventually, he was determined to qualify as an M.D., but that would be a while off yet.

He answered his phone. "Russell."

"Hey, Russell, you in the clinic or outside?" she asked, grabbing a juice for herself out of the fridge before heading for the door. "We've got a new incoming patient. Name's Ken Hidaka, needs a refill on some prescriptions that look to be pretty powerful stuff."

"Anti-anxiety, and I recognized one anti-psychotic on his list. I'm bringing the list down the hall now. I want to go through all the medicines and see what we're working with."

Thankfully, the clinic was just down the hall. Still. One day, they'd have their own building for that, but that might be forever from now if Ed's heart couldn't be fixed.

She opened the door. "Russell?" she called, hanging up the cell. "I'm gonna call Ed, I got that list here."

Russell made a low whistle when Winry mentioned what the new patient was on, and stood, walking over to meet her as he pocketed his phone, and took the paper.

Holy shit. He only recognized maybe a third of this stuff and HOLY SHIT.

Through all of this, Edward's been quiet, working on studying the chemical formulas and gathering the materials he'd need. He glances over at Ken at that half-hearted 'all right'.

"If it makes you feel any better, Ken," he says quietly, "most of us in these apartments have an idea of what it's like in some way or another. It's worth it to keep moving forward. Doesn't always seem like it is, but it is."

Russell glanced at Ed, then back to Ken. "What's more, you're not the only war vet in this building either. You're not alone or with people who don't have a clue what it's all like. And you're not just with a bunch of doctors, either. The people we're talking about, they're not just our friends, they're our family, and in some cases, ourselves too. We wouldn't be doing anything or giving you anything that we wouldn't give our own family."

The whole 'giving a shit' thing was kind of a foreign concept for Ken to get used to. There was Mare, Max...and Jei, in his own odd, psychotic way. Yohji contacted him sometimes. Then there was Banzai and The Cat, but that was all. No contact with his family (as much as his mother tried to call him, or Mary when he didn't answer...which was always...) and no friends. He didn't have the energy to deal with them.

"Whatever happens, it can't get any worse." He shrugged, noncommittal. Either he'd go section eight, to use the familiar phrase, or he wouldn't. The thought of ending up like Swanny was kind of disconcerting, but...at least there was his promise to Ran to keep him from that. It was the only reason he even bothered anymore.

"Detox might not be fun, though. If it gets too bad, let us know and we'll get in touch with someone we know who can help ease the process a bit more," Russell said. "In the meantime, we'd like to see you as an inpatient of sorts." He glanced at Ed now as he spoke. "There's an opening in the second building for a place to stay, isn't there?"

Winry looked at Russell a moment, then back at Ken. "He's right, detox won't be fun, actually," she corrected. "But that's what we're here for, is to make it as easy as possible."

She glanced at the information on benzo again, then looked at Russell. "St. John's Wort works well with benzo and benzo withdrawl. It says most other anti-depressants are generally bad news. Let's give him some of that to combat the depression."

Next she looked to Ed. "You got that diazepam?"

Elizabeth was only arriving under duress from an alternate. A male her. Yeesh, that was a weird concept. (And she'll be embarassed later when she realizes she admitted he was good-looking. Ah, teenage girls.)

She looked up at the two apartment buildings and the sprawling gardens and lawn around them. "He hasn't done too bad for himself, it looks like," she commented idly.

The 'idly' was more a cover-up for how much pain she was in by that time. Her insides felt like they were trying to crawl out through her skin.

The door opened, and a six-year-old girl, who Ed should know by now since she's lived there the last 2 years, opens the door. Her blonde hair is up in pigtails, and her gold eyes study them curiously. Behind her is her twin sister, Annamarie, with slightly darker hair in an identical style, and eyes more of a grayish-gold.

"Hi, Mister Ed!" Emily said, holding the door open, studying him. "You're the one like Papa, right?"

In other words, a homunculus.

At any rate, she doesn't give him time to reply before another question comes out. Ah, kids. "Who's the lady with you? She looks like Uncle Ed. And like you too. Is she your sister? I didn't think Uncle Ed had sisters besides Aunt Winry and Mama."

Winry looked at Ed. "Did she show up alone, or was there anyone with her?" she asked. "And was there any indication about where her portal home was? Someone oughta go get her brother before he has an aneurysm. You Elric males tend to be fussy over the females."

"Right. Stick myself in an out of the way spot until you guys decide if you need me for anything it is." With that, Ed took a quick look around before picking a place that he hopefully won't need to be kicked out of.

"I already told you, getting you back might take a bit of work since we need to find your portal first. Along with arming you with a PINpoint for future times. And if you think Winry's gonna let you out of here before she's ready for you to leave, you're out of your mind."

Now he's distracted by Winry. "I think I just answered some of what you just asked. She's apparently also been having to put up with her version of Tringham being fussy at her, because she started wailing about it at one point when she, um, got emotional at me."

Elizabeth opened one eye as Russell fussed around with the pressure cuff. She wasn't totally succumbed to the effects of morphine just yet, but she was getting there.

She forced herself to not shy back, but she couldn't quite keep the shame-faced scarlet coloring from her cheeks. "At least this part of a hospital stay doesn't change in different worlds," she said quietly.
