Who: Kono, Shannon, later Neal, and then Moz and Alex
What: Finding the Burkes and telling Neal, Moz, and Alex
Where: Prison yard
When: Last night directly after Connor makes his mark and leaves.
Warnings: Mentions of character death, grief, and Neal tears (they deserve their own warning)
Note: The Burkes died in Peter's tower and Neal will be screaming from it when he sees his parents were eated. Anyone outside is free to hear him if they wish.
The nights had gotten to be where they were too quiet. Zombies approaching the prison weren't nearly as frequent as they had been when Kono first arrived in Everett and took a post on sentry. The amount of survivors in town definitely attracted the flesh eaters, but they also helped curb the numbers significantly too. There were some big players on the outside of the prison walls and most of them were friendlies. Some even used to live inside the prison so they had their own interests in disposing of zombies whenever they could. Ever since Connor was turned the quiet unnerved Kono rather than comforted her. Instead of thinking they'd been doing a good job ousting the zombies, she felt like something was on the brink of going down. She took more shifts and remained more alert than usual. Zombies at least gave a warning with their moans or the dragging of their feet on the ground. Vampires, she'd learned, were quick. They were quiet and tricky. They didn't have one track minds most of the time.
Faith and Dimitri were both gone. Derek was in and out since he was dealing with the new member of his family's pack. Chris was around, but she hadn't heard from him in a while. Kono and Peter had taken up security since Dimitri had left but she kept what Spike had told her in the forefront of her mind at all times. Connor would be different, but he'd know the prison and use it against them. He'd helped design some of the security measures and spent more time on duty than most. No one had heard a peep out of him yet, but that was what worried Kono the most. The loud ones were easy to predict. The quiet ones acted without warning and she had no idea what to expect out of Connor the vampire.
Struggling to keep her eyes focused on the never-ending mass of trees outside her tower, Kono rubbed her eyes and took a short break to drink some of the water she'd brought up with her. John Ross had kept her company a lot while he and Christopher stayed when Krissy was hurt and right after her change, but the two cowboys had gone back to the inn.
There was a pack of stale crackers she started munching on before returning to her position again. Just as she was about to get back into place she heard a faint bump come from somewhere. At first she couldn't place the source, but Kono went to the edge of her perch and looked out towards Peter's tower that was a good ways away from hers. She didn't see anything or anyone at first but after a couple of seconds she saw a slight figure stand up and move towards the edge. The figure was carrying something and then when he turned his head towards her, Kono gasped. Connor. He'd been inside the prison and now he was in Peter's tower.
He'd jumped out of the tower and had run off into the darkness before she was able to even think about firing off a shot or to see who he was carrying. Forgetting her gun or that she should alert everyone, she was scrambling for her radio and calling out to her friend.
"Burke, what's going on? Was that who I thought it was?"
No answer.
"Answer me, Burke. Give me something to know you're alright."
Nothing.
"Peter! Answer me!"
It was rare that she ever called Peter by his first name when they were on duty. When she didn't receive an answer for a third time Kono holstered her radio and grabbed her handgun then practically jumped out of her tower to the ground. She ran as fast as she possibly could and darted up the ladder to see the damage. Half expecting Peter to be holding his head and coming to, she didn't expect to see Elle inside with him and leaning against his chest. Their hands were on top of one another and their eyes were closed as if they were sleeping.
"Peter? Elle?" Her voice was quiet now and she approached cautiously but quickly. Nearly taken aback by the dual puncture wounds on both of their necks, she forced herself to check for heartbeats. Their bodies were still warm but there was no pulse in either of them. Looking more closely she saw bruises starting to form on Peter's face.
Backing away from their bodies, Kono's hand shook as she covered her mouth. They were dead. Connor had killed her best friend here and his wife. Tears burned in her eyes but she couldn't take her eyes off of them.
