Heather nodded, wanting to be comforted by Abigail's words. Having to move on again sounded nothing short of a nightmare. Just getting here had been hard enough and her and Jed had almost starved to death more than once. She didn't want to have to move on again. She was struck with the burden of her cousin once more but she had long ago accepted that the two of them were meant to protect each other.
Bound by blood, he would protect her. That was what Vera had said in the note she had left her granddaughter. But it wasn't just Jed protecting Heather, she protected him too. She had been protecting him when she told Tony that he hadn't made it to Everett. Tony hadn't expressed any condolences and with good reason. Heather was afraid to trust anyone.
"Sounds good."
After Abigail left, Heather finished cleaning up the place and Jed retreated to his own little office in the bunker where he could do as he pleased. He would bury the bodies, or what was left of them, after he was finished playing. Heather didn't press for details. Instead she just went on making her own sleeping area as comfortable as possible. It was warm and dry and secure and that was better than they had in awhile.
"Maybe we can make it here."
Jed walked past with a body slung over his shoulder. Heather smiled.
