Heather was clean but still starving. She could tell Jed was hungry too. He never said anything but she could hear the deep rumble of hunger from his stomach from time to time. They had managed to sneak in and out of the projects pretty quickly. Heather loathed having to put dirty clothes back on after she had finally managed to get a hot shower but it was the best she could manage. With Jed she just hosed him down in the parking lot and hoped that nobody looked out their window. From what she heard the projects were pretty private anyway. People there minded their own business. It was an ideal place for Heather to escape to once in awhile and grab a hot shower.
There was something about Abigail and Heather had picked up on it right away. The way they had met in the first place would have probably been strange to anyone else but Heather hardly batted an eye at the fact that Abigail had killed someone. You did what you needed to in order to survive. Jed hadn't seemed to mind finishing the job of burying the body either as Abigail had rested and her and Heather had chatted. She had initially meant to put as much distance between them and Abigail as possible. She was the exact age of the girls that Jed especially liked to take the chainsaw to. This girl had already seen enough trouble to have to run screaming from Heather's cousin. Yet for some reason she didn't put that distance there. She kept expecting Jed to snap and attack Abigail but he never did. There was something about her, something that was different from other girls. Heather just didn't know what it was about her that Jed found so unappetizing.
Not that Heather was complaining. She welcomed having a friend close to her own age again. It wasn't really a possibility for her because of Jed's extracurricular interests. The only exception to that had been Shelley for obvious reasons. She was different too and Jed seemed to respect that, he had no interest in butchering her. Anybody else though, especially pretty girls in their early twenties seemed to send her cousin into a frenzy. It wasn't just girls, he would kill the men too it was just that he made short work of the men and toyed with the women. It was just his way.
Heather tried not to listen when they screamed and some of them, boy could they scream. For hours even, for days. Sometimes back in that old mansion in Newt, Heather thought about just killing herself and getting it over with. She was isolated from the rest of civilization even before the zombies had come to take over and there was nothing she could do about it. Jed was family and he was her burden now, her responsibility.
She approached the prison, it's long dark shadow looming over. It looked exactly as she had imagined it would. All dark and foreboding with tall fences and barbed wire. Heather ran her fingers along the chainlink as she walked towards the entrance where she would meet Abigail.
