Once the girls were packed into the truck, Sam turned the keys in the ignition and pulled a u-turn back into Everett. Sam's eyes never stopped sweeping the area as he drove. Their luck was hard to believe, but the further the two girls delved into conversation, the more Sam loosened his grip on the steering wheel. He was doing his best to leave all the tension and anxiety with the welcome sign. The greater the distance between them and the border, the better Sam felt and it showed. He let out a slow sigh of relief, keeping it absolutely silent. Every so often, he would glance over towards the two briefly. It looked like Molly had made a new friend. He could tell that Molly was excited to talk to Rogue, and the feeling seemed to be mutual. He knew what Molly could do, but he was plenty curious about Rogue's abilities. Maybe it had to do with why she wore gloves.
Sam tuned out of the conversation entirely while they passed through the projects. Taking the shortest route possible, Sam was beginning to feel confident that the rest of the ride would be an uneventful one, but the moment a man wearing a lab coat stepped into the street directly in the truck's path, Sam realized just how wrong he was. He stretched an arm out in front of Rogue and Molly as he slammed his foot on the brake. The truck came to a stop. The Leviathan did not. There was plenty of distance between them, but it was closing in on them. Sam glanced over his shoulder quickly.. throwing the truck into reverse, and trying to navigate around a corner backwards wasn't going to cut it. There were only two options in Sam's mind. Risk totaling the truck, and possibly getting them all killed, or hitting the gas. There wouldn't be a repeat of this winter. He wouldn't let that happen. The second he turned his head towards Molly, she must have known exactly what was going through his head, because she gave him the nod he was looking for.
Well shit.
Sam's eyes flickered from Molly, to Rogue, and from Rogue, to the Leviathan. His eyes narrowed and his jaw locked tight. "Hold on," was all he ground out before he gripped the steering wheel with both hands and pressed all the way down on the gas pedal.
There was no telling for sure, because it all happened so fast, but the Leviathan looked surprised before it disappeared underneath the truck with a loud thud. The cab bounced, but came to a quick stop that wasn't the driver's doing. Sam threw his arm out in front of the girl's again, and if it wasn't for his seat belt, he would have bashed his forehead right off of the steering wheel. The shock of the abrupt stop wore off immediately. Not because Sam was quick on the draw, but because Sam felt the truck starting to slowly tip sideways. The fucker was going to roll them. He practically ripped his seat belt off, and shoved his door open. Throwing himself out of his seat, he reached to help pull Molly out of the car, and Rogue if there was time. "HURRY!!"
