Alcide didn't know what to say, because he wasn't sure how much she would believe him if he were to say that she hadn't been fucking up. Because, while he and Debbie had had their difficulties, it was still Debbie, and a part of him would always miss her. She had been his mate for so long, and even if things had gone to shit between them, their past was too difficult to forget. As odd as it was, though, despite that wedge of whatever was left of Debbie put between him and Sookie, he still didn't hate her. Not really, not in the way Sookie probably expected him to. He just had no idea how to phrase that.
"Everyone fucks up, Sookie," Alcide just said instead in a sigh. "Pretty damn bad, too. It doesn't mean you're going to keep doing it, and it doesn't mean you can't fix what got screwed up in the process."
While one arm was still around her, he wiped away some of her tears with his thumb. Her question was valid, and he found himself at a loss for words for a moment. "I don't know," he simply answered honestly, because she deserved the truth. She was too smart for anything else, anyway. "But hasn't Jason survived a whole hell of a lot by now, anyway? You Stackhouses are made tough, from what I can see. He'll probably show up here one day and just start flirtin' with all the girls around here."
It was partially a joke, but...well, at the same time it was basically the truth.
