Who: Lucy and Damon
What: Lucy has a dream and Damon sneaks his way into her subconscious
Where: a lighthouse along the coast of Washington
Warnings: unlikely

It had been a good raid. There had once been a survivalist living in a small house in Seattle. They hadn't been a very good survivalist though because her father had found their bomb shelter and raided it for food. Lucy who had been feeling hunger pains for a longer than she could remember was eager for the feast that was to come. The growl from inside of her had been almost overwhelming, echoing off the thin walls of the house they were currently staying in. Lucy liked this house, the walls were yellow and it reminded her of sunshine. The yellow reflected off of everything, including her parents giving them both an eerie jaundiced glow.

Suddenly Lucy's mother jumped up from her seat and gagged, grasping at her throat frantically. A rush of adrenaline flooded through her as she jumped up to her mother's side. "Mom?" she called out. "MOM?!" She shook her back and forth but her mother continued to gag and choke. Lucy blinked and her face changed shape, younger, more angular. Her birth mother.

"I poisoned her. Oops," her father said. She turned quickly to look at him, her rabbit heart jack-hammering away in her chest. His face was different too. Also younger, blonder, broader than lean. She wasn't looking at Scott McCall anymore. And it wasn't Allison McCall who was coughing over the table full of goodies.

"MOM!"

The room grew, stretching to an impossible length that made Lucy so very dizzy. "Mom? Dad?" She swallowed hard again, feeling like a desert had moved into her throat. They were so far away they probably couldn't hear her as she called to them. She wanted to run to them, to reach out but found her feet were frozen to the ground. She couldn't run or fight or move. She was strong, she had been born strong but suddenly she felt vulnerable and small as she watched them take her parents. They came with their guns and their fangs and just took them. Lucy would be with them if it wasn't for her feet. She was genetically faster than regular humans thanks to her father's DNA. Now that she was stuck it was as if she didn't even exist, like she had never existed at all.

She was suddenly plunged into darkness, only a small beam of light illuminating her body. She heard something breathing in the darkness. It was a labored type of breathing, like a creature in pain. Each ragged breath told the abbreviated tale of a day that would not be lived. It was a dark lump on the floor and Lucy approached it slowly and with the kind of respect a person might reserve for something holy.

The sun came up then and she was bathed in light as she put her hands over the dying deer, it's fur soft and hot on her palms. It was a buck she had shot with an arrow. The sorrow of erasing such a proud and graceful creature had bothered her even if she was grateful for the venison later. She felt it's life slip out from beneath her fingertips as she breathed out.

"You killed a deer." Damon quipped as he looked down at the young girl crouched over the blood mess of a dying deer. Her eyes jerked up to where he stood and she seemed shocked, afraid, calculating? He held his hands up in mock surrender and stood perfectly still. "You can frisk me if it'll make you feel better. I promise I'm a good guy."

Damon frowned down at the deer's body and suddenly something in the room shifted and the deer was gone. He was standing by the edge of his bed looking down at his own body. Everything had been still and quiet until two days ago when she arrived. He brought his eyes to her again and tipped his head curiously.

"Do I know you?" He asked carefully. That was always a dangerous question to ask but something about her was eerily familiar. "I'm sorry how rude of me, I'm Damon Salvatore. I'm normally not this forward, only really I am, but I guess I'm excited that I'm here talking to you. I've been sleeping for ten years."

He brought his eyes back to his own body and wished it had been Stefan or Elena here instead of this stranger. This stranger that he somehow managed to dream hijack. He wasn't quite sure how but he was confident enough to assume it had to do with him consuming the Dreamwalker to protect them. Stefan and Elena.

"No one's ever stayed longer than a few minutes in this lighthouse, you're the first." He finally removed his eyes from the bed and slowly walked away from it before moving to the fireplace which light up as he held his hands out to warm them. The flames were strangely green and blue and almost seemed to be dancing. "You can speak, right?"

"Yes," she said. She was suddenly struck by every inch of him as she stood up to her full height. He was still a head taller than her with a shock of black hair and eyes as blue as the sky. He seemed taller for a moment. She remembered Damon Salvatore from when she was a little girl still living at the prison. But she hadn't seen Damon Salvatore in a very long time. She had seen Stefan Salvatore from time to time but never Damon.

She glanced down at the body on the bed. It was also Damon Salvatore. "You don't remember me, do you?" she asked. Why would he remember her? She had only been a little girl then. Now she was eighteen years old, getting older by the minute. She could hear a clock ticking somewhere but she turned her eyes back to Damon. "I'm Lucy McCall." He clearly didn't remember her so she didn't see any harm in giving him her new name.

There was a fierce growling again, this time she couldn't tell if it was coming from her or from Damon but she didn't like the sounds of it. Somebody was really hungry, somebody had a beast inside of them. Lucy tried to remember the last time she ate but she couldn't.

"What are you doing here?" she asked as she looked at his prone form on the bed. She stood right up next to him and looked down at him. "What are you doing here?" she repeated.

He stared at her in confusion for several long minutes, ignoring how she kept asking over and over what he was doing here. Asking his body on the bed anyway, not so much him standing at the end of it. Lucy McCall. He searched his mind for something to click, something to grasp to figure out why she was familiar.

"I sucked down a nasty demon and wound up like Sleeping Beauty, are you my Princess Charming?" His tone was light and he batted his eyelashes at her. She just gave him a scowl. No sense of humor. "If you mean what am I doing in your dream? I'm guessing it's because you've been here for a couple of days. I kinda sorta might have a nasty dream demon locked up in here."

He gave his temple a tap and all of the sudden they were standing outside the lighthouse. They sky was so grey and overcast you could feel the gloom hanging in the air. There was a crunching of boots sound from behind them and they turned to see Elena and Stefan carrying my body toward the lighthouse. They both look somber, broken. The air twisted around them almost violently and they were dumped on the top of the lighthouse, the bright light nearly blinding them as it shone directly on them.

"Careful!" Damon barked as he reached out and grabbed Lucy's arm to steady her near the railing at the top. He felt disoriented himself from that twisting wild ass ride to the top, he could only imagine what she was feeling. That familiar tickle seemed to intensify when he looked at his hand on her arm. He let go of her quickly and glanced at his hand. A deep growl began rolling up the height of the lighthouse and it almost felt like it was rattling the old wrought iron catwalk they stood on.

"Whatever you've conjured up down there? You better have thought about us finding weapons to kill it somewhere, Lucy." He carefully slipped through the door into the lighthouse and glanced down to the very bottom and saw nothing, but he could certainly hear it.

He sucked a demon? She just arched her brows at him and gave him a look. She didn't understand what he meant about being in a dream. Especially since those who are dreaming usually do not know they are dreaming. But somehow this time Lucy knew, she just felt the surreality of the illusion she had created.

"I've got this covered," she said to him. A bow and arrow appeared in her capable hands as she raced to the side of the lighthouse and fired off a round. It wasn't until she had fired the arrow that she realized what she was actually shooting at. There was a horde of tigers all gathering at the bottom of the lighthouse, snarling and drooling as they pawed at the foundation with their razor sharp claws. It like looking out through a sea of orange.

"I don't have enough arrows," she said to him. Also, her hands felt especially slow like it would take a lifetime just to fire off one more arrow. "What do I have to do to wake up?" she asked him but he only gave her a puzzled look. Right. If he knew how to wake up he would probably be awake and not dreaming this strange dream with him.

The growl came again, from one of the two of them. Again she couldn't identify exactly which one of them it was coming from. "Are you hungry?" she asked him. "Here, eat this." She handed him a tin can, one of the bunch she had collected from that bunker in Seattle. She had no idea what was in it.

It was hard to gauge what you thought you were seeing versus what you were actually seeing. He watched her as her body moved like the air was suddenly made of jello but he was moving just fine. He was glancing at his arms and moving them in front of him when she was back on his time and tossing him a can of sardines.

"Thanks but I don't eat food." He tossed the can back to her and she looked at him. He felt the ache of his fangs wanting to burst to the surface and it had been so long since he'd had that feeling that it felt like near dying. This was a dream so why would he fang out? She wasn't real, nothing here was real. It was all a projection in her mind and nothing more.

"I don't know what we do to wake you up but we need to wake you up soon." He said in a strained voice as he struggled to keep himself in check. The only other time he could remember feeling this out of control was the night he was transitioning, that first kill. It had been a long, long time since that night. "Either that or I'm going to have to figure out a way to get me out of your dream."

He walked over toward the edge and saw all the tigers below and Lucy was pulling her bow like she were firing arrows but with no arrows. She was firing invisible arrows down into the tigers and it was exploding them like they were giant balloons filled with baby powder. He rubbed at his eyes to make sure he was actually seeing what was happening. He doubled over and clamped his hand over his mouth as the pain in his mouth became unbearable. A low growl rumbled up out of him.

"Stay over there!" He yelled as she started toward him. "Just give me a second and stay right where you are. I don't get this, this is a dream. You're blowing up tigers with no arrows one second and you're stuck in jello thick air the next. I shouldn't be - at least not like this."

She immediately drew her bow and pointed it at Damon. He was a vampire. That was one thing she knew above all else. Damon Salvatore was a vampire. So was Stefan and Elena and a few other people that Lucy knew but since childhood it had been drilled into her that vampires weren't to be trusted. A vampire had killed her birth mother. Her birth father had killed her birth mother. Vampires were very very bad.

"You stay where you are," she said to him. Suddenly she felt steadier, like reality snapped back into place like a rubber band. The world had been passing at maddening speeds, dizzying paces followed by slow motion. But now things had snapped back to real time and she was on high alert, muscles taut and tense. She was half transgenic which meant she was more than capable of taking on a vampire. Even an older one.

"I've been training for this my whole life," she informed him and unsure why. She hadn't been training to kill Damon, not specifically. But killing a certain vampire? Yes, she was prepared to do that. She didn't care that it was the vampire that created her. There was a certain poetry to it actually. He had created her and she would destroy him.

There was that growl again and Lucy tightened her grip on the bow. They were suddenly in the top of the watchtower, the room she had made for herself. There was a sleeping bag in the corner with a girl sleeping in it. Lucy realized it was herself sleeping there, twisting and turning in her sleeping bag.

"What the hell is going on?!" she demanded of Damon.

He was really starting to feel seriously disoriented with all this zig zag relocating going on. He stared down at the girl sleeping in the sleeping bag and he let his hand drop from his mouth. What was it about her that was so damned familiar that it kept being drawn to his attention? Up until now she was just someone who was unfortunate enough to camp out where he was all holed up.

"Why are you asking me what's going on?" He barked back at her when she demanded to know what was going on. He just tapped in to her dream so there was no way he was controlling any of this. It was impossible wasn't it? To control somebody's dream? Wasn't that exactly what had happened to Stefan and Elena though? What trapped them and made Damon save them both?

"This isn't my dream, this is yours in case you forgot. I'm just hitching a ride... somehow." He glanced around and the growling was suddenly coming from above them and both of their eyes tore to the ceiling. "We need to get downstairs, c'mon!" He took off in a run down the metal stairs and he knew she wasn't far behind him when she heard her boots slamming the same steps he just had.

He stopped at the door and was almost afraid. He'd been here safely for ten years sleeping his tormented sleep and now he was about to tear the door open and leave his prison. He didn't have much time to process that when Lucy shoved past him and swung the door open. Cold night air drifted in on both of them, a low fog was gathered all around the ground.

"This can't be." He said in a hushed tone as his eyes gazed out into the apple orchard. There was no apple orchard here but there had been one the night he'd found the Dreamwalker. He'd killed that thing in the very orchard Lucy was now rushing out into. He quickly caught up to her and gripped her arm tightly as he pulled her to a stop. "Look you really can't be here so you need to wake up!"

"Okay, wake me up then!" she shouted at him over the thunder clouds that suddenly rolled in over head. A giant clap of thunder followed by a flash of lightning lit up the night sky. "Wake me up, Damon Salvatore." She even pinched her arm like that would do anything. If Lucy was sleeping then she wouldn't rise until she was ready to. Even if she was having an awful nightmare. Truly, she'd had worse.

"My mother saw this. I know what I have to do. You're going to have to trust me." Funny she should talk of trust when just a few minutes ago she didn't trust him. But she had only known he was a vampire. She didn't know about the apple orchard, not until this moment. And the thunderstorm. It all made sense now. Lightning flashed through the sky again, casting a ghostly shadow on half of Damon's face.

"Are you strong enough to fight?" she asked him. He did look like he had been sleeping for a long time. She wasn't looking at him now though, she was watching the gigantic King Kong sized shadow moving towards them through the apple orchard. The bow and arrow were discarded in exchange for a katana sword strapped to her back. Lucy pulled it free and held it defensively as the shadow swept towards them.

The storm was worse, terrible inside of the shadow. Lucy could barely herself think over the wind and the rain and the thunder. Next to one of the trees stood a woman with red hair and a wicked little smirk.

"This is my world, little girl. You don't make the rules here," she said.

Lucy felt her sword move and she turned horrified eyes down on the snake she was now holding. She dropped it as if it were on fire.

Her mother saw this? He'd have to trust her? He shot her a look when she asked if he was strong enough to fight. This was a dream, he could do whatever he wanted right? Both of their eyes were locked on the same thing, the Dream Walker. Her face was burned into his brain because it was the last thing he saw before he fell into his deep slumber.

"Nothing she says will be real." Damon leaned in and whispered in Lucy's ear as he kept his gaze locked on the red head. Damon bent and picked up Lucy's sword and placed it back in her hand, gripped the handle just slightly before she took it. There was a design on the hilt that looked very familiar and she shook his hand off with a glare. His mouth opened slightly as he finally realized who this girl was.

"Lucy." He said as he stepped around in front of her, ignoring the Dream Walker just twenty feet behind him. It all made sense, how easily he tapped into her dreams, he knew her. Faith's little girl all grown up. There was a massive clap of thunder and Damon refocused himself and prepared himself to fight.

"I trust you. You lead, I'll follow." He said seriously as the Dream Walker began to flicker in and out of vision, reappearing in intervals each time she was closer and closer. He couldn't help the feeling of fear pricking at the back of his mind as they both watched her intently. Lucy took off in a sudden dash to the left of the Dream Walker and Damon followed obediently behind her. A small shed came into view and he realized they were running toward it.

"Where are we going!?" He yelled over the wind, rain and thunder. He grabbed her arm and jerked her back just as a bolt of lightening hit the ground a few feet from them. They flew backward through the air and a tree stopped Damon and blocked Lucy from slamming into it herself. Damon let out a groan as they hit the ground and he laid there painfully. "Ouch."

She flipped back up to her feet quickly. Being part transgenic had its perks, even in the dream world. The lightning lit up the sky again and flashed another shadow across Damon's face. "It's you," Lucy said, the pieces snapping back together again. "She's you now." Why hadn't she realized it before? It hadn't been Damon being a vampire that had set her on edge. No, she had grown up around vampires. But the dreamwalker was becoming part of Damon.

His eyes flashed in the dark and this time there was no lightning. Lucy didn't hesitate, the minute Damon got to his feet she rushed him with the katana. The sharp blade sliced cleanly through his midsection. His eyes widened as he looked at her not expecting the turn of events.

"Sometimes sacrifices have to be made," she explained to him as his hands flailed to the wound. His face vanished for a brief second, flickering to the redhead's face and then back to Damon's again. This time his face was filled with genuine anguish. The part of him that was still actually Damon.

A terrible wind began to howl and Lucy hunched down in her shirt, as rain and dirt kicked up against her. "I'm sorry!" she shouted at Damon. A tornado was coming and she burst into a run, heading towards the shed.

Damon stared down at the blade in his gut before Lucy jerked it out and said something about sacrifices. He hit his knees as she apologized and ran off toward the shed as the winds began whipping wildly around him. He glanced over his shoulder and grimaced as he saw the approaching tornado. He let out a growl as he thrust himself to his feet and began to zip about disorientated toward the shed.

"Lucy!" He yelled as he pounded on the shed door. She blocked it with something or it had a heavy lock on the inside. She wasn't answering him and the winds were starting to tug at him and he felt anger boil up inside him and his fist went through the wood and grabbed hold of the board locking the door and let it drop before he kicked the door open with his boot.

"I'm not going to- to hurt you." He winced and fell slightly to the right against the wall. Lucy was heading toward him and he felt unprepared but at the last second she picked up the two by four and locked the door before she turned and looked at him. She still had her katana in her hand and he held one hand up in surrender. What she had said about the Dream Walker, she wasn't wrong.

"Something's happening." He gasped and put his hand to his chest. When he pulled his hand back it was like a giant sliver of light was pouring from his chest and his face was ashen. What was happening? He felt like he were dying or being torn in two. Damon fell to his knees and dropped forward on to his hands as he let out a strangled sound.

When he lifted his head it was like they were stuck in an old movie of their lives, their memories, flashing around so fast and so briefly that they only got a taste. Damon sat back on his heels and stared up at the wall with a blank stare as the boards of the shed began to rattle and threaten to disappear into the tornado over them. Then? Everything was black and quiet, he watched Lucy struggle in the darkness as he pulled his hand from his chest and the room filled the blinding white light.

Lucy woke up with a start. Breathing hard, she shot straight up in her sleeping bag. Sweat dripped off of her and she wiped it away absently with the back of her sleeve. That had been one hell of a nightmare. She hadn't had one that vivid since she was eight years old. This was the kind that gave you a cold sweat and made your body race with adrenaline in what was supposed to be a restful state.

It was still dark out but on the verge of being daylight. She crawled out of her sleeping bag and groped in the dark for her canteen. When she found it, she drank from it greedily. She would have to find some more water soon. She knew she couldn't stay in the lighthouse forever but it was the safest place for her in the meantime. There was nobody out on the shore. Occasionally zombies washed up on shore but besides that it was quiet. It was too far removed from Everett to make it a vampire hunting ground too.

A thump below her made her startled and jump. She looked around in the dark silently but then another thump followed. And then another and another. Her hands automatically went for her bow and arrow. She turned her flashlight on and carefully crept down the stairs of the lighthouse. She realized the banging was coming from the basement.

She held her breath as she slowly approached the door where the banging noise had come from. She opened it quickly and immediately aimed an arrow at the approaching figure.

Finally the brightness started to dim and Damon managed to open his eyes and look around. He wasn't in the shed any longer. He was laying on the bed in the bottom of the lighthouse instead of staring down at his own body like he had earlier. He sat with a start and his first thought was that he had to find Lucy and wake her up.

He struggled to get to the door and started pounding on it when he realized it was locked from the outside. He was so weak he felt dizzy but he was relieved his chest wasn't a giant glow worm. He stepped back when he heard the doorknob turn and he froze as he was staring at the tip of an arrow aimed at his head.

"Whoa let's not do anything rash." He said just barely above a whisper as Lucy kept her stance. If he could find a way to wake her up then she could get out of the lighthouse and the Dream Walker would still be trapped with him. His hand went to his chest and he realized something felt ... different. Nothing was fuzzy around the edges and everything felt normal.

"Wait - hold on, are you ... awake?" He looked at her with a wild expression across his face. There was no way that this couldn't be a dream, right? Ten years he'd been unconscious because of the Dream Walker, nobody could find a way to wake him. "This is still a dream, right?"

"I don't think so," Lucy said slowly feeling a little self conscious. Was this still a dream? It wouldn't be the first time she was having a dream within a dream. This one was so vivid though. But hadn't that been her complaint about the last dream? Somehow she definitely knew that she wasn't dreaming. Her thinking was no longer in the abstract, like letters written on a wall just out of your line of sight so all you had to go on was your periphery.

She lowered her bow and arrow now that she saw that it was Damon Salvatore. What the hell had just happened? She pushed past Damon and saw a bed in the basement with a chair sitting next to it.

"I thought you were dead," she said. That was what Elena and Stefan had told everyone after all. Damon died, some dreamwalker killed him a long time. Lucy had been a little girl the last time she had seen him. It hadn't been long before the prison had fallen and her father had tried to steal her from the only parents she'd ever had. Obviously Damon wasn't dead. Maybe it was just a lie they had told a scared little girl and hadn't bothered to ever correct the lie when she grew up.

She backed away from the basement and headed back up the stairs and into the top of the lighthouse. She looked up when Damon walked into the room which was only now starting to see the first rays of early morning dawn stream in through the window. She was packing her stuff up.

"I wasn't really planning to go back there but I can take you to your brother if you want," she said coldly.

Damon stood there for a few minutes flexing and releasing his fists just for the feel of it. He was awake. Really, seriously awake. He glanced up the stairs where Lucy had disappeared and he slowly made his way up them noticing how often he had to stop and rest. He was weak and he hadn't had any form of a regular diet in a very long time.

He leaned against the door frame of her sleeping space and his face tightened when she offered to take him back to his brother. Stefan. Elena. He swore he nearly felt his heart skip a beat as he closed his eyes to stop the room from spinning. He slowly lowered himself to the floor and leaned heavily against the wall behind him.

"That would be really great of you." He said quietly as he tried focusing on anything but the sound of her heart beating in his ears. This was a situation that could go badly and he forced himself back to his feet. He was going to have to pull a Stefan and find an animal to snack on until something better came along.

"I need to go outside." He mumbled as he stumbled back toward the stairs. He clumsily took them two at a time and had to catch himself several times before he stopped on a landing for a rest. He glanced over the railing and it looked like it was a never ending set of spiraling stairs and his vision spun. He gripped the railing with both hands and kept his eyes closed and finally fell out onto the grass outside.

It was fine that he needed to go outside. It would take her a few minutes to get her stuff together anyway. She hadn't really planned on going back to the rebel camp near Seattle. It was at least half a day's hike in the opposite direction. She wanted to go to Everett, she had a mission there but she supposed Damon had ruined at least a half day of it. She still hadn't figured out how.

With her pack and her bow slung over her back she finally walked down to the bottom of the lighthouse and let herself out through the door. Damon was nowhere in sight. Since Damon was off obviously getting his breakfast (did he really think she was naive to not realize what he was up to?), Lucy decided to do the same.

She set her pack and her bow down on the beach and walked to the water to find some fish for breakfast. She had already set some traps the night before and she came back with a pretty big fish that she roasted over a fire, waiting for Damon to return from his field trip.

While she was alone she had a moment to contemplate what had happened. Obviously she had somehow psychically linked up with Damon to wake him up or bring him back to life. One of the two. She wasn't sure how just that it had been her destiny. Her mother had seen it in a dream which meant she had seen it. She just didn't understand what the significance was yet.

Damon wandered back feeling only slightly better and far more disgusted than he cared to admit. Animal blood was nothing like human blood but he would make due, he wouldn't risk harming Lucy. He stood at the edge of the forest and watched her sitting by the fire, she looked deep in thought. Her thoughts were probably mirroring his own in wondering how this was even possible.

"Penny for your thoughts." He said as he approached and she pulled her fish from the flame. It smelled terrible but she made fast work of pulling the skin off to get to the meat. He sat and warmed his hands while she devoured the fish like she hadn't eaten in days. He doubted that very much considering who raised her.

"How is this even possible?" He finally asked after a long silence. She was kicking dirt over the flames when he asked and she just gave him a look for a second. "I've been here for a long time and Stefan could never find a way to fix me. I've watched them for a while after I first slept, then everything was just dark. Until you."

Everything about right now felt so surreal to Damon. He couldn't quite wrap his brain around the fact he was awake and being taken to see his brother. He wondered if this was all some kind of cruel joke and he would be standing over his sleeping body the next time he closed his eyes to enjoy the feel of the sun on his face.

Lucy didn't give Damon her thoughts. She always thought her thoughts were worth more than a penny so that expression really didn't make any sense. Besides, she had basically just met the guy. Even if they had known each other when she was very small. She remembered him a little but not much. Luckily, he changed the subject and she could mostly focus on her breakfast.

"I don't know," she said. "But it was supposed to happen this way. I can tell you that much. My mother sees things sometimes and she saw you, she saw that dream. I was supposed to come here. I guess to wake you up."

Once she was satisfied that the fire was out, she hefted her backpack onto her shoulders and grabbed her bow. "We had better get going. It's about a half day's hike to the rebel camp where Stefan lives and I have other places to be."

With that she marched straight into the woods. She wasn't going to wait around on him. He would follow or stay on the beach and figure it out himself.

Her mother sees things? Allison. It was like everything was coming rushing back to him all at once, everything he felt like he had forgotten while slumbering. It felt as if his mind were racing and he still hadn't fully grasped that he was being lead back to his brother and Elena. Elena. He didn't mind her obvious anger in having to back track though, he kept up with her as best he could.

"So... you said your mother saw this, knew this was going to happen?" He asked curiously after about an hour of hiking in silence. She gave him a glare and he was so happy to see it despite everything, she looked a lot like Faith. "Did she tell you to come to the lighthouse? Or did you just stumble on it? I mean either way I'm glad you did, what year is it?"

He watched her as she stopped and took a drink from her canteen and in the distance a twig snapped and he'd never seen anyone arm themselves so fast before. He kind of marveled at it for a moment before turning and seeing a deer come into the clearing. His stomach made a terrible growling sound and he realized he was going to be starving again by the time they got to where Stefan and Elena were.

"What other place do you have to be?"

"It's 2037," she answered him. She didn't bother to turn and look at him either, just kept hiking through the woods at a moderate pace. She wanted to set a faster one but she knew he might have a hard time keeping up after being asleep for a decade. The shock alone had to weigh pretty heavily on him. Lucy had only been a little girl last she had seen Damon.

"I have to save my parents," she said. "They were taken by some vampires to one of the human camps in Everett. I need to get them back." It wasn't Lucy's only mission but it happened to be her number one mission at the moment. Allison and Scott McCall might not be her biological parents but they had cared for her and kept her safe for eighteen years. She wasn't just going to throw them to the wolves now.

Her real mission was to kill her father. Once Alec was dead then maybe she wouldn't have to worry about the vampires that worked for him targeting her parents. And just maybe once she killed him all the bad in her would die too, snuffed out and erased like a bad dream. Lucy couldn't remember her mother and there weren't any pictures of her. But her father's face was etched into her memory perfectly. It helped that he never aged.

Damon slowed slightly when Lucy announced it was 2037. 2037? He really had slept for ten god damn years. His head was already spinning when she mentioned human camps? He just stopped where he was and felt himself tremble almost, what had happened while he slept? Were Stefan and Elena safe? He knew his brother would take care of Elena at all costs because neither of them could ever lose her. Ever.

"I'm... sorry but did you say human camps?" He caught up to her and saw her face set in a familiar stubborn kind of way. That was all Allison right there and a little bit of Faith mixed in it. It seemed they raised her right and she was strong. She was walking like a woman with a drive and Damon had a feeling it wasn't just about the McCall's.

"I've been asleep for ten years and I could back to Faith's daughter and human camps." He put his fingers to his temples and rubbed at them as they walked. He finally dropped his hands and let his head fall to the side to look at her with a smirk.

"Maybe I should have stayed asleep?" He saw the faintest of smirks on her lips and he glanced away with a smile. What are the chances of all this? And what the hell did Allison see that caused all of it to happen? He was beyond confused so he just gave up and instead focused on the fact that he was going to see Elena. There wasn't a single day he didn't think about her and hoped with all his heart she was safe.

"So where exactly are you taking me? And how far is it because I'm gonna be honest, I feel like I'm about to drop. Maybe even die, I dunno, but either way it's not good." He grimaced slightly as he stopped and put his hand against a nearby tree and bent over slightly. He guessed someone had to have been feeding him, keeping him alive, and he knew it was Stefan and Elena.

She was mostly ignoring him until she said her mother's name. Her real mother's name, not Allison although Lucy considered Allison her mother. It was the one she had never met and only heard stories about. She didn't even have the luxury of a picture. She had the mirror and that was it. She stopped short at that and wheeled around to face him.

She tilted her head at him curiously when she saw him and the way he stood leaning against the tree. He didn't look so great. "I'm taking you to see your brother. He's in one of the rebel camps. There's probably other people you remember? Elena and Jeremy Gilbert? They live there too." She saw the change in his face when she mentioned The Gilberts but didn't make the appropriate connections yet.

"We should get going. It's a long hike to camp and then I basically have to come all the way back to save my parents." She said that last little defensively. She had no idea how Damon had figured out who she was. Not that it was a great big deal that he had it was just that if she couldn't fool him then who could she fool? She wasn't going to get her parents free this way. Especially when she knew that taking them was a trap. She just wasn't sure if the trap was for her or for Stefan and Elena.

She sighed when she realized that he wasn't moving. He must have been in shock from waking up from a coma after a decade. Lucy couldn't even imagine what that was like. And she felt sympathy for him and everything but she had parents to get to rescuing and he was holding her up.

"Are you going to be okay?" she asked as she took a tentative step towards him.

He knew she was pissed that she had to basically double back but she was the one who offered. He didn't know what he would do if she just took off and left him at this point. He would have to wait until something came his way that he could eat and not the other way around. He held his hand out as she took a step toward him asking if he was going to be okay.

"It's better if you don't get too close to me right now. I'm hungry and I don't want to hurt you. No, no I won't hurt you but it makes it more difficult if you're closer." He forced himself to stand upright and he gave her a soft smile. He wouldn't hurt her. There was no way in the world he would. Faith and him may have butted heads every single day but they were friends. Damon respected her.

"I'll be alright but I'm going to have to go find bambi that we just saw, sorry. Give me five minutes and then I won't hinder your plans any further." He gave a slight gallant bow before he zipped off and found the deer easily. He didn't stop until the deer was dead, there was no point in holding back because Lucy had places to go and Damon couldn't wait to see Elena.

"Okay, all better." He said in a sassy little tone as he suddenly appeared at Lucy's side and she jumped about a mile high. He was starting to feel a little more like his old self and he fell into step as Lucy started stomping away. The further they went he felt his energy draining from his body. Ten years of sleeping really took a toll on a poor vampire.

"So your parents, you mean Allison and Scott? Where's this camp they're stuck in and how'd they get caught? Also please tell me that Klaus and Rebekah are not behind these camps." Damon was pretty sure she was going to tell him that they were indeed and life was just like he left it, with psycho Originals trying to kill them or take over the world.

She was surprised that he needed to feed again so soon and a little taken aback by it. Lucy knew she could hold her own but the older a vampire was, the harder it could be to defeat. Of course, Damon was weakened from a ten year coma so there was that. She was contemplating strategies of beheading him when he popped back up.

"Do you want me to lie to you then?" she asked, turning her head to look at him for a second. She wished she could say that Rebekah and Klaus were long dead but nope, they weren't. And Lucy hated Rebekah, hated her with a fiery fucking passion to rival none. Rebekah was the one who had turned her father into a monster just months before she was born. Although most stories painted her father out to be a monster long before he was turned into a vampire. But if that was true then what had Faith ever seen in him?

"And I mean my parents. I need to find them. They would come looking for me." Had come looking for her back when the prison had fallen and her father had taken her for a little while. "I'll get you back to camp and Stefan can take care of you. But then I have to go, sorry."

He would have to be someone else's problem then. She wasn't exactly at ease around him either with his declaration of being so hungry. She was ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

God damn Rebekah and Klaus all the way to hell and back, how were they still around? Damon's head was throbbing as they walked along with all the shit he shouldn't even be thinking of right now. He should just be thinking about getting back to Elena and his brother. This was the day he'd been looking forward to only without the long hike and feeling like death part. He was about to be reunited with the people he loved the most.

"Now I know I just met you and all but don't you think you should have some backup with you?" He asked curiously as he looked her over. She was armed to the teeth and he tipped his head curiously in wonderment of how she got that weapon to stay - he stopped his thought process and grabbed her arm.

"Someone's nearby. I can smell them." He wasn't sure what people were like anymore but if they were being hunted and stuck in camps? They probably weren't very friendly. She shook his arm off and continued forward quietly, scanning the trees slowly and seriously.

Damon found himself staying protectively close to her even though he wasn't at the top of his game right now. If something happened and they were attacked he was confident he could injure whoever it was enough for them to continue on their way but he wasn't... totally sure that's what would happen. This was no dream and his strength was not endless right now.

She had been about to tell him that she could handle things on her own. She didn't need backup and wouldn't accept it. It was too dangerous. This was a trap and she knew it. She also knew she had better chances of escaping than Elena and Stefan did, since they would always sacrifice for one another. But she stopped when Damon said he smelled someone.

Pulling the bow from behind her she pulled an arrow taut as she slowly approached the trees. She could feel Damon tense up beside her as they both heard something shaking in the trees. She held her breath as the culprit finally emerged. Just a walker shambling out from the wooded area, hungrily reaching for dinner.

Lucy let an arrow fly and hit the zombie square between the eyes. "Just a zombie," she said to Damon. But she had spoken too soon because a person an honest to God person came out after with his hands up.

"You're not going to shoot me, are you?" he asked.

"I don't know. Are you dangerous?" Lucy asked.

"Depends. Are you a firewall?" The guy laughed nervously. "Never mind. Nerd joke. Thanks for killing that zombie. He was following me."

Damon looked over this kid nervously. What the hell was he doing out here in the middle of nowhere? He didn't like it and he kept his eyes on him as he talked to Lucy. He didn't look dirty enough to be some random dude just out walking with a zombie following him.

"You should load another arrow, Lucy." Damon finally spoke and he kept his eyes locked on the guy. He was either going to be right here or he would look like he had a serious case of stranger danger going on. He was hoping he was right as Lucy looked at him oddly before drawing back another arrow.

"Point it at him." Damon said flatly and the little nerd boy balked and held up his hands in protest. "Look at his clothes, does he look filthy enough to be out here wandering around? It's been ten years, I'm a little rusty."

"I-I swear I was just out here looking for some wood to make a fire. It's been getting cold at night." He stammered as Damon took a step closer and walked around him as the guy followed him closely with his eyes. "That zombie was following me and I didn't bring a weapon. Serious."

Damon reached down and jerked up the leg of the kid's pants and pulled a large hunting knife from his boot. He stood up and looked the knife over as he stood beside Lucy.

"Thought you didn't have a weapon?" Damon asked him curiously as Lucy's grip on her bow increased and her aim was for the head. He crossed his arms over his chest and just stared the guy down. He could tell he was afraid, he could smell it on him actually. "What're we gonna do here, Lucy?"

Lucy rolled her eyes. "Give him his knife back," she said seriously. Everyone was armed these days. There was no such things as having no weapons. Not unless you had a death wish. She released her taut grip on the bow but kept the arrow in place just in case. "You're one of them aren't you?" she asked him.

He just stared back at her for a moment. "He's one of them," she said to Damon. "One of the freedom fighters? They're practically extinct now you know."

"We don't even exist anymore," he reminded her. Which was true. The freedom fighters had all been killed or turned or forced into the farms by Klaus and Rebekah and their vampire lackeys. The ones who survived did so by staying sharp and staying smart. Sometimes Lucy thought they were humanity's last hope. In the northwest anyway. Then again, Connecticut seemed like it might as well be another planet not just across the country.

"You better hurry back to your people," she said to him before starting on the path back again with Damon at her side. She didn't even have to look at him to see the burning question in his eyes.

"Klaus and Rebekah killed most of the freedom fighters. The network hasn't worked in years. Things have changed a lot since you've been.... asleep."

Damon watched the guy stalk off before turning his attention to Lucy and falling in step beside her. His mind started reeling again despite his attempts to focus on where they were going. He couldn't help it. It was like a train wreck that didn't feel like it was going to stop any time soon.

"Eliminate communication. Smart move I guess, I mean if you're evil and everything. I'm sure shit broke down pretty fast after that?" He asked but already knew the answer. Leave it to Klaus and Rebekah to take over a world that had gone to hell in a handbag. Did that make it a victory or a loss? He wasn't sure. They walked along silently for a long time with him stuck in his thoughts and it felt strangely refreshing.

"Is that campfire smoke up ahead?" He stopped and stared cautiously at the smoke rising in the distance. Lucy just kept on trekking toward it and he figured they were getting close. He was getting nervous and anxious and about twenty other emotions all at once. Ten years. Doesn't seem like much when you're a vampire but this felt like it had been a hundred years.

"Are there any others from the prison at this camp? Anyone I'd remember? Serena?" Damon hadn't thought about Serena in a long time but he hoped she'd managed to make it through all of this somehow. Maybe Nate pulled her through. Maybe Stefan and Elena were still taking care of her.

"I haven't seen Serena since I was small," Lucy said. She barely remembered the blonde but she only had vague memories of her from childhood. She wasn't sure what had happened to her and had never bothered to find out. She just assumed Serena had fallen when the prison had like most of the people inside of the prison at the time.

They came upon a clearing and Lucy stopped at the small campfire there. There was smoke curling into the air but it had been from a recent campfire. Somebody had put it out within the last fifteen minutes or so, maybe the freedom fighter. Lucy wasn't sure.

"Come on, we still have a lot of daylight to burn," she said to Damon and started ahead again.

They hiked for another two hours in silence before she had to stop and take a break to drink some water from her canteen. She watched Damon leaning lazily against a tree nearby as she drank. Her eyes clung to him for a moment as she studied him. He looked different to her now. Her memory played tricks on her. He caught her staring and she quickly looked away.

"So you knew my mother?" she asked tentatively after they started walking again.

Damon smirked a little tiny bit when he caught her checking him out. He may have been asleep for ten years but he wouldn't forget what a woman checking him out looked like. Although it was kinda weird that Faith's daughter was the one checking him out. She was all grown up right?

"Faith? Yeah, I did." He said softly. Faith and him hadn't always got along but they had each others backs when it counted and that was something. Trusting people in this world was a difficult thing but he'd learned to trust her and she had learned to trust him as well.

"She was a really great woman. Stubborn as hell but she lead everyone at the prison. Could hold her own in a fight too I might add, she cleaned my clock a couple times." He cracked a smile in memory of that. She was a slayer and she came with a pow when she wanted to. He would push her just a little too far every now and then and POW he'd get a piece of that violence.

"You were real little but she loved you something fierce, Lucy." He glanced ahead at their terrain and grimaced slightly. They'd come a long way already and she did say it was a ways back and she was really unhappy about coming all this way. He understood why now really.

Lucy listened and even smiled a bit until Damon got to the part about how much her mother loved her. They had barely known each other, Lucy and her mother. Literally Faith had been killed only a couple of months after Lucy had been born. They never had a chance to bond like the others did. Lucy wondered if that was what was wrong with her sometimes. How detached she could be.

"Then you know who my father is," she said coldly. They had taken Alec too lightly and it had been the prison's downfall. Faith didn't think Alec was a threat because she still loved him and then he killed her. Her parents love for each other had proven to be everyone's undoing. So maybe that was what was wrong with her.

Alec was still getting away with murder, literally and she planned to stop it. She planned to set right what her mother couldn't. Faith had been weak when it had come right down to it but her daughter was strong. Lucy was ready to take care of her father once and for all so that he couldn't hurt anyone else. Like The McCalls.

She turned and gave Damon a hard look. "I'm going to find him and I'm going to kill him."

She didn't know why she was sharing her plans with him. It wasn't the first time she had told someone what she was up to but everyone had just tried to talk her out of it. That was when she knew she was truly in this alone. Everyone else was too afraid to go up against Alec. Lucy wasn't.

Damon studied her seriously for a moment after her declaration. And boy was it a declaration. She wanted to go after Alec, who was probably still Rebekah's favorite toy, and kill him. He admired her spirit and realized she had Faith's kick ass mentality. He could tell she was waiting to see what he thought about that.

"I think that's long overdue if you ask me." He finally said and she gave him a slightly incredulous look before wiping it from her face. More like her mother than she knew. "He's strong though. I'm guessing you have some master plan of attack? He's a formidable opponent, not that I doubt you could take him."

She took another drink from her canteen and started hiking away from him again. He of course followed after her and let the silence lapse for a while. He probably angered her or something but he couldn't really tell. He wasn't on the top of his game at the moment.

"I'm sure you could convince Stefan, Elena and myself to help you out." He finally said and she glanced back at him. "It's always good to have backup to distract skanks like let's say Rebekah. Let's not forget about Klaus. We could be like the ninja distraction and you can take out dear old dad."

She didn't actually have any kind of plan. First, she was going to find The McCalls and break them out of the whichever farm they had been dragged to. After she set them free she planned to continue deeper into Everett where she would hunt, stalk and kill her father. Then she didn't really care what happened to her.

Stefan and Elena had already told her that her plan was insane. Of course, they had also offered to help her with it but she had ultimately left without them. Maybe Damon was some big red flag that she did need help but she was choosing to ignore it for now. Stefan and Elena were nice and they were happy. She didn't need to get them killed.

"Stefan and Elena don't need those kinds of problems," she said to him. If he wanted to help her she wouldn't object but she didn't want to bother Stefan and Elena. They were basically keeping everyone at camp safe too. Which was a big responsibility.

"And I don't care what happens to Rebekah and Klaus." It was a lie. She hated Rebekah nearly as much as she hated her father. But she wasn't driven to kill Rebekah like she was to kill Alec. She was sure she was walking right into a trap too. Her father had to know where The McCalls were and was just lying in wait for her. She didn't know why.

Well at least she seemed to like Elena and his brother, that was good. She didn't tell him he couldn't help but she didn't tell him he could either which he found interesting. He snorted slightly when she said she didn't care about Rebekah or Klaus. Rebekah had turned her father into what he was, she was kind of a catalyst.

"I'd be happy to deal with Rebekah, just sayin'." He said with a whole lot of snark in his voice. He would love to shove a dagger in that bitch's chest and stick her in a well, maybe fill it with rocks. Yeah. Lots of heavy rocks because no one would be going back to get her. "Klaus is a different story, I dunno what can be done with him."

If Alec had kidnapped Allison and Scott he surely hoped Lucy realized she was walking into a big fat trap. He felt she was bright enough to realize that and she just didn't care. She wanted to end the man that killed her mother and took her family. Damon couldn't blame her one bit.

"How much further is it?" He asked again cautiously. He had started to sound like a kid in the backseat of a car. Are we there yet? He was tired though and he wanted to rest and feed and see Elena.

"Another couple hours, maybe more. Not getting tired, are you?" she asked. She knew he wasn't, he was a vampire. Sometimes she admired their stamina but Lucy was plenty strong and fast all on her own. And it was the very man she hated who had managed to give her amazing genes.

She shut her mouth and they mostly stayed silent for the rest of the walk. There were a couple of zombies they had run into along the way but between her bow and arrow and Damon's speed and strength, it hadn't taken them long to kill the zombies.

Hours later they emerged from the trees into the rebel camp. The rebel camp was made up of a housing community which had a fence surrounding the houses. The fence was also guarded but they immediately let her and Damon through. Lucy had basically grown up in this camp.

"This is where Stefan and Elena live," she said. The McCalls lived here too but Lucy didn't consider this place her home any more than she considered the prison her home. Anything could be taken away from you in the blink of an eye. It was better to keep your expectations low, she thought.

She walked through the winding houses until they came up to Stefan and Elena's apartment. Walking towards the door, Lucy could see the two of them through the window. Elena was curled up on Stefan's lap and they were talking quietly.

She raised her fist to knock on the door.

Damon grabbed her wrist and shook his head as he studied Elena and Stefan through the window. Their body language. The way she was looking at him. It hit him like a freight train all at once and he staggered back slightly before turning away from the window and walking away.

He strolled through this place, this sealed off little part of town that seemed perfect. Guards on the walls, in towers, on the streets. It was like a little piece of the old world was still here and he smiled bitterly. It had been ten years and he was stupid to think she'd wait for him.

"So we should go and kill your dad." Damon said when he knew Lucy was standing silently behind him. He turned and looked at her and he could feel himself become shut down. He was on his way to flipping off his capacity to care about what he just saw.

"You don't mind me tagging along, right?" He asked as he began walking back the way they had come in, back toward the gates out. He stopped at the gates and the men looked at Lucy curiously before she nodded her head and they swung them open. Damon strolled out and started heading back the way they'd come.

It didn't take a genius to put all of the pieces together which was exactly what Lucy was doing when she watched Damon stagger away from the window and wander off. How had she not known about him and Elena? Two brothers, one girl. That was scandalous but really not the first thing on Lucy's mind. Although she did feel bad for Damon.

"After I just backtracked bringing you back here?" she asked him, folding her arms over her chest. It wasn't really his fault that his girlfriend was with his brother now. Lucy had been in love once and the once was enough to know better. It wasn't a mistake she was ever making to look again.

She was quiet for a long few minutes as she watched him. He was clearly pained, it was plain as day on his face.

"You don't even want to tell them you're back?" she asked. The more she thought about it, the faster she was warming up to the idea of having a vampire sidekick. So long as he didn't get any ideas about putting those fangs into her, he could be useful. And who cared if he had a death wish? He was dead already. He had been dead for the past decade. Clearly everyone had already moved on without him.

"Nope, sure don't." He said as he looked her over. She had her arms locked over her chest and she looked stubborn but he really didn't care. He wanted as far away from this place as humanly possible as quickly as possible. "If you want me to grab a snack I'm sure I can get us back to the lighthouse in a flash. You'd have to let me put you over my shoulder though and you don't look too friendly."

He turned and just started walking on the trail they'd followed through the trees. He really didn't care if she followed. He would go after Rebekah himself just to have something to do other than think about what he'd just seen. It didn't help it was burnt into his retinas.

"We're going to have to acquire weapons." He said over his shoulder to Lucy who was a little ways behind him. Weapons were going to be a necessity if he had a chance in distracting Rebekah and Klaus. His appearance alone should be enough considering he's been MIA for ten years.

Every heart beat he heard in the woods was calling to him and he would zip ahead and eat them. All of them. As many as he could. He wasn't happy it was animal blood but when he came across a human he'd compel them and drink. He fell in step behind Lucy quietly and seethed loudly in his brain.

"I have weapons. And aren't you supposed to be a weapon?" she asked him. She knew that Stefan and Elena had extraordinary powers and the way they carried on, Damon had always been the strong one. Lucy was actually a bit curious as to what exactly Damon had in him. She was half transgenic and had studied hand to hand combat since she was old enough to walk. She thought she could take him.

She didn't look like much but she had plenty of weapons on her. At least a half dozen different kinds of hunting knives, a bow with plenty of arrows, two pistols and five stakes.

She also didn't like the sound of being tossed over his shoulder for the half day trip back to the lighthouse. Even if it might get her back part of this wasted day. Lucy was starting to think that maybe this had happened for a reason. She wasn't supposed to do this alone. Damon was supposed to go with her. That's why she had gone to the lighthouse in the first place.

She thought about that for a few minutes and then looked up at Damon. "You know, as strange as it sounds, I think you were actually supposed to do this with me. I think I was at that lighthouse for a reason." There were plenty of other places she could have bunked down for the night but she had chosen that lighthouse out in the middle of nowhere.

Damon couldn't discount the strangeness of everything since he'd met Lucy. Well, highjacked her dream. So many people had come and gone through that lighthouse and he had never been able to do what he had done. Maybe there was something to it all but he didn't know what.

"Makes sense I suppose." He replied to her as they walked and he glanced over at her as she studied him. Asleep for ten years, woken up by Faith's kid, and now he was off to kill Alec. He wondered if Faith had anything to do with this but it had been a long time since he'd seen any ghosts.

"Or maybe I'm just an idiot." He smiled bitterly and brought his eyes back ahead of him. He was listening to everything to ensure they weren't going to be surprised. "Oh and? I am the weapon, just wait until I get some real blood in me and you'll see. We'll kill Alec, I swear it."

It didn't feel like it had taken them very long to get back to the lighthouse, but there they were. They'd been going for a long time but she didn't seem any worse for the wear. Still, even she needed rest and food.

"As much as you don't want to hear this, we should stay here until sunrise. You should eat and rest, I can hunt." He pointed to the lighthouse and he could feel her annoyance and he snickered slightly. "I'll catch you something delicious and I'll stand guard. You'll be safe."

She actually didn't mind hearing it. The lighthouse was a pretty safe location, she guessed that's why Stefan had elected to keep Damon here. "Fine with me. If you don't need to sleep you can keep watch all night. I would have offered to trade off with you."

Once she was inside she hefted her pack off of her back. It was heavy, it was really heavy but she was built to carry heavy things. She was built to be a soldier but she wasn't much of a soldier. More like the lone wolf, she thought as she rolled her sleeping bag out of her pack and unpacked her few personal items.

She probably should have taken the time to eat but she was already tired from all of the walking they had done today and she knew she'd need her strength for what the following days would bring her.

Knowing that Damon was lurking around somewhere nearby it was easy to crawl into her sleeping bag and fall asleep.
