Who: James and Natasha
What: The fifteen year old is easily bored and went out to have some fun
Where: Their current place of residence
When: Afternoon
Status: In Progress/Closed
Rating: TBD

The fifteen year old boy crouched in the tree as he watched the vampire below. He knew it was dangerous to be out alone but it was daylight and a majority of the vampires stayed in during the day given their habit of combusting into flames unless they had a ring or some other sort of protection to be out in the sun. But it was clear from this vampire that it had no such protection if the crude but effective lean-to it had made was any indication. Grinning some, he leapt easily from tree to tree with the wind to hide his movements until he was behind the shelter.

Grabbing the heavy cloth, he yanked it off and leapt away as the vampire began screaming and running to find shade but to no avail. Grinning in victory, the teen carefully but quickly began making his way back to the shelter he and his mother were staying at. Easily maneuvering through the traps, he cracked his window open and pulled himself inside before turning to ease it shut, hoping his absence hadn't been noticed. He brushed some dirt off of his black leather jacket his mother had given him before tugging it off and tossing it haphazardly to the floor.

Natasha was in the midst of stripping the skin off a rabbit she'd caught earlier in the day, the bird having been set aside for the time being, when she heard him enter the room. She remained silent, keeping her back to him for now as she struggled to shove away memories and emotions nearly twenty years old. When his arms wrapped around her, she paused, then carefully set down the knife she was using and wiped her hands clean as she closed her eyes for a moment. Finally, Natasha turned in his arms and wrapped her own around him while resting her cheek against his hair. It surprised her, constantly, how tall he was getting, and watching him grow up before her eyes made her wish she could freeze time.

"I know," she whispered softly, then kissed the top of his head, tightening her arms. "I love you, James."

The moment he had started paying attention to things, James had begun noticing that his mother didn't look as old as she should be. The few people they had run into as they roamed that knew her had looked far older. But he knew it wasn't because his mother was a vampire. She held crosses, silver, herbs, everything that could affect the various types of vampires in the world that they knew of and nothing happened. So it was probably something else from her past.

Feeling her tighten her arms around him and kiss his head, he smiled some. "I love you too Mom," he said softly. He pulled back some and looked at the rabbit then up to her. "Do you think next place we stop to stay awhile we could try finding some deer?" he asked. He was afraid to ask what he really wanted though. If this place was so dangerous, why didn't they just move farther north or south, away from Everett and the threat of the vampires? Sure there were other dangers in other parts of the world but still. If this place held so much pain for his mother, they should leave it.

Natasha shook her hair back absently when he pulled back. It had grown long and she hadn't bothered to cut it in some time, letting the curls nearly reach her waist. At his question, she considered it for a moment, then gave a slow nod. "If it's safe enough, yes." Which was debatable. She'd been thinking for some time of just taking him and leaving Everett behind, but she still felt some small pull to the area, like something had been left unfinished. So she stayed on the far outskirts, helping occasionally, but primarily staying as far from other people as she could. After a moment, she smiled lightly and brushed the back of one hand down his cheek, smiling softly. "Remind me when we stop again."

James nodded. "I'll remind you," he said. He let his arms fall to his sides and stepped back so she could finish. He jammed his hands into the pockets of his black jacket. The material was the same that Natasha had her SHIELD outfits made out of but there was the outline of a star in red woven into the material.

He glanced at the rabbit before looking back at his mother. "Can I do anything to help?" he asked curiously.

She turned back to the rabbit and nodded to another bag sitting nearby. "Why don't you go ahead and chop the vegetables and herbs? We'll have a stew tonight. Something to build up our strength for the journey." Picking up the knife, and continued skinning the rabbit, then took the pelt over to a corner to lay it flat. With any luck, they would one day be able to come back and the skin would then be usable for something else. Returning to the rabbit itself, she began to cut the meat carefully from the bones.

James nodded and took the bag and went to the small table. Sitting down he tugged out a knife and began skillfully chopping them. Several minutes later he finished and he cleaned his knife off before replacing it back in it's sheath in his boot. His eyes drifted to watch his mother.

"Mom...? Could...can I ask you something?" he asked, looking at her.

"Of course." Moving a portion of the meat to one side that she had diced for the stew, she began to cut the remainder into strips to be dried for their journey. Her eyes remained on her work even as she motioned for James to go ahead and ask, her thoughts already half on the journey ahead as she reviewed her mental map to determine where to go. "What is it, James?"

He shifted some and watched her for a moment as he figured out how to ask what he wanted. Finally, he decided just asking was best. "Why do we stay in this area if it's so dangerous?" He trusted his mother but he didn't know what reasoning she had for them to stay here. It made no sense to him if it was so dangerous. Yes, they helped people they could but still. The world was full of people to help. Why couldn't SHIELD just bomb the area of Everett and move on?

Her hands paused for just a moment, then continued as she stayed silent for several seconds. As she finished with the meat in front of her, she wrapped the strips with cheesecloth, then finally lifted her head and looked over at him. "This place...It's...almost a home, to me, and I'd never had one before here. I don't like seeing how it's become, and I'm hoping to one day change it. If not for here..." Clint might still be alive, they might have long since been married and had several children of their own, or they might BOTH be dead by now. Dismissing the thought, she met her son's eyes, and after a moment gave a slow, genuine smile. "If not for this place, I'd never have been given my greatest gift...you. I've felt a lot of pain here, but...it's also where I've had the most happiness." She'd fallen in love with her son the day she'd felt him move inside her, and despite the changes that there could be in her life, she wouldn't change a single thing if it meant not having James.

The teen nodded some then blushed slightly when she said he was his greatest gift. He gave a small slightly annoyed teen sigh followed by a "Mom!" but it was clear in his eyes that he didn't mind it. He brushed some of his hair from his eyes and watched her.

"It may be a bit extreme but...why doesn't the military or SHIELD or someone just level this place to wipe out the vampires? Restart it after the dust settles?"

She grinned at the sigh and the exclamation, then finished with the cheesecloth, wrapping it inside another skin and placing it in a pack. At his question, she glanced over at him while she started to transfer the diced rabbit meat into a pot, motioning for him to add the plants. "Remember the story I told you about Manhattan, and the Council's mistaken decision?" She asked, then continued after waiting for his nod. "SHIELD itself, and Fury, has always believed that any civilian casualty is too much. They don't like or believe in collateral damage. A strike like that would be too dangerous to the area, and too many innocent lives would be lost...with no guarantee that the right people would be taken out."

James nodded some, remembering the story she sometimes told him as a child when he was scared and she mentioned some of her adventures she had been scared on. "Okay. It just...I dunno...seems like this place will never be vampire free," he said, glancing up at her. He slid the vegetables and herbs into the pot as well. He looked at her. "But it's always darkest before the dawn, right?"

Moving the pot onto the fire after adding a bit more water, she sat cross-legged and nodded. "Yes, that's true." And, for him, she had to believe it, despite the fact that personally...Natasha was starting to doubt that. Life was beginning to become nothing but a struggle for survival, in her mind, but she wasn't going to let James think that. Ever.

He studied her for a few moments and decided to press a bit more. "Mom...who did you lose?" he asked. James knew there was someone. He could see it every so often in her eyes when she thought he wasn't looking. And he hated that she was hurting. It made him want to kill all the vampires he could find for daring to hurt his mother like that.

Her eyes shifted to him in surprise, but it faded after a moment. After all, he was her son, and she'd taught him. It shouldn't surprise her that he was perceptive. Sighing quietly, her eyes finally shifted to the fire, wishing this day hadn't yet come. "I've told you about him before. Hawkeye. Clint Barton."

He kept his eyes on her, remembering the things she had told him about Hawkeye. "He was your partner on Strike Team: Delta, right?" he asked. And if he was remembering right he was the partner she had saved from an evil god. He was suddenly wondering just how close his mother and this Barton guy were.

Natasha nodded faintly. "He was my best friend....my only friend, for a very long time. And my partner. The way we fought worked well together, and meshed. I didn't like working with anyone else." Lifting her eyes after a moment, she glanced over to James again. "He's the one who recruited me to SHIELD."

James shifted over and sat by his mother and gave her a hug. He pulled back after a moment and looked up at her. "What about Dad?" he asked. He knew that Steve Rogers was his father though he hadn't spent much time with him. And he had never figured out why his mother and father weren't together in this fight. Surely Barton was a friend of his father's too.

Sliding an arm around him, she returned the hug, giving a faint, sad smile. At the question, she looked down at him again, meeting his eyes. "He was our friend, as well. Is my friend. I didn't meet him until after I'd been with SHIELD for some time, just before the Manhattan incident."

James stared at the fire for a moment after looking away from Natasha. "I know that...I meant...why aren't you with Dad now?" he asked, looking back up at her. He had been wondering why his parents weren't together. Surely if they were it would make the fight against vampires that much easier.

"A few years ago...he was sent by SHIELD to help out a small community. Since then, I don't know where he went. We lost track of him, and he lost track of us." She reached out to brush his cheek again. "But I know, James, that wherever he is, he's trying the best he can to get back to us. To you. That's another reason why I've kept us in this general vicinity...it's the last place he knew where we were."

James nodded some. Absently he fiddled with his hands and stared at them. "Do...do you think he'd be proud of me?" he asked, his voice a bit quiet. He tried his best to be what his mother wanted and what he thought his father wanted but sometimes it just felt like he was constantly falling short of that and he hated it.

Catching hold of his chin, she tilted his head up and met his eyes again, simple honesty shining in her own. "James, I know that if Steve were to see you today, he would be proud and honored to call you his son."

The teen smiled some before nodded, a small bit of a flush on his face. "I just don't want to let him down. Or you," he said, looking at her. "And...I am sorry I went off alone today. But there was a vampire nearby hiding from the sun, not even a mile and a half away."

"You won't." Her hand fell after a moment, and at his words, her eyes widened slightly. "That close?" She wished he'd told her before. Grabbing her pack, she reached into it for a pouch full of vervain, adding a small dose to the stew, then holding out a bit to him. It wasn't the first time they'd had the herb, and she knew that for some of the vampires, at least, it could keep them safe. "You killed it?"

He watched her add the vervain to the stew and he nodded. "Yeah. It was hiding from the sun in a lean-to," he said. He took the vervain and pulled a bit out for himself and looked at her. "I ripped the lean-to down and it burned in the sun," he returned.

She took a few leaves and chewed them herself, then swallowed as she studied him. "You're certain? You actually saw it burn?" Natasha didn't like the thought of one being so close, and was glad she'd decided they were going to be leaving the next day.

James nodded, swallowing the vervain and brushed his hair from his eyes again. "I didn't leave until it stopped moving. And put a branch in their heart for good measure. Better safe than sorry, right?" he asked, hoping he had done the right thing.
