Bored was not a good thing for Lavender. The day of classes was pretty lack luster, dinner was a quiet affair where she mostly ate just vegetables and some water. She spoke with some of her friends. Then went back to the dorms where she quickly finished her Charms essay. Honestly she didn't know what they were thinking giving homework on the first day?

Stretched out on her bed, Lavender was just putting the finishing touches on her essay when her stomach started growling. Having not eaten much earlier, she was in definite need of some food. She glanced over at her nightstand where a copy of last weeks gossip rag lay, already partly thumbed through. She shrugged as she got off the bed and tucked it in her robes. It was better than nothing, until the next issue arrived. She pulled her hair back and grabbed her wand then headed out of the tower and down to the kitchens.

A short time later, Lavender was happily seated at one of the tables eating mashed potatoes covered in gravy and had a rather impressive looking sundae seated next to it that she had yet to touch. She was happily engrossed in her magazine, reading about Kirley Duke's lastest escapades with some beautiful but relatively unknown model and had no idea that anyone else had entered the kitchens other than the usual bustling of house elves.

Lavender was ready to walk out and leave Pansy to her angry little tirade. She was no Hermione and if Pansy wanted to take out her wrath and frustration on the house elves so be it.

When she actually spoke though, Lavender took a closer look at the girl. Pansy looked as cold as ever, but her voice gave her away. It was probably completely foolish of her but her empathy won out over her good sense and she walked over and hugged Pansy. "I'm sorry, Pansy."

Pansy hadn't been hugged in ages. Her mother (emotional and affectionate) had embraced her frequently, and even her father, far less of either, had hugged her often. Lavender was a good hugger. Lavender's hug, more than anything else, so very nearly pushed Pansy over the edge into wrapping her arms around the other girl and into fucking fucking fucking cathartic tears and a burning burning desire for comfort that she knew the other girl would fulfill. Because of the thoughts that had already been occupying her head, Lavender's hug very nearly pushed Pansy over that thin edge.

And for this, Pansy hated her.

Nearly as badly as she wanted to return Lavender's embrace and sob for hours, she wanted to shove the girl off and snarl words that would destroy her and break her.

But she couldn't.

All she could do (and even for this, it took all her strength to resist both of the alarmingly violent pulls urging her to do otherwise) was stand stiff as a board, harden her voice to metal, and speak coldly, "Thank you."

Pansy Parkinson was apologizing. It was unheard-of, after all. She figured that anybody could tell that she meant it. But she didn't even care about that so long as they could also tell that it was imperative that they let her be alone.

Lavender hardly expected the girl to respond and part of her was a little glad she didn't. She wasn't sure she'd really know what to do with a sobbing and somewhat affectionate Pansy Parkinson. Still, she hadn't shoved her away and that was something she supposed.

As soon as Pansy spoke Lavender released her. She stood back and prevented herself from shaking her head in sympathy. Lavender was sure that Pansy wanted none of that. She looked down at her shoes and scuffed them lightly on the floor before replying. "You're welcome. I'll leave you to your drinking."

Pansy shot Lavender a halfhearted sneer in response and wandered further into the kitchens, away from the other girl, with her nose in the air. It wasn't long before she'd found Dobby, who (much to her annoyance but not at all to her surprise) shrunk well back upon seeing her. Sure she hated the rat but he worked in the kitchen and she needed her Firewhiskey and goddammit she was going to make this crying thing work for her if she had to. Although she tried to maintain her cold and regal air, she didn't bother controlling the warbles in her voice when she told the house-elf, "I would like to have some Firewhiskey."

Well, now that he realized she was on the verge of crying, she could see Dobby slowly straightening back up from his shying-away posture. She needed that fucking Firewhiskey. Grimacing internally, she added one word: "Please." And soon Dobby was telling her to follow him.

Finally.
