Who: Roger Davies & Lucy Elkins
When: 9th January, 1998 (Backdated)
Where: Hogsmeade Village
What: It's a Hogsmeade visit day and Lucy meets up with Roger to catch up.
Rating: PG

There was a good dusting of snow on the ground, which wasn't too unusual for that time of year when temperatures tended to average around 5°C to 7°C. Roger could see his breath as he breathed a little heavier on his trek from Honeydukes to Madam Rosmerta's pub. The Three Broomsticks Inn loomed in front of him soon enough and it wasn't too long before he was entering the pub portion of the establishment.

Shaking the snow off his shoulders, he scanned the pub for Lucy before spotting her in a somewhat secluded portion of the place. A smile crossed his face, before he headed in the direction of the slender blonde. It was always nice seeing the younger Ravenclaw, even after leaving Hogwarts. They had cultivated quite the relationship and she was, to Roger, the sister he never had the blessing of having before.

"I hope you haven't been waiting for too long," he said, smiling at her as he undid his scarf and took his jacket off. His gloves soon followed, before he pulled a box out of the Honeydukes bag he had with him and presented her with it. "I thought I would stop somewhere and get you something first. I don't know what they're feeding you up there, but I know that you can't ever have enough sweets." The boxed contained a mixture of Honeydukes' productions, including Chocoballs, Chocolate Frogs, Fizzing Whizzbees, Ice Mice, and, of course, Sugar Quills.

After awhile, you got used to the attention. And it wasn't as much attention as someone like Oliver Wood or Marcus Flint got, so Roger dealt with it pretty easily. Mostly, he just ignored it until someone approached him for an autograph or a conversation.

Like now. His own attention was solely on Lucy. Some people might have gotten the wrong idea about why he was there with Lucy, but whatever they thought, Roger wasn't really fazed.

"A Slytherin. That loves animals." That was a surprise. "Huh." Okay, so maybe he should have given her a little more credit in knowing the people she chose to hang around with, but he couldn't help it! He didn't know this guy personally and to start hearing about him from out of nowhere was disconcerting. "Sorry, it's just a little surprising," he preemptively offered her, before she could kick him in the shins or something. "You don't hear that every day, is all."

In all the time Lucy and Roger had been friends, it never occurred to her that someone might think she was with Roger for a reason other than just being the type of friends they were. She usually understood the dirty looks to think that people were jealous she was hanging with a professional Quidditch player - not that she might have been dating him. That idea was weird, enough.

She laughed softly at the look on his face. She had to admit, she understood what the preconceived notions of Slytherins were. Brass. Stupid. Generally cruel and weird. Thankfully, and obviously enough, Lucy didn't hang much with those sort. And Nikolas didn't fall into any of those categories.

"No, you don't," she said, shrugging her shoulders slightly. "He's certainly a bit different than the rest of them. I wasn't making that part up, you know."

They had been friends pre-semi-fame and him getting into Quidditch like this hadn't changed their relationship one bit. He still picked on her, she still poked fun at him, and their sibling-esque relationship remained intact. Though she was beautiful and intelligent and everything one would want in a woman, he had never seen her as a viable partner and probably never would.

Probably.

"I know. You wouldn't make that kind of thing up, but nonetheless. House prejudices are hard to overocme, but look at you kids breaking down barriers," he said with a snicker.

She'd have to be classified as blind, or daft or in denial to not know that Roger Davies was quite the catch. She'd been told countless times by her friends, of course, but she'd played it off as something that came along with knowing Roger.

To be honest, the idea of them hadn't ever crossed her mind.

Purely because in the back of her mind, she knew he'd never even think about it. And so subconsciously, she didn't either. If that made sense.

"That they are," she said, nudging her pint glass in his direction with a pointed glance. "It's alright. I know not everyone can be as cool and opened-minded as I am."

Give it a few years, put a few drinks in him, and then give him a shake, and there was a good chance that he would do something he would regret with Lucy. But that wasn't the issue now nor did he ever think it would ever be in the future. She was, simply enough, the little sister that he never had.

She had fallen into that role unexpectedly for him, but he had embraced it because it made sense then and it still did now.

"I bow to your superior open-mindedness," he said with a smirk, angling his head down in a sort of bow. "All hail Lucy the Understanding."

Given her strained relationship with her actual older brother, Lucy had taken to Roger quite fiercely. If only because he gave her the comfort of knowing that she had someone she could always call on, no matter what. Of course, she did like him. He was quite fun to hang around with and usually understood her better than most.

"As you should," she mused, crossing her arms over her chest. She let a beat pass before asking, "Hey, um, how's your mum doing with all of this?"

She hadn't wanted to bring up such a difficult topic, but she thought she should ask eventually.

It was nice having someone that cared about him, not because they thought he was talented or handsome, but because they genuinely cared about him. He didn't have to second guess Lucy's intentions or suffer through constant blows to his ego with her because they could be honest and sincere and...

Roger now had to lie to her. It wasn't because he didn't trust her, but talking about his mother and what she was really doing right then wasn't a good idea in a public place. "Oh, you know. She took some time off from the Ministry." Which wasn't a lie. "So she's good." Okay, so it was more of a lie of omission rather than an outright lie, but she could probably tell that something was up by the way he was acting a little shifty.

She leaned back in her seat, one ankle crossing over the other as she watched Roger's switch in disposition. Her brows furrowed slightly as she studied him for a moment. A small nod of her head as she noticed just how different his body movements had seemed just then. She titled her head to the side.

"That's great," she responded, a knowing look apparent on her face. "Your mum should certainly take advantage of the vacation time then."

She hiked an eyebrow slightly.

His gestures had become wooden and his tone of voice had been obviously effected by her question. Anyone that might have been listening in too closely might have noticed that something was up, but Roger wasn't exactly trained in keeping his cool.

He would need to work on that.

"That's what we've all been telling her. But she's all work, work, work. Bet she's trying to work from home even now." Finishing his drink, he returned her raised eyebrows. "Want to go for a walk? I might have bought sweets for you, but I should pick some up myself for my date tonight."

"Sometimes there's no convincing someone," she replied.

Her eyes traveled over the area around her. The Three Broomsticks was still as busy and buzzing as it had been when she had first come in to wait for Roger. A girl, one she recognized from her Herbology class was looking wistfully toward Roger as she laid eyes on her. She pushed the empty pint glass toward the center of the table as she rose from her seat.

"Of course," she told him, beginning to busy herself with getting on her coat and gloves. "I didn't know you had a date tonight."

"I have a date most nights," he said, winking at her though he was lying about having a date that night. Roger had just been looking for an excuse to get out of there so that they could talk in a more private nook somewhere. There were plenty of those in Hogsmeade Village.

Wrapping his scarf around his neck, he offered her his arm while ignoring the looks their leaving was getting. "As the president of my fan club, I thought you should have known that already."

Almost as if it was instinct, Lucy linked her arm with Roger as the pair made their way through the crowd at the Three Broomsticks and out into the brisk, if not slightly chilly winter air. "I keep tab on your fans, not your date book," she told him teasingly.

As Lucy sidestepped a block of snow, she craned her neck toward Roger, her eyebrows raised again slightly in question. "So, I take it you're going to tell me the truth now?" she asked him.

Her voice didn't sound demanding or irritated that Roger hadn't been completely honest in the pub. In fact, she knew she should have known better than to ask in such a crowded place. But it took some getting used to. Lucy wasn't quite good at all this.

"You should remedy that, seeing as most of my dates are fans." Which wasn't strictly true, but a good deal of them he met after games or because they recognized him while he was out. The ones that seemed interesting and not like potential stalkers got calls back, if he was lucky enough to get their numbers.

Ignoring the stares as they made their way out of the Three Broomsticks, he waited until they were out of the earshot before speaking again.

"Mum's on the run," he said, steering her down a more quiet path void of people. "I didn't want to say that in there in case anyone overheard us, but you know she's Muggleborn, right?"

As Roger began to speak, she could sense the switch in his tone of voice as he mentioned his mother finally. She kept her eyes focused on the ground before them. Half because she wanted to be careful to avoid the ice, the other because she wasn't sure she'd be able to meet Roger's eyes at that moment.

She had expected something of the sort. She had known, of course. Roger had mentioned it in passing over the years -there hadn't been a reason he wouldn't otherwise until now. She mulled over what he had told her for a moment before finally looking back up at him.

"Of course," she said, her voice quiet. "Do you know where she is? Have you talked to her? Merlin, I'm sorry, Roger."

"Don't apologize. You're not the arses that came up with those stupid decrees," he said, unlinking his arms only to pull her close and squeeze her a little. He only pulled away to give her a little breathing room, as they continued to walk down paths that were fairly empty.

"She's staying with some of my father's family. She wasn't sure if staying with her own family would only put the in danger, so she didn't want to risk it." His jaw was tightening in a way that signaled that he wasn't the least bit happy, but it was not at all directed at Lucy. "I talk to her when I can, but I can't visit her." He wasn't as well known as Wood, but he was a public figure and easy to track. Roger knew Lucy was smart enough to realize that without having him say it.

He was pretty sure he couldn't say it even if she asked. It was just how bad it was.

Thankful that the path they chose was quite possibly one of the emptier ones in the village, she stuck her hands in the pockets of her jacket while the bag from Roger hung from around her wrist. She thought, momentarily, of her own family. It had been a little while since they had went off to South Africa. She had a feeling that they were alright, but she only wished she could see it in writing.

She let out a short breath, her eyes watching as her breath lingered in the air for a moment.

"As long as she's safe," Lucy told him, reaching out briefly to squeeze his arm. "Did she- um, the registration? Did she go in?"

Lucy couldn't be sure she remembered.

Shaking his head, he told her, "She refuse it. She didn't even bother clearing out her desk at the Ministry and just took out, before they could force her to sent her away." Just the thought of his mum in Azkaban had him wanting to find the committee in charge of these stupid decrees and beating them to a bloody pump.

If only that were possible.

"Sorry, I mean, this probably isn't something I should be talking to you about." He didn't want to scare her.

"This is something I couldn't ignore if I tried," she told him, a gentle smile following.

It was true. These decrees related to every fiber of her being. She was Muggleborn. She couldn't escape it, couldn't hide it. She didn't want to, either. She shrugged her shoulders.

"Your mum is one brave woman," she continued. "I have a feeling she's going to be just fine. I certainly wouldn't want to mess with her, at least."

This wasn't something he wanted her to worry about on top of her own circumstances. He knew that she was Muggleborn and he didn't want to add his own issues in regards to the decrees onto her own worries.

"Not many people would," Roger said with a small smile, as they started down a path with more people. "You should head back before it gets too dark. I'll walk you back."

Tugging back at her arm sleeve, she took a breif glance at her watch before her eyes darted up to the sky. The rest of her classmates would be heading back up any time now. She looked to Roger with a small smile.

"Thanks," she told him. "We wouldn't want you running behind with all those birds you've got lined up for tonight," she added teasingly.

"Oh come now, you know I would rather spend my time with you over anyone else. Save for Madam Rosmerta. You think she'd ever take me up on a date?" He asked teasingly, knowing that particular schoolboy fantasy was one that a lot of other Hogwarts students had and was impossible.

Ruffling her hair again and getting it nice and messy, he teased, "Besides, we should get you back before your bedtime."

"I think Madam Rosmerta is quite happy dating men her own age," Lucy told him, smiling broadly.

She groaned slightly, then, under his messy touch and she swatted away at his hands. Doing her best to flatten out the damage she scrunched her nose at him in response.

"Hmph! Bedtimes.." she grumbled slighly, a small smile pulling at her lips. "I'm not fourteen anymore, you know."

"Are you sure? You still look fourteen to me," he laughed as they made their way to the castle. The path was familiar, despite not having walked it since he had left. It had been years, but it only felt like yesterday to him that he had been walking up and down this very path with his mates.

Time really did fly when you weren't paying attention to it.

"Bet you still have footie pajamas with bunny ears."

"Tucked away in a trunk, of course," she told him smartly, turning up her nose slightly in pride.

As they fell into step along the few crowds managing their way back to Hogwarts, Lucy felt as if it was like old times, having Roger among the crowd. It had been a little while now since Roger had been a student and Lucy found she often missed him while lounging in the Common Room.

"And if I still look fourteen, then what does that say about you, hm?"

"That I'm a very lovely young man for offering to walk you back up to the castle before it got too dark," he said, sniffing at her before burying his hand in her side and tickling her for a brief moment.

Grinning wide, he said, "Because I have no idea what else you might mean to imply!"

The others on the path back to Hogwarts stared a little, but left them alone for the most part. The older students remembered him from his days at the school, while the younger ones might have seen a game or two of his. But thankfully no one approached them in the last few minutes leading up to the castle.

When they finally reached the gates, Roger paused there and scooped her up into a big hug. "It was nice to see you again Luce."
