Who: Roger Davies & Lucy Elkins
When: 9th January, 1998 (Backdated)
Where: Hogsmeade Village
What: It's a Hogsmeade visit day and Lucy meets up with Roger to catch up.
Rating: PG

There was a good dusting of snow on the ground, which wasn't too unusual for that time of year when temperatures tended to average around 5°C to 7°C. Roger could see his breath as he breathed a little heavier on his trek from Honeydukes to Madam Rosmerta's pub. The Three Broomsticks Inn loomed in front of him soon enough and it wasn't too long before he was entering the pub portion of the establishment.

Shaking the snow off his shoulders, he scanned the pub for Lucy before spotting her in a somewhat secluded portion of the place. A smile crossed his face, before he headed in the direction of the slender blonde. It was always nice seeing the younger Ravenclaw, even after leaving Hogwarts. They had cultivated quite the relationship and she was, to Roger, the sister he never had the blessing of having before.

"I hope you haven't been waiting for too long," he said, smiling at her as he undid his scarf and took his jacket off. His gloves soon followed, before he pulled a box out of the Honeydukes bag he had with him and presented her with it. "I thought I would stop somewhere and get you something first. I don't know what they're feeding you up there, but I know that you can't ever have enough sweets." The boxed contained a mixture of Honeydukes' productions, including Chocoballs, Chocolate Frogs, Fizzing Whizzbees, Ice Mice, and, of course, Sugar Quills.

The pub was busier than Lucy thought it would be. She half-expected that after the last decree had been posted, the wizarding world would become quieter, perhaps a bit more sparse over time. At that moment, however, the pub was the busiest she had ever seen it. Maybe the rest of the wizarding world was feeling as stubborn as she was. So many students stayed behind, unsure of how safe they would be leaving Hogwarts. A small part of Lucy had the same thought.

But as she spotted Roger coming in her direction, she knew that she had made the right choice. It had been too long since she had seen the older boy, though she wasn't sure if she could thank Hogwarts or his budding Quidditch career for that.

She smiled broadly as she rose from her seat, her eyes moving from Roger's face to the box he had given her.

"You're a bloody saint, you know that?" she told him before hugging him tightly. "Thank you!"

"Oh I know, Lucy. I know." Ruffling her hair like she was still that fourteen year old girl, nervous for her exams, he returned her hug and even picked her up a few inches off the ground. For a few seconds, he just held on. It was nice to not worry about the real world, even for a few moments.

Finally, he let go and they took their seats, while he stuffed the box back into the bag and pushed it toward her so that she wouldn't forget it. "You look like you've gotten taller. What are you now? Just hitting 1.5 meters?" He joked, smirking a little then.

It was easy to fall back into old habits with, despite not seeing each other as often as they had when he was still attending Hogwarts.

With her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, her eyes closed for a brief moment as he lifted her in the air.

Although Lucy had become incredibly close with the girls in her year, and her friendship with Nikolas had been something she'd been thinking about a more lately, it was nice to know that she always had Roger, no matter what. Their relationship was something Lucy had come to really care about.

As they let go and settled into their seats, Lucy couldn't help but grin. It was so easy for them to joke back and forth with each other. "I'll have you know I'm actually 1.6! Nearly 1.65! Soon I'll be taller than you," she added with a slink wink.

Though she was sure she was practically done growing, really.

There were a small handful of people in the world that he considered family. There was no doubt in his mind, or to anyone that saw them together, that these two were close. Lucy also had the unique distinction of being one of the only women in the world that he wouldn't ever dream of flirting with. Which, when you knew Roger, meant that he really cared.

He had been worried about her, ever since all these stupid decrees started being made. He knew she was a Muggleborn and he knew that a lot of them were on the run. She was brave by coming back to Hogwarts and he only hoped that she wouldn't have to go into hiding like his mother had.

But, for the moment, he kept things light as he grinned at her. "Then I expect the next time I see you, you'll be able to pick me up, you giantess. Did you have any problems getting here?"

Lucy brought her legs up on the chair, making herself comfortable in the wooden seat. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, a slight roll of her eyes following his first statement. "I don't know if I'll ever be able to pick you up. Considering your head weighs so much..."

She wrinkled her nose before laughing slightly at her own joke. It wasn't often she could be so silly. People generally saw her as this shy and rather timid girl. But for the most part, when she was feeling comfortable, she could be incredibly carefree.

"Not many people decided to come down this time around," she told him. "It's nice to actually get out of there for a little while."

"A valid point, but I still maintain it's a well deserved large head," he said, ordering a round of Butterbeers for them as he smiled at her fondly. He was used to jokes about his ego and, while they could get old on occasion, he embraced them rather than fight him.

Because yes, he had an ego and yes, jokes were to be expected.

"I expect it would be. No one's said anything to you, right?" It had been easier to shield her from bullies or anyone that might have anything to say to her when he had been Hogwarts. But from outside of the castle, he couldn't do much unless she told him to.

Generally, Lucy found that she knew not a better way to get under Roger's skin than to pick on his ego. She found, however, that she knew him well enough to know that there was a stitch of modesty underneath his exterior. He was much more than the eye-candy all of her friends thought he was, or the shiny new Quidditch player everyone seemed to be raving about.

"Quite the deserved extra weight," she concluded, nodding her head rather dramatically. "And I'm damn proud of it."

She leaned back in her seat before brushing her hair out of her eyes.

"No," she said, sighing slightly. It had been an incredibly quiet return. "No one knows I'm, well.. Just a handful of people."

Laughing, he shook his head as he picked up a Butterbeer that had been deposited in front of them. "You know exactly what to say." A lot of people tended to forget that underneath the ego and talk, he was still a Ravenclaw who had been Sorted into the house of the wise for a reason. But those that realized that there was much more underneath the shiny exterior were special to him in their own ways.

Little Lucy was much wiser and much more mature than some of the girls in her year. He was thankful for that, since it was refreshing to have someone around that didn't set out to knock him down a peg or two for the image he put out or to try and get in his pants (which was less of a problem to Roger than it could have been).

"I'm not telling you of shame or anything, but keep it that way, yeah? The less people to know and talk about it, the better. Some of the students in there, well. They aren't the good sort." He knew she was already smart enough to realize all that, but it never hurt to put it out there. "What does McGonagall have to say about all this? Have there been any problems at the school because of the decrees?"

Lucy's hand slid around the pint glass in front of her. She slid the Butterbeer closer toward her but didn't take a drink just yet. Instead, she rose the glass toward him in a mock salute. "I do my best, you know."

A small smile played across her face as she finally brought the glass to her lips. The warmth of the Butterbeer soothed her spirits a little bit as she sat there. She couldn't be sure though, if it was the Butterbeer or the fact that she hadn't seen Roger in so long. The rest of the girls had been a little jealous when she skived off to meet him. Some had wanted to come along.

"No, they're not," Lucy responded, briefly letting a small huff of distaste filter through her voice. "And they're making their opinions on the situation incredibly public. McGonagall is doing her best, I think. There's been a bit of a reaction. Everyone is constantly talking, whispering."

She was silent for a moment.

"Post in the morning is becoming awkward. What with the Prophet and all. And when you're expecting letters to come in the mail and they're not, well, I've seen a lot of people crying lately."

He reached forward with his drink, tapping it against hers in the toast. "It's all I really expect from you. And seeing as you're a Ravenclaw, it's the very best that I expect from you." He might not have been so obviously Ravenclawish, but he did tend to hold himself and his former House in higher regard.

As amazing as it was how much attention a year playing first string Chaser on a fairly good Quidditch team, he was glad that Lucy had come alone. If he had wanted to get mobbed by fans, he would have gone to visit the castle itself. One day, he might, but today was totally dedicated to playing catchup with Lucy.

Which unfortunately meant talking about some unpleasant things.

It was as he expected it to be going at Hogwarts. People talking, the Slytherins probably being arses about everything, and just a whole lot of uncertainty and fear. He reached over, patting her hand with his own. "I don't suppose you found yourself a boyfriend to distract yourself from all this with?" Because there was no way in hell he was going to tell her to provoke anyone and stand up to people voicing their terrible opinions. No, that was certainly too dangerous. So he fell back on one of his old standby items to tease her with.

With Roger now out of Hogwarts for a couple of years, the two couldn't see each other as often as they did before. The times they could, she was quite serious in spending as much time with him as possible. With break having been cut short, it was hard to see him. Thankfully, the visit at Hogsmeade was possible.

However, it did bring up a few not so happy things.

"A boyfriend?" Lucy repeated, the inflection catching slightly as the question surprised her. A boyfriend. She blinked. "No. There isn't- I mean, I don't- no, no boyfriend."

Her eyes averted toward the table.

"Well, there might be someone I wouldn't mind, maybe, oh, I don't know."

She grew so flushed when it came to talking about boys, no mind that she was talking about them to one.

While she wasn't shy around him anymore, he did remember that it wasn't the case with everyone else. He grinned, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, so there is someone? Well, let's have his name. I have to know who to threaten in the future."

He was kidding, of course, but it wouldn't hurt knowing who he would have to beat up if they made her cry. If they couldn't see what was in front of them, they were obviously blind.

Normally, he wouldn't have strayed to such silly topics so quickly, but he wanted to move away from all the troubles going on right then. It wasn't that he was one of those people that simply preferred to live in ignorance. Rather, he wanted to focus on the good rather than the bad. Lucy was sixteen and, while he wasn't much older, he didn't want to panic her.

"Do you talk to him much?"

Lucy held the pint in both of her hands as she brought the glass to her lips. She took a long sip before thinking of the right way to go about telling Roger that although Nikolas Vaisey was probably the nicest and most open-minded Slytherin she had ever met, he was still in the house Roger detested the most. And that might prove to give Roger more reason to threaten him.

"Oh, um, Nikolas Vaisey?" she raised in her eyebrows in hopes that Roger hadn't heard of him. Though now that he was Captain of the Slytherin team, she'd had the idea Roger would have at least known of him.

"He's really very nice," she continued. "He helps me with my Animagus studies sometimes."

And he knew she was Muggleborn, but maybe Roger didn't need to know that.

Roger didn't like Slytherins all that much. Not only did most of them turn out to be dirty cheats when it came to Quidditch, but most of them held this silly notion that Muggles and Muggleborns were somehow less worthy of breathing the same air as them.

Which, as far as Roger was concerned, was complete and utter bullshit.

Roger followed Hogwarts Quidditch enough to recognize some of the players names when he heard them. As a Hogwarts alumni and former House Captain himself, it was only expected. His eyebrows disappeared into his hairline as he put two and two together.

"The same Vaisey that's currently Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team?" The 'Are you mad?' almost rolled off his tongue, but he held it back so that she could explain this to him somehow.

This reaction was not a surprise to Lucy. In fact, moments after telling Roger who it was she was sort of crushing on, she pulled her sweater up to her chin and hid underneath the cowl. As she watched his eyebrows raise higher and higher, she had the distinct urge to laugh. The immediate response was enough to make the decision for her and so she decided not to.

She swallowed back the laugh and forced herself to have a more serious expression.

"He's rather a good choice, I think," she told him, almost feeling as if she was defending Nikolas to her father or Grayson. Roger wasn't much different, though. "Malfoy was terrible for captain seeing as he's not even very that great at the sport in the first place."

Perhaps if she moved on to a different subject.. well, she didn't think she could really escape this.

"He's different than the rest of them," she said. "He doesn't care that I'm, well, what I am."

For a second, Roger thought she was going to laugh. And then he might have had a reaction that might have been a little loud, but thankfully for the both of them, she put on a more serious face.

This wasn't a laughing matter!

"First off, what kind of Ravenclaw are you for applauding good decisions made by the other houses' quidditch teams? Second? Don't change the subject." Yes, a lot of his reaction had to do house prejudices. But he was also concerned for her. Times weren't good for Muggleborns and with all these decrees going around, Slytherins weren't to be trusted.

Rubbing his temples, he closed his eyes and asked in a tightly controlled voice, "How do you know he's different?" Roger was certain he didn't have to tell her that he didn't approve of her telling this Vaisey character about her blood status.

Her brows furrowed in angst. She hadn't thought that Roger would ever get this agitated over anything she could possibly tell him. She wasn't daft; she understood that fraternizing with Slytherins could get her into trouble. Granted, she'd never felt the prejudices for them that they felt for everyone else, but even she knew that some weren't worth getting involved with. But she wasn't so naive to think that they were all one way or the other. People were always in the shades between.

She narrowed her eyes at Roger, her arms firmly crossed over her chest.

"I take an interest in Quidditch regardless of house, you know that," she told him matter-of-factly. "And second, Nikolas is barely even close with anyone in his own house. Even his best mate is a Ravenclaw."

She sighed, albeit more dramatically than was necessary.

"You ought to trust me a little bit," she continued. "I've got a good amount of taste in people. I'm friends with you, aren't I"?

"You would have to be daft if you didn't think being friends with me is in good taste. Your taste isn't in doubt. It's this...Vaisey character that I'm doubting. Just because he isn't interested in being friends with his housemates, doesn't mean that he won't..."

Roger trailed off then because he was pretty sure if he continued, he would start yelling. And possibly frighten her. And he hadn't met up with Lucy just to yell at her. Was he a little overprotective? Sure, if you wanted to go with understatements.

"I-You know why I'm worried. Can you honestly blame me?" He questioned, when he was sure he could speak without sounding all sorts of annoyed.

Lucy opened her mouth to speak. She thought she had something to say to shut him up and convince Roger that she was fine and that Nikolas was fine. But she couldn't make Roger see Nikolas the way she saw him. The truth of the matter was that they could be arguing about nothing. She couldn't even tell Roger that he liked her back.

And she knew herself well enough to know that she would never try and figure out the answer. She was far too worried of hearing him say that he didn't fancy her that way, or something.

She shook her head.

"No, I can't," she said as she suddenly became interested in the still frosted pint glass near her. She rubbed at the condensation before looking back up to Roger. "I know you're worried about me. I'm worried about everything. But you don't know him and I can't make you see him the way I see him, I know that. But you've got to trust me-"

She paused, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"And besides, if he ever does anything wrong, I know I've got someone who can pummel him, if need be."

He smiled at that, his anxiety and anger deflating. He was still worried and he would probably be asking some people some questions, but Lucy was safe from questions for now. "I guess I can live with that. But you better hope that he doesn't need to be pummeled." There wouldn't be anything left to identify him with, if he did wrong by Lucy.

It didn't even cross Roger's mind that Vaisey didn't return Lucy's feelings. Logically, he knew that Lucy was shy and there might have been a chance that she hadn't told this boy that she liked him. However, being around her and knowing how not shy she was, it was hard to remember that she wasn't like this with everyone.

Although still feeling rather uneasy with their discussion, Lucy forced herself to put it out of her mind. Roger really only meant the best and his intentions were honorable. She knew she was lucky to have someone always looking out for her. Even if it did border on annoying and over-protective, she secretly really liked it.

Finally taking a sip of her butterbeer, she took a small breath before looking at Roger with a small, rueful sort of smile.

"What about you, hm?" she asked him. "Any one in your life I ought to know about?"

"Well," he drawled, stretching out on his side of the table. "There was Jasmine last night, Tina the night before, and Zara last week..." Roger said, grinning slightly. Lucy knew that he was not an one woman type of guy. "Oh and Cho shot me down. Again. So there's that."

And yet, he was never going to give up on Cho Chang because he was stubborn. Imagine that.

"But you know me. I'm just trying to have a good time right now." While there was still time, he thought silently to himself.

Lucy raised an eyebrow. In all the years she had known Roger, he was always after Cho. Why? Lucy never really saw what everyone else saw in the girl. For Merlin's sake, she's dated everyone from Harry Potter to Cedric Diggory. But, she didn't ask questions - at least not about that. She knew that it was a sore subject for Roger.

"Perhaps next time," Lucy offered, shrugging her shoulders. "All these girls - don't they get a little upset when you don't call them afterward? Or I mean, ever see them again?"

She grinned broadly.

It was the fact that she wouldn't date Roger that kept Roger interested over the years. It didn't hurt that she was gorgeous and intelligent to boot. What wasn't there to like about smart, beautiful women?

While Roger wasn't a Gryffindor, he did share in the stubborn trait that they seemed to possess. At least, when it came to Cho.

"I sometimes do see them again or give them a call, but it isn't as if most of them are interested in settling down with a Quidditch player either." A lot of them were after the bragging rights that came with being with Roger. "They get to say that they went out with me and I get to enjoy an evening with them. It seems fair to me."

"I think I can see the logic."

She nodded her head thoughtfully as she pondered the whole game. It didn't seem very complicated to her, just a bit fruitless. Wasn't the whole point of being with someone to be with them? Perhaps spend more time together than just a night or a weekend? She took a long sip of her drink before smiling at Roger.

"And what about you? Think you're ever going to settle down?"

She hiked an eyebrow in question, though she was certain she already knew the answer.
