Who: Alfie and OPEN
What: Alfie wants to try out his Christmas present
Where: Quidditch Pitch
When: During the party in the Great Hall, extended curfew FTW!
Rating/Warning: TBA

Alfie thought about asking Julien to go out with him, but if the charm didn't work he didn't want Julien there to feel bad about it. Not that he didn't think Julien was brilliant, but those things were tricky, weren't they? Besides, he didn't want to force the other boy out into the cold just to watch him fall off his broom.

The problem was - once he was in the air, hovering at the highest goal point, it was really damn hard to force himself to actually, on purpose, fall off of said broom. He squeezed his eyes shut and felt the necklace Julien had given him, and then he opened them again, and finally screwed up the courage to let himself lose his balance, tumbling off his broom and down... and down.. and down... and he was fairly sure he was about to piss his pants, and he was whimpering, and he knew this was really, really going to hurt, and he'd been a moron to come out here without someone who could cart him off to Pomfrey afterwards...

Except then he hit the ground, and it was like landing on a bloody cushion. Dizzy, still shaking, he jumped up and pumped his fist in the air. It had worked! That was sodding brilliant! ... Really against the rules to use in a game, so he wouldn't be able to wear it then, but still. Well done, Julien. He couldn't wait to tell him.

Although he'd attended at first, Merlin wasn't really a partygoer and the sudden crush of kids back at school was making him feel a little claustrophobic besides.

He'd snuck out of the party to get some air, and it was while he'd been loitering in the freezing cold that he saw someone fall from the sky, or so it seemed to him. Looking up he saw the broom, put two and two together pretty quickly and then drew his wand, running over to the form and freaking out about what kind of mess he'd see once he got close... apparently, no kind of mess.

He could swear that he'd seen the kid fall though. "Uhm... are you okay?" He asked cautiously. He couldn't see any horrendously broken bones.

Alfie was still bouncing, ridiculously happy despite what was going on - but the rush of falling while knowing he wouldn't be hurt was sort of brilliant, and so was Julien.

When another voice was there, though, he spun toward it. It was a lower form boy he vaguely recognized, but couldn't place. "Yeah!" He said in a rush, "I'm fine! Didn't realize anyone saw..."

"Saw you fall from the sky and not get hurt?" Merlin questioned, still rather disquieted by what he'd seen, still looking Alfie over. "Did you hit your head?" That might explain the happy look on the older boy's face; Merlin was sure he wouldn't have seemed this happy had he just fallen from mid-air.

"I didn't hit anything," Alfie said with a shrug, holding his hand out to call his broom back to him. He looked it over, but it seemed to have landed okay. A few twigs out of place, but he bent them back. "Well, I did. I'm just fine."

"You did hit your head?" Merlin asked, because that made more sense than this. "You can't have fallen from up there and not get hurt. Do you want to go to the Infirmary? I can take you if you like. Or would it be safer to call a teacher? Should I do that?" It was clear he was a little flustered.

Alfie laughed again, and then waved a hand to wave off the questions. "No, seriously, I'm fine. I didn't hurt anything at all. I mean, I should have, but I didn't."

"You should have, yes. And I think you did... maybe you should just sit here until I get a professor..." Merlin said, beginning to edge away until he realised that not only was it quite cold out here but also that he probably shouldn't leave someone with a potentially dangerous head injury alone. "Actually, you should probably come with me."

"Don't get a professor!" Alfie said, alarmed. "They're all the party, besides, and I wasn't doing anything that needs to be reported! I'm fine!"

Merlin jumped at the sudden alarm in Alfie's voice, being a timid kind of creature, and the older boy's insistence took the wind out of his heart-in-the-right-place sails a little bit. He couldn't just leave though, if something happened and the boy suffered later from his injury then he didn't think he'd be able to live with himself for just leaving him here. "Would you like me to walk you back to your dorm?"

Alfie frowned at that, "Are you kidding? I have hours left for this new curfew. I was going to fly again. You want to fly with me?"

The Gryffindor looked worried. "You just had a really long fall... I don't think it's a good idea for you to be flying again so soon. Don't you think?"

Alfie was getting a little fed up with the questions, "Look, bloke... what's your name? You're a fifth year, right? I didn't hurt myself, and I have permission to be out here, so if you're going to be a berk about it, you can sod off, right? I'm fine!"

Merlin took a step back but only because he wanted to be able to duck in case a curse or a fist was soon to be heading this way. He didn't rise to the other boy's words, although he was quietly hurt by them, because he'd seen that fall and it still made no sense. "How did you fall from there and be fine." He was shy at the best of times, but the Gryffindor in him wouldn't let him leave after seeing the older kid fall.

Alfie wasn't confrontational by nature, and he was happy enough to pal around with just about anyone. He just didn't want to get dragged back to the castle yet.

He eyed the boy slowly, then shrugged. "You won't tell?"

Merlin thought that over. "If it's something that doesn't involve anyone else getting hurt or anything like that then no, I won't tell."

"You're not a prefect or something, are you?" Alfie didn't usually care about keeping most secrets, either, but Julien's charm was special.

"I'm not, but I wouldn't be able to keep a secret if I knew that it might be harmful." Merlin said, quiet but honest, perhaps a little too much so.

Alfie rolled his eyes. "Just like a Gryffindor," He said, with no real venom behind it. Then he pulled aside his collar, stepping into the light so the boy could see his necklace. "It's a cushioning charm. I got it for Christmas."

Merlin shrugged at the comment; he didn't really care if his personal beliefs matched up with his school house (although the hat had barely perched over him before sorting him into Gryffindor), they'd been his beliefs before he'd even heard of Hogwarts.

He tilted his head at the necklace, finding it nice enough but not knowing what it had to do with the situation until Alfie elaborated. "Oh... that's nice." he commented. "So I guess you are okay then."

"It's sodding brilliant, is what it is!" Alfie said with a laugh. "I can fall off my broom and never get hurt." And he sounded unbearably proud saying it - Julien really was brilliant.

Merlin nodded, eyeing the charm. "Mhm, assuming that it holds for that long." he agreed. He wasn't an expert on charms but he was good at hazard spotting. Not that he'd meant to burst Alfie's bubble or anything like that. "But I'm sure it's been tested rigorously anyway, right."

Alfie blinked. Held? He hadn't even thought of that. "Oh," he said, then he shrugged, "Well, the person who charmed it is brilliant, so I'm sure it will."

"Oh? Who charmed it, do they do other stuff?" Merlin asked, purely curious. There was a charm or two that he would have liked to get for himself. A charm to stop him getting himself into trouble would be worth it's weight in gold.

"I just thought I might see if they have anything interesting. Do they do stock items or like made to order or what?" the little Gryffindor asked, starting to shiver a little in the cold without really realising that he was.

Alfie thought about it, and it dawned on him too that Julien had mentioned once he needed money for things. Maybe he could make charms like this for others? "Well, it's another student. But I'll check and see if he wants to offer or something..."

"Oh... are you sure that's safe then?" Merlin asked, ever the pragmatist. Personally, he wouldn't feel safe tumbling out of the air and only relying on another student's homework to stop him from, at best, needing a trip to see Madam Pomfrey.

"I'm sure," Alfie said immediately, not even needing to pause to think about it. Julien was sodding brilliant, and he trusted his charms work as much as he trusted him.

Merlin was still sceptical, but he wasn't rude about it. "Okay, well, could you let me know what Charms he does? Or who he is for that matter?" he asked, shivering again as a wind blew across the pitch.

"Sure, after I talk to him," Alfie shrugged, tucking his own charm away under the collar of his sweater and picking up his broom. "I don't know if he'd want people to know, is all. So after I ask him."

Merlin nodded, accepting that as a good idea anyway. "Do you need a hand?" he asked as Alfie picked his broom up. Sure it was unlikely he would, but Merlin was one of those kids who'd always ask.

"Nah, mate, I was just going to try it again..." He paused though, thinking about the charm 'holding' and how he didn't want to wear it out, if that was even possible. "Maybe I'll go back inside, though. It's getting too cold."

For a second after hearing that, Merlin looked like a mother who'd just watched her son rail down a flight of stairs without safety gear before announcing he was going up to do it again.

It eased off when he heard Alfie say something sensible though. "I think that's probably the best idea." he offered.

"Oh..." he looked back towards the party and then back at Alfie. "I get claustrophobic and there were..." he sighed deeply, like the memory was making him feel breathless. "A lot of people in there. I needed to get some air, and then I saw you fall..."

"Yeah," Alfie scowled a little, but decided that the castle was the better way to go at least. "It sounded like a bit of a shit party anyway, honestly. But I might go in for some food now. There's always good food..."

Merlin shrugged at Alfie's very voiced opinion of the party; he hadn't been enjoying it either. "There wasn't much left when I came out, but then they restock don't they... I don't know." he ended unhelpfully.
