Who: Hermione, Harry, Ron
What: Horcrux discussion, and destruction!
Where: Forest of Dean
When: Today
Rating/Warning: Some Violence, Language, and Danger

She couldn't believe it was that easy. There right in front of her in Dumbledore's notes. The next horcruxes. She knew what they were! Hermione stared at her journal in silent awe for at least five full minutes before she jumped up, tearing through the tent to find Harry.

"Harry!" She called, then pulled open the divider to his bedroom in the tent. "Harry! Get up! I've figured out the next two horcruxes! I know what they are!" Which, of course, didn't help them to destroy this one, but it put them one step further. Two steps, really. Two very large steps closer to what they needed to eventually do, which was destroy all of them. And, if they could talk together about what this might mean if she was right, then maybe Gryffindor's Sword would be the answer to this riddle, too.

Ron pushed himself stiffly to his feet, taking a wary step back from where the locket had landed. It had eyes, and it seemed as though they were locked on him. He found he couldn't turn his head, try as he might to look away from it.

All of a sudden it was more than eyes - as he stared into the depths of the locket he saw Hermione growing up out of it, wearing an expression he had never seen before, a cruel smile with brutally cold eyes. And although it was new, he could read it perfectly clearly: it confirmed all of his worst fears in a glance. He was an idiot, a fool they'd never needed - dead weight more often than not - and nothing, nothing compared to the boy he was presumptuous enough to call his best friend.

He could hear her speaking to him, as if from a distance. He didn't want to listen, but he knew what she was saying. He shouldn't have come back, shouldn't have bothered. He wasn't wanted. What good was he? What could he possibly offer that Hermione and Harry couldn't manage together?

Harry was beside her then, looking at him with nothing more than a faint sneer, his eyes glinting red behind his glasses. Ron knew Harry didn't hate him. He wasn't worth hating; he was pathetic, a hanger-on who had somehow failed to realize, over the span of seven years, that his only purpose lay in being fodder for mockery. Harry had tolerated him long enough to take what he could - his entire family preferred Harry, his own mother had admitted as much, his brothers openly favored him, his sister was Harry's without question. All the school felt the same way. And why wouldn't they? What had Ron ever done but tagged along in the shadow of the Boy Who Lived? How could he think he had anything to offer Harry Potter? Why had he come back at all?

Harry's image turned from him to slide its arm around Hermione's waist. Ron's shoulder sagged with the weight of the memory of why he'd left in the first place. Why had he come back?

Then Harry kissed her. Ron felt as though someone had dumped him in the water again. "Stop it," he muttered, his face flaring up as Hermione snickered at him, her arms twining around Harry's neck. Ron ran to the locket before he realized what he was doing, and stomped on it, shoving it clumsily down into the mud. Harry laughed. His hands were lost in Hermione's hair.

"Stop it!" Ron shouted, falling to his knees to grab the locket off the ground - but it was white-hot, and he drew his hand back with a yelp. He looked around desperately for something, as Hermione slipped her hands down Harry's shoulders, her eyes shut to Ron. He found a rock, and slammed it down on the locket's open face. It only brightened. Harry and Hermione seemed to grow stronger, and more opaque. Ron stood, and turned to run away - but there they were reflected in the water of the lake, together, more than content to forget him. He saw Hermione's lips twitch up into a much warmer smile than she had given him when Harry's lips trailed down to her throat.

"Stop it!" he screamed, his voice cracking in his throat. The sword caught his eye; in a rage, he bent down to grab it, tripping over something soft and cold that felt like a body. He caught himself on the ground, seized the sword's handle, and brought it crashing down onto the locket's jeering eyes.

There was a faint scream, and a smell like burning flesh. Harry and Hermione disappeared into the darkness. Ron stood with the sword clutched in his hands, his shoulders heaving. Then he looked down at the shattered, smoking locket, and saw Harry, half frozen and still, covered in muddy water. He let the sword drop, and knelt down again to shake Harry's shoulder, his mind still reeling.

"Harry." He put his arm around him and hauled him up off the ground, stopping only to gather up the broken locket. Where's the tent? The sense of urgency that had been with him since he had left Hogwarts was fading, and when Ron realized what he had just destroyed, it went away entirely, and his load felt much lighter. He started dragging his friend away from the lake, trusting that he would find the right direction, even though he felt half out of his wits.

Hermione had been in the tent. Once Harry had left for the lake, her anger had frustration had almost faded - it often did with the horcrux was taken that far away. She'd been going over the runes again. She knew she was right.

Then something startled her - a scream. It sounded like voices in the woods though she couldn't hear what they were saying, and she grabbed her wand and took off in a dead run toward the lake. Toward Harry. God, why had she let him go alone? Why did they ever let him out of their sight. She turned a corner on the snowy forested path and stopped in her tracks.

Ron.

Ron? She couldn't seem to speak for a moment, sure her heart wasn't even beating.

Finally, she realized that she was right. It was Ron. And he was carrying... oh gods, was that Harry?

"Ron!" She cried, alarmed, scared, and there was something of relief in there too, at seeing him, and she couldn't put a name on why when obviously something had happened.

Ron stopped, his breath catching in his chest when he heard someone running towards them. He only had a moment to feel like a complete idiot for leaving his wand tucked into his pocket and inaccessible before Hermione appeared in front of him, looking very much like herself.

"Hermione." He sounded relieved and utterly exhausted. He felt Harry slipping out of his arms, and tightened his grip on him. "Help, he's - he jumped in the - fell - he was in the lake, and he's bloody freezing." He couldn't even begin to get out a coherent sentence. He didn't want to stop looking at her. It would have been nice, he thought absently, to make sure she was real.

"Oh god," Hermione said, and she moved in to help Ron, pulling Harry up so that they were both supporting him. And she didn't want to risk a levitation spell, but Harry was soaked through. With both of them, though, they could manage him.

"Let's get him back to the tent, it's warm there, we can dry him off." And she was still looking sidelong at Ron. He was really there. And he was helping.

And it took her a long minute to even realize what it was that was missing - the twisting, pulling bitterness that had been between them for months.

"Ron.." She asked, breathless as they walked. "The horcrux....."

Ron nodded, straightening a little as Hermione took some of Harry's weight. The thought of a warm, dry tent was just as appealing now as it would have been if he'd been out here for weeks. He felt like it had been ages since he'd returned. Still, he had to keep forcing down the smile that threatened to break over his face when he glanced down at her and found her looking back up at him.

"It's - dead," he said, feeling that broken was the wrong word. Whatever had been in that thing had been alive, somehow. "I used the sword. Here." He dug awkwardly in his pocket with his free hand, and held it out to her. It was seared and scarred, and still smelled faintly of smoke. He'd left the sword lying by the lake, he realized. He would go fetch it later.

Hermione didn't quite believe it, couldn't really believe it. She took the pieces in her hand and looked at them, amazed.

"You..." She said, and then shook her head. "I don't... how?" Probably one of the first times Ron had really been able to make her speechless, without her being angry at him.

How was not something Ron wanted to elaborate on, at all. "I just ... stabbed it," he said with a shrug, looking down at the ground and stepping very carefully over the snow-covered tree roots. "And it sort of screamed a little, and then it was gone. It was weird." He felt an absurd urge to change the subject. But that didn't seem likely to work. "Was that what he was trying to do?" he asked, watching her. "Was that why he had the sword out with him? What the hell was he doing jumping in the water?"

"No," Hermione shook her head, and they were almost to the tent now, so she sped her steps a little. "No, I told him... it doesn't matter. He'd tried stabbing it with the sword, though, before. It didn't do anything... He couldn't even get it opened."

Ron was silent for a few moments as they walked on, thinking. How had it opened? Dragging Harry up out of the lake was a blur. He'd been fighting to take the locket off, and then ...

"He said something to it." Ron remembered his mouth moving; everything else was lost in the very unpleasant haze that had followed. "I don't know what. Ask him when he's come round, I guess." He was short of breath by the time they reached the tent, still soaked and shivering like mad. "I brought food," he said as he started towards Harry's bed.

"Oh, good." Hermione said, pulling the curtained doors out of the way of Harry's room and helping him to lay Harry down. "Can you find something to use as towels or... He looks bad off. Maybe I should risk a drying charm and get him warm?"

"Whatever's fastest," Ron said with a nod, standing again when Harry had been properly laid out. "That water was cold as anything. - I'll do it." He pulled out his wand, still a little leery of having Hermione lingering over Harry. He knew it was a stupid way to feel, and it was nowhere near as bad as it had been when the Horcrux had still been with them - but there it was. "He's gotten you all wet, too, you ought to go dry off."

Hermione bit her lip, obviously unsure. Magic at all wasn't a good idea when she was sure they were being traced. But she knew her wand was being, from the close call the other day. Ron's... who knew?

She stood up slowly, nodding. "Okay. Dry him up, I guess, and warm him up. But let's not wake him yet? We can let him sleep. I don't think he's slept well in months."

"Alright," Ron replied, trying to look more certain than he felt as he leaned over Harry. He was suddenly feeling very, very tied - and was only mostly sure he could manage a decent drying charm without setting him on fire. … But Harry was soaked through, after all. It would probably be fine. And Hermione didn't want him woken up, so fire was out of the question; that settled it.

"Hold on, mate," he muttered, relaxing as best he could as he flicked the wand over his back. He watched with relief as Harry's clothes seemed to lighten and his hair sprang away from his face. Off to a good start, then. Ron pulled the blankets up over him from the foot of the bed. He watched him a moment - he still couldn't believe he was here, and the vile thing was gone - and then slipped out of his section of the tent into the common area. Most of all, he didn't know what on earth he was supposed to say to Hermione. "I left the sword down by the lake," he said, eyes on the ground, as he dried his own shoes. "I'll go get it now."

Hermione had disappeared to change, too. And she'd dug out some clothes that Ron had left that were warm, and was curled up in her own pajamas on the short couch that sat in the common area of the tent.

"Okay," She said, watching him. "Is Harry....?"

"He's asleep," he said with a nod, his fingers tightening a little around his wand. "Dry. He'll be alright."

He ought to have turned and gone out to the lakeside again. Instead, he found himself fixed to the spot, his gaze traveling between her and the pile of clothes she'd set out for him. He reached up to rub a little nervously at his temple. "... How're you?"

"Me?" Hermione sounded surprised that he asked, really. She wasn't the one who'd just destroyed the horcrux... everything she'd done had been useless, really. And Ron... she really couldn't believe it, but it had happened, and she so bloody proud of him.

"I missed you," She said instead of any of that, then blushed and looked down at her knees. "You should... go and get the sword. We'll need it."

Ron felt like he'd spent the whole night losing his breath - he had to remind himself to inhale. I missed you. He was flooded with relief, and the last lingering images of the ghosts on the lake's shore left him, for now. "Yeah," he said, feeling a bit light-headed. "Right. - Be right back."

He left the tent, and started towards the lake. Within thirty seconds he was sprinting. He skidded across the mud, grabbed the hilt, and flew back to the tent's door as fast as his legs could carry him. The ten seconds he spent steadying his breathing outside didn't do very much good. He made a cursory attempt at straightening his hair, stepped inside, and set the sword carefully on the table. He cleared his throat, gave her an uncertain little smile, and went to change, hopefully before she could notice he'd half-soaked himself again. When he returned he took a seat on the other end of the couch, and discovered that he hadn't thought of anything to say to her in the meantime. Perfect.

"Well ... one down," he said, smiling at her a little weakly.

"One down," She echoed, and a moment later anyone would have thought she was apparating, because she'd moved so quickly to the other end of the couch that she was just a blur - throwing her arms tight around his neck, and to do that she really had to be halfway in his lap. She didn't care.

"Oh, Ron." She sighed it, against his shoulder, and she'd think herself ridiculous tomorrow, but for now the digging bitterness of the horcrux was gone. Gone! And Ron had come back. And Harry was alright. And she was just so damned relieved for all of it.

She'd almost forgotten what being happy felt like.

Ron gave a start - he didn't know what he had expected, but - not this. The shock of having her close to him again, really close, an undeniable weight and warmth against his legs and his chest, was too good to be true. He wound his arms tightly around her ribs without a second thought, pressed his lips against her hair and breathed in. He hadn't realized how many things he'd missed about being here - about her.

The thought of apologizing seemed wrong. He didn't want to talk about leaving, or about what he'd felt while he was away. He couldn't imagine she did, either. "Glad I found you," he murmured, hoping it would do, for now. "Glad you're alright. - Both of you."

"You too," She said, and she wasn't really aware of how worried she'd been about him - all of Ginny's notes, and the articles - until the horcrux was gone, now, and she could finally feel other things again.

She hugged him tighter, not even caring that that meant she was pressing herself even closer against him. "Thank you," She heard herself saying, and that didn't embarrass her either.

Harry's shocky, too-cold unconsciousness had given way to a normal sort of sleep, and he fluttered awake in time to see the two of them plastered against each other. "Right, so you want me to leave?" he asked, voice coming out a bit wobbly and croaking, but recognizably his.

Harry swung his legs to the side, sitting up and rubbing absently at his neck. His throat ached from being choked and his head felt a bit like a herd of hippogryffs had tromped over it. But he felt lighter than he had in weeks, like he could think clearly and not feel like he wanted to punch anyone. He gave Ron a sheepish sort of grin. "Good timing," he told the redhead.

He remembered, in a slightly fuzzy way, what Ron had seen before, when the locket opened. "Hermione and me are just friends. She's like my sister," he blurted gracelessly.

There was a stupid grin creeping its way across Ron's face that was impossible to tamp down, try as he might. He knew very well he didn't deserve Hermione's thanks, but it was easy to forget, now. He was about to tug her onto his lap when Harry's voice cut into the haze that was steadily building up in his mind - he turned his head sharply to look at him, almost like he'd forgotten he was there.

"Yeah," he said, his smile only fading slightly. "Yeah, great timing." Fucking fantastic timing, Harry. Thanks.

He glanced back at Hermione, feeling his face start to burn again. "I know," he said, a bit too quickly, as though he had no idea what Harry was going on about. But it hung awkwardly in the silence. "Good," he added feebly, before clearing his throat and letting go of Hermione to rub at his temple again.

Hermione had at least enough sense to let go of Ron as Harry startled her out of whatever overpowering rush of emotions she'd been stuck in. She... she would have done just about anything with Ron, just then, she realized. And it was a shock that she didn't feel completely ashamed of the idea.

She moved away from him, though, just sitting between him and Harry on the sofa as Harry talked. Except...

"Of course we're just friends..." She said slowly, then she turned to look at Ron almost accusing. "What did you say to him?"

Harry was grinning, feeling lighter without the damn locket hanging over them. And more than a little amused by his own timing. He thought he probably SHOULD leave, which was awkward, but it was kind of hard to not just think it was funny right now. He'd just about died of a sodding NECKLACE, but he felt better than he had in a month.

He cleared his throat. "He didn't say anything. It was just. . . the locket. It was weird when it died. Don't worry about it. I just. . . wanted to make sure he knew," he offered, trying to cover and not being very clever about it.

"I didn't say anything," Ron reiterated immediately, looking to Hermione with the most sincere expression he could muster. "He must have knocked his head harder than I thought when he fainted. He should probably go back to bed."

He had a feeling that was hopeless, though. And in truth, he doubted if he could really pick up where he'd left off, now that he'd remembered Harry was here. - And he wanted to catch up with him, of course. "But if you're hungry, there's scones," he said, trying not to sound too grudging. "Mum made them. They're probably stale."
