Who: Alfie and Hannah
What: Scene Lottery - While out on the grounds, you hear a mysterious crying coming from the Forbidden Forest, sounding as if someone is in pain. If you look, nothing can be found.
Where: Hogwarts grounds, between the CoMC paddocks and the Forest
When: Tonight after dinner
Warnings: TBA

Care of Magical Creatures was easily Alfie's favorite class, just edging out Herbology. They were the only classes he actually made a real attempt in, ever, and they were conicidentally the only classes where he could get dirty and run about a little and actually feel like he was doing something other than just reading and repeating.

It was starting to get a little chilly, so he'd volunteered during class to go down and check the paddocks and make sure none of the water had frozen and that the warming charms were still up in the places that they needed to be. He was trudging around to check them one more time when he saw someone else out on the grounds and waved. "Hey!" It didn't matter that he couldn't quite recognize who she was - as long as it wasn't Malfoy or something, he'd be the same sort of friendly with anyone.

Hannah had a fairly hefty assignment to complete for Astrology and it was one of her worst subjects. She had spent a good half hour up at the Astronomy tower trying to chart the stars in four of "her favourite constellations" - according to Sinistra - but couldn't for the life of her get them right. She'd checked out a few books at the library and found that both sage and mallowsweet helped to refine stargazing, so of course she was going to try it.

Grabbing a scarf, coat, and mittens she hurried out onto the grounds to get a bit of each of the plants listed in her book from the Herbology greenhouses. It was cold out now and she loved it. Fall and winter were her two favourite seasons, mostly because it gave you an excuse to drink apple cider and not look funny. With her hands jammed in her pockets she walked briskly across the lawn. Not expecting anyone to be shouting at her she jumped at the sound of a voice and stopped walking.

Looking over her shoulder she couldn't see anyone behind her, but just to her left there was another student. She hadn't recognized the voice - as they'd only said "Hey!" - but it was obvious it was a boy. Shrugging further into her coat she lifted a hand in greeting, "Hello!" She was unsure of how to ask who it was without sounding like a complete dolt. After a few moments of contemplation she decided it was impossible so went all in and decided she didn't care. At least not too much. "It's Hannah Abbott, who are you?" she called across the lawn, making her way toward him.

He grinned wide when she called out her name, and started loping toward her across the quickly darkening grounds. "It's Alfie! Hey, Hannah." He didn't know the seventh form girl very well, about the same as he knew any of the seventh years, but Alfie was the friendly sort and she was a fellow Puff, anyway.

He was a little out of breath when he stopped next to her, but he was still grinning wide. "Hey - " he said again, then laughed breathlessly, "Are you... coming to.... respell the paddocks.... too?"

Oh! Alfie. Good. She let out a little sigh of relief and continued toward him, her body a bit more relaxed. She didn't make it a habit to talk to Alfie every day, but she'd chatted with him a few times and he seemed like a nice bloke she was always sure to be cordial to him. He was also a Hufflepuff, they had to stick together right? Puffs got more grief than any of the other houses so they were always sure to support each other.

She smiled back at him once they met each other in the middle of the grassy area, her own breath a bit short. "Oh! Uhm," she paused, wondering if he'd think her silly for wanting to try sage and mallowsweet, "Yeah actually. Weird! I offered to check on them this afternoon in class. Did you as well?" She hoped that she was good enough at fibbing, though judging previous experiences she wasn't all that convincing. Maybe he'd disregard it. "Cold out isn't it? We should probably head over there," she suggested, starting toward the paddocks.

"I did. Professor Weasley didn't say anyone else was coming out. He must have forgot," Alfie didn't even come close to thinking that she might be less than honest, he always assumed people were telling the truth unless he had a reason not to - and Hannah was nice, and a girl, and a Puff, so he definitely assumed she was on the level.

"Are you cold? You want my jumper?" He started with her back across to the paddocks, shrugging and then reaching to pull his sweater off to offer it over. He was wearing a tee shirt underneath that he'd bought at the Brixton market last summer. It fit too tight and small now, but he didn't mind being cold, really.

"He must have, I'm sure he's got a lot on his mind lately. What with being a professor and all," she said nodding to herself, "I'm sure he's got a lot of students to keep track of." She hadn't the faintest idea of how to check on these paddocks and was hoping that Alfie would initiate the whole ordeal. She couldn't look like an idiot. Especially in front of a sixth year boy. Though, nice as he was, Hannah would never live it down.

Taken aback at his offer, she stopped walking for a moment. Realizing she'd paused she laughed to herself and picked up her pace again, "Sorry, uhm, are you sure? I mean, I wouldn't want you to be cold, Alfie." No one had ever offered her their coat before, it was sweet of him. "Thank you very much for offering though, I've got a jacket. I think maybe I'll be alright just this once. We girls really aren't as fragile as we make ourselves out to be," she laughed, her hands tucked inside her pockets.

Reaching the wooden building she took a sidelong glance at Alfie and acted like she was readjusting her scarf so that maybe he'd start "checking the paddocks", whatever that meant. "How's school going for you this year? Going well I hope?" she asked conversationally, offering him a smile.

Alfie frowned a little, because he thought it was probably bad form not to make her take the jumper. But he also had no idea how to make her take it, so he shrugged after a minute and pulled it back on himself.

"Well, actually I already finished most of it? There's just one section that needs warming charms set up again. Huh? School? Oh. It's fine." He shrugged again, grinning. "Not gotten kicked out yet." He'd even managed to get decent enough OWLs last year in the subjects he cared about... all both of them. "How about for you? You changed your hair, didn't you? I like it."

Hannah felt a bit bad about not taking it, but she really didn't want to have him be cold just so she could have another layer. She smiled over at him, "Thank you though, for offering, that's very sweet." Not many boys offered their coats these days, it was definitely chivalrous.

"Oh! I'm sorry I didn't get here earlier," she apologized, though inwardly laughed at herself for being such a fibber. She wondered if she could sneak off toward the forest after they were done..."Well that's good!" she laughed at his comment, "I haven't seen you during rounds, so I suppose you're doing a good job." Hannah grinned and looked down at her shoes. Alfie was funny, she should really talk to him more.

Caught completely off guard at his comment on her hair she looked up at him with a blank expression. "My hair?" she paused, "Oh. my hair! Yeah, I did, thanks Alfie." No one had really said anything about her changing her hair color, but she hadn't really noticed either. "Brown looks better I think," she said with a small smile. She wouldn't ever tell anyone the real reason why she'd done it, liking the color would have to be good enough.

"Yeah," Alfie pulled closed a paddock gate that he thought he'd closed before, and shrugged. Brown hair was like his sister's, which he always assumed was just more natural than other colours, somehow, when it came to girls, but he wasn't quite thick enough to say that.

"Well, I don't hang about to get caught by prefects or anything. If they were going to kick me out for anything it would be for my gra - " Suddenly he trailed off, looking in the direction of the forest.

He could have sworn he'd heard ... something. He wasn't sure what.

Hannah laughed, "Well my grades aren't that great either but--" she stopped short. Alfie had paused and was staring intently at the forest. Her brow furrowed. What was he looking at? "Are you alright Alfie?" she moved to look in the same direction.

Come to think of it she'd kind of heard something too, but she'd shrugged it off. "Did you hear something?" she asked. Her skin started to crawl and there were bumps on her arms. Subconsciously she moved closer to him, wondering what was going on. During these times? You couldn't be too sure...
