Who: Fergus and Rhydian
What: Best Friend Times
When: Tonight
Where: Pub in Dublin
Rating/Warning:

He wasn't sure what the name of the pub actually was - something like Shipwreck Paddy's or some other trash - but they'd found it once after a Quidditch match, and it had been a decent enough place with cheap pints and enough of a crowd to be entertaining. Fergus got there first, of course. Mostly because he had less of a way to travel to get there, and also because he'd been ready to go when he'd said he wanted a pint. He took up a stool at the bar, waiting for his best mate to show his face.

"I'll have to make do without the art, then. He'll be so disappointed." He laughed, at least half at the thought of Fergus contemplating a Rubens. "And I do, yes. Campbell. You met him, I know." Rhydian was clearly pleased with himself, although of course it hadn't exactly been his effort. "He plays for Montrose." That was clearly a plus.

Fergus was already making a face - playing for Montrose didn't help that. "That one? Mate, what the hell? You have nothing in common with that one..." He hadn't wanted to drink, or talk about his sex life.

"Opposites attract." There might have been a touch of insecurity there. He knew he didn't have much in common with Lennox at all, and suspected it would present some sort of problem before too long. He couldn't expect anyone but his best friend to put up with some of his less productive habits. "You know that."

"Aye, if by opposites you mean she likes chicken and you like beef..." Fergus took a drink, waving his hand dismissively. "Not if you mean, he doesn't like anything you like at all."

"He likes Quidditch ..." Rhydian trailed off almost before he'd begun, aware that this was as pointless an argument as he could possibly engage in. "I like him, anyhow." It was the same as it always was - at the beginning of any relationship or anything like it, he was infatuated with the idea of someone as much as he was with the actual man. "He's quiet. He's different. You can't be throwing punches all day. You don't go for girls who drink themselves blind and get in pub fights, do you?"

"Sure I do - you know any girls like that?" Not that he'd think of settling down with one. Then again, a woman who could drink him under the table would be pretty damned impressive. And if she could cook, too, she'd be a bit like his mum...

Rhydian sighed. Bell had drunk respectably with him, but he couldn't speak to her ability to embroil herself in pub fights. "No. I could go looking, but I'd probably end up in St. Mungo's. And so would you. Although if either of you survived the initial alcohol poisoning, I suppose you'd probably get on all right."

Fergus laughed that off, then shrugged. "Met a girl the other day. Mandy something? She drank sodding a sodding shandy, but she was fit."

Rhydian thought he remembered a Mandy, but couldn't put a face to her. Fit, though, apparently. "I'm not saying you should limit yourself to women who can match you drink for drink. That'd be inhuman. Fit's a good start." He drank, thinking he was probably wasting his breath, but that was nothing new. "What else? Did you actually talk to her?"

"Still, waste of good lager," Fergus laughed, then rolled his eyes at his mate. "Of course I talked to her. I don't have a problem talking to people I think are fit, Rhydian. Not the one who had to have his sister finding someone for him to shag."

"No, I mean - did you talk about something? What else do you know about her, aside from 'Mandy' and 'fit' and 'waste of lager'?" He was confident Fergus could come up with something or other. The bar was low.

"Hrm..." That was a stretch. Fit and a name were doing pretty well for him for someone he'd just met in a pub, but after a second he pointed his drink at Rhydian and said, "She owns a bookshop, or something."

"That sounds interesting," Rhydian said, although he thought it was probably a point against her in terms of compatibility with Fergus. There was always hope, though. "So - Mandy, fit, probably well-read, and with a head on her shoulders. You're doing well for yourself, assuming you know how to meet her again."

"Well, I'm sure she's got one of those journal things," he shrugged. In his mind, the only reason to keep writing in the damned thing was because so many fit girls had them. Not that he got the chance to talk to many...

"There you are, then. Excellent." He'd be happy with seeing Fergus pursue something that lasted longer than one night, although he expected that however long it was, it would end at the same point most of his other escapades did. "Just - you know. Be nice."

Fergus gave him a look that was more like a leer and said, "I'm always nice," In a way that would send most girls scrambling away from him for his being a pervert.

Rhydian burst out laughing, slamming his glass down on the bar entirely too hard. A few of the other patrons glanced up form their drinks and rolled their eyes before ignoring him again. "Well, you're always nice-looking," he said, matching him leer for awful leer. "But that's not the same thing."

"See, that's the problem. It's enough for me if the bird is good looking, it should work the same way. But, you're forgetting, I also have a cute dog - " Which had at least gotten him the phone numbers of some cute muggle girls on occasion.

"I'm not disagreeing with you on principle," Rhydian insisted, grinning fondly at him and mopping up some of his spilled beer with his coaster. "And I can't claim much expertise in the area, can I. But it doesn't seem to work both ways, mate. Now, if you were after blokes, your strategy would be pretty solid. You might not even need the dog. But you're playing a different game."

"That's all it takes with blokes, yeah?" Fergus pretended to be thinking about it for a second, then pulled a face and took a drink. "Not even if the shave was really damn close, mate."

"That's the larger part for most of them, I'm afraid. You'd fit right in." He smiled, wiping the back of his hand over his mouth. "Well, it's your loss. You'll have to play the cards you were dealt, and that's that. And that means being nice without looking like you're about to jump someone on her barstool."

"If you say so," Fergus had had limited success with his way of doing things, though, and he thought there probably was something to his mate's advice. He also knew he was young enough that he didn't have to take it quite yet.

Rhydian could hardly brag about his own success, of course. He was on the right track at the moment, he thought, but he'd hardly walked all of it. "Yeah, yeah," he said. "I can tell you're really taking it to heart. In any case, neither of us has anything to do tonight but sit around and - what's this place called? Shipwreck?"

"Oh, who the fuck knows? Paddy's Revenge or some rot. It's an Irish Pub, what more do you want?" Best pubs in the world, but clever names weren't what you came to them for. "Besides, why are you drinking with me, anyway, Quidditch player waiting in bed for you and all..."

"Nothing else. A refill, maybe." But beyond that, he wasn't picky. He nudged his glass forward. "And I guarantee you, he is not sitting around in bed waiting for me just at the moment." Or at all. ... Not that it wouldn't be nice. "So don't flatter yourself."

And now he was going to be thinking about that for the whole night, he was sure.
