Who: Katie Bell and Eddie Carmishael
When: Tuesday late afternoon
Where: outside one of the cafes at Diagon
What: bumping into each other.. literally
Rating: PG-13. I think. Katie's moody. She might curse a bit.
Open/Closed: Closed to them.

To say Katie was in a poor mood would be an understatement at the moment. One of her best mates was missing and it had her in a foul temper. Sodding Ministry couldn't get off their sodding arses and just find her. Maybe it wasn't fair to think like that, but she was upset and her rational brain wasn't exactly working very well.

She didn't know why she was bothering with the cafe. Her appetite was shit right now. She'd just finished dropping in on the twins' shop, though, and it was nearing dinnertime. She knew she needed to eat even if she didn't want to. Maybe she should have gone for a pub, though. Some hard liquor would have washed things down nicely. Or maybe just numbed all the worry an stress she was feeling. Either way, it would have been fantastic.

So engrossed in her thoughts, she didn't even see Eddie until she was right on top of him. Literally. In the sense that she'd knocked him over and found herself lying on him. "Er, sor-" she started awkwardly, but then she noticed who it was and her eyes went wide. "Eddie?" she asked incredulously. "Merlin, it's been... oh, sorry, right, I'll get off of you now..."

Eddie stood and rearranged his shirt and dusted himself off. "No harm done," he said, then continued, "Are you all right?" It really wasn't too big of a deal to him; if nothing else it had made his day a little more interesting, he supposed. Perhaps being knocked into by his ex-girlfriend wasn't the exact way he had planned for his day to go, but oh well.

"That's a loaded question..." Katie let out a nervous chuckle, trying to turn it into a joke, but the truth was that she was far from okay these days. She'd tried to keep herself distracted, but it wasn't easy and the worry over Alicia always came back, as did the frustration of not being able to do anything.

She didn't know why she's answered that way, though. It wasn't like she wanted to talk about it.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I meant only.. in regards to the fall." It took him a moment, but then he remembered that Katie and Alicia had always been close during school and supposed it was still no different. Of course she wouldn't be all right; her best friend was missing and there hadn't been any news about her at all.

"Let me buy you something to eat," Eddie suggested. There was no harm in the gesture, he thought, for he would have done the same for any old friend he had encountered, and it was only a gentlemanly thing to do.

"Right.. of course you did." Katie flushed uncharacteristically, because she hadn't meant to be so obvious and it wasn't like her to even hint at what was bothering her. She was off her game, though. She was terrified for her friend, terrified they wouldn't get her back this time.

"Alright," she agreed, managing a little half smile at Eddie's suggestion. It would be nice to catch up, she thought. She vaguely remembered being annoyed with him over something after the'd split up, but that was a lifetime ago and it hardly seemed important now, especially after everything.

"What would you like? And do not worry about price," Eddie said. They had split up years ago back in school, but that was forever ago and they had both grown and changed since then.

He wouldn't press her to talk about what was on her mind if she didn't want to, but he did want to know how she was doing, aside from the obvious. (And if you were to ask him, he would of course respond that she looked as good as ever.)

Katie nodded towards the face she'd been heading toward. "I was actually on my way in there before my complete inability to pay attention to my surroundings got in the way," she told him.

It would be nice to catch up, she thought. She flashed him a small smile as she started to walk toward the cafe in question, expected him to follow behind her.

Eddie followed her into the café, chuckling a bit as he responded, "It happens to the best of us, my dear." He'd slipped back into his usual way of speaking when around a girl without really noticing it, as this was something he had been doing for years and years and it was as natural as breathing was to him.

"You're playing Quidditch still, yes? For the Harpies?" He had read or heard about it somewhere, he supposed; he read the Prophet just about every day. "I remember you were fantastic in school."

Katie nodded as he questioned her. A faint blush might have appeared briefly on her cheeks when he complimented her and she murmured a thanks, grateful that the wind just happened to blow her hair over her face at that moment and hoping it hid the brief redness in her cheeks.

He wasn't exactly her lost true love, but Eddie was definitely still attractive. Not that she was thinking about that.

"What are you doing these days?" she asked him as they reached the door to the cafe.

"Ah, only same things I've always done," he replied. "Did some traveling in the States, met some people, broke some hearts." Of course he easily glossed over the messy details of why he'd left, but such was the case every time he was asked what he had been up to. "I've a flat over in Muggle London now, where I work at a hardware store. Quiet little life, and not nearly as exciting as that of a Quidditch superstar."

Like any gentleman, he leaned forward and pulled the door open, gesturing for Katie to entire first with his hand palm-up and pointed in the direction of inside. "My lady,"

Katie listened to him talk. It was nice to hear about what he'd been doing, even if he didn't say much. "I don't know. It sounds pretty interesting to me." She had no idea about any of the messy details, of course, but Katie couldn't begrudge anyone wanting to leave off the personal stuff. She wasn't really one to share such things, herself.

"It's pretty great, but really it's not all glamor. Lots of hard work, believe it or not." It was easier to talk about that than to talk about what was really going on in her life lately. Her best mate being missing, her mum constantly asking after her non-existent lovelife, sending her on a slew or horrible blind dates. She didn't exactly want to tell Eddie about any of that.

"Still a gentleman, I see," she observed with a grin as she moved ahead of him into the cafe.

Eddie chuckled; interesting was definitely one way to put the past few years. "I suppose you could put it that way." With a bit of a grin, he spoke again, this time in an almost-perfect American accent that he had picked up while he had been living on the west coast, "Some of my friends in California taught me a bit about surfing, although I think it's a bit too cold right now to demonstrate."

He shrugged and switched back to his regular accent, which, to him, sounded much smoother and suited him much better. He smiled at her. "I would wager a bet, though, that you outshine the rest of your teammates during practice, no?" His own love life was ... decent, he thought. It wasn't like he ever had trouble finding company when he wanted it. But it had been a while since he had been serious with a girl, and that was definitely something to keep to himself.

"Always," he said has he followed her inside and began scouting out a table for them. "Would you prefer a window seat?"

"Surfing?" Katie wrinkled her nose at his strange accent. That sounded really odd coming from.. anyone she knew, really. "Yeah, don't ever do that again," she teased him, shaking her head.

She might have almost blushed at his compliment, but instead she merely shook her head again. "Oh, you know Angelina has always been the star. I suppose I hold my own, though." Katie was possibly being a little too modest, but she'd never been one to have a large ego. Confident, yes, but not to an extreme.

She thought about it for a second before spotting a nice table that happened to be window-adjacent and pointed toward it. "That one looks pretty good," she decided out loud.

He laughed; he sometimes used the odd accent at work to dissuade pesky customers from talking to him, but otherwise, he didn't bother with it. "Don't worry, it is not a habit of mine..."

Eddie, on the other hand, had no problem being possessive of what was more likely than not an over-inflated ego. A man could think the world of himself, and he could do so without bragging about it to everyone else, he thought, for if he truly thought so highly of himself, it would only be his own opinion that mattered. He chuckled again, "You needn't be so modest, my lady; you could easily be the star, talented and wonderful though Miss Johnson may be."

He nodded and gestured for her to walk first towards the table she had chosen.

"No, it sounds interesting. I've never done it before..." Katie was slightly intrigued, honestly. She'd never really been anywhere outside of the UK. She supposed being in another country, learning to surf, all of that must have been really fun!

Of course she thought he was talking about that and not the face she'd made at his accent.

She smiled as he continued to compliment her. "You're still a flatterer, I see," she said as she walked toward the table she'd pointed at.

Realizing the confusion that had taken place, Eddie quickly caught up with the conversation and said, "I had many great times over there..." he trailed off, momentarily slipping out of focus as he thought back, but if you weren't looking straight at him when it happened then you wouldn't have noticed.

"I always have been, and I always will be," Eddie grinned. "Truly, the day when I stop speaking the truth about those around me will be the day that something terribly unusual happens... and we probably don't want that." Ah, you sly man, he thought to himself with a crooked smile, always able to sneak some flattery in there somewhere.
