During the feast, in the Great Hall - includes a choir performance and some other entertainment, dinner, and a lot of live bats.

Essery hadn't dressed up in an awfully long time, but there was something silly about the Halloween feast that made her want to show her students that school didn't always need to be so serious. Which is why she had shown up in costume (though what she was supposed to be was up for debate.)

As the choir finished performing, she stepped down from the stage that the Head Table area had been turned in to and congratulated all of them as they went down to join their classmates. They had been excellent - adequately creepy for the occasion. She couldn't have asked for more.

While she had fully intended to be in attendance for the entire feast, one thing at home had led to another and Fleur found herself dashing up the steps of the castle, rather more ruffled than she ever gave the impression of being. As she entered the Great Hall, it was the the sight of the choir dispersing. Luckily, it appeared she was not terribly late. Quickly spotting her vacant seat at the Head Table, Fleur smoothed the front of her dress and made her way to front of the hall.

The choir members were taking their time returning to their respective house tables, and in the midst of it all Fleur spotted Essery. She appeared to be wearing a very...unusual outfit. For a few moments, Fleur just stared at her, rather at a loss.

"Essery!" Fleur stepped aside as an overeager student shot by, yelling something to a friend already at the tables. "I though perhaps I was quite late." She was unable to keep a small frown from creasing her brow. "What an interesting outfit."

"Isn't it funny?" Essery definitely destroyed any fear that the outfit might create by smiling too wide for the odd hag she thought she looked like. "I'm not quite sure what the beak of a nose is meant to be. Maybe this is a avante-garde harpy?" She shrugged, grinning at the new professor who she hadn't really spoken too much save in passing. "Love your dress."

After the feast - students sent off to their dormitories at curfew, leaving faculty and staff to do as they please.

The corridors were emptying of the last straggling students when Severus returned to the castle. By the time he reached the Great Hall they had all disappeared, which made the prospect of staying for a little dinner much more appealing than it might otherwise have been. He would normally have gone to his quarters and eaten alone, feast or no feast - once the children had gone he felt no obligation to make any sort of appearance - but tonight he found he wasn't quite ready to shut himself in alone. He was still too agitated to settle in with a book, and while he had no real desire to socialize this was better than plunging in with his thoughts again.

He went to his seat at the table, sat down without any greeting, and helped himself to some of the remaining food. He hadn't exactly dressed for the occasion, although it was possible that a heavy traveling cloak and questionably Muggle attire could pass for costume with some people.

Essery didn't get the impression that he was in costume. She was near the doors, having just ushered out the last sleepy Hufflepuff and spending a few moments talking to the Head Girl about who would be taking down the decorations and seeing to the elves, she'd been about to leave herself... when he walked in.

For once, she thought he might not really be noticing what was about him, and she debated leaving anyway... but there was something about the way he was acting that was off. His staying past when he was required to seemed off, really. It made her ... worried. For no reason she could really put words too.

So a few minutes later she was sitting down at her Head of House place at his left, tapping the charmed talons of her fingernails beside his plate. "Take care of your business?" She asked, smiling warmly behind her hideous nose when he looked up.

He was distracted enough that he didn't realize who it was who was approaching him until she was right beside him - although that might have had more to do with the costume than his state of mind. The cold set of his shoulders softened considerably when she took her chair, and although he arched his eyebrow skeptically at her fingernails, he was half smiling when he looked up at her.

"I did, yes." He had mostly convinced himself. "I understand I missed a concert. Terribly sorry." It surprised him a little how glad he was to see her, given where he had just been. But it made him feel markedly relieved.

"The choir students will survive, I'm sure," she said, laughing and tapping her empty glass with a nail - it began to fill with water almost immediately while Essery was wondering if the bit of a sag to his shoulders when he looked at her was relaxation or something less positive.

"Unless you want them to serenade you later tonight? I'm sure I could find them and get them back out of bed?"

"I think I can probably wait until next year, thank you." He cut himself a piece of whatever was left that wasn't pie, and rested his chin in his hand, surveying the Hall. "Better not to subject them to the rest of the revelry. Did anyone else end up coming in ... costume?" he asked, generally indicating her outfit. He didn't see anyone else, but she did rather stand out. It was possible he was just distracted, again. "The nose is impressive," he deadpanned. He would know, after all.

"No, not that I saw.." She shrugged, it had been for her own fun. She couldn't care much that others had spent some time staring at the only professor in the spirit.

"Muggle costumes do something things right," She said, turning her head enough that he could see the black elastic that kept the nose in place, then she looked back at him again, looking him over. "I doubt anyone would have thought you'd come as a muggle..."

"They do. Very practical. And memorable, too - you'll have an act to follow next year." He found he wasn't as hungry as he thought he would be. He wondered why she had come to sit with him, but stopped himself when he realized that it didn't surprise him at all. He had almost come to expect it, and even when he hadn't been thinking to hope for it, he was glad for it.

He glanced down at his clothes, and snorted a little. "Yes, that might have drawn a few comments, had I come on time. I rather thought I could pass for either, actually. Traveling in mixed areas does present challenges."

"Well, the basic black at least doesn't turn many heads." Essery grinned at him again, then picked up her water to sip it. When she sat it down again, she wasn't really sure what to say. Why had she interrupted him eating? Mostly, she'd thought he looked.. upset. Or moreso than normal. It wasn't the sort of thing you could just ask - particularly not when the last time you'd spoken to someone, you'd embarrassed yourself ridiculously.

His smile had settled into as comfortable a place as it ever did, consistent even if it was faint. "And yet, you've managed - I suppose it's different when you have it in feathers." He was allowed to look a little more closely, he decided, since it was a costume, but kept it brief all the same. Was he being truly, incredibly stupid in letting himself entertain the thought that such a thing might even be possible? Less than an hour ago, he'd been berating himself for past cowardice, but it was always harder in the face of things, wasn't it.

"You should come by again, sometime," he said after a pause, trying to sound casual. Perhaps she would let him gloss over the fact that they'd parted ... oddly, the last time. "I'm getting out of practice."

Essery hadn't wanted to admit to herself that she was waiting for an invitation, but when it came she seemed to relax even more, obviously pleased. Relieved.

"I've missed playing, actually." Which wasn't what she'd missed, but she hadn't missed acting like an idiot, and missing chess at least avoided that. "Whenever you have a night free, you'll have to school me again."

"Find something you don't approve of?" She asked, taking in his expression with a chuckle before she sat down beside him and sat his plate down on the coffee table. The chicken salad and homemade buttered rolls seemed light, compared to a house elf feast. She tried to think that it was the thought of food that had her stomach twisting, not of sitting so close to him.

"Always," he said, looking up with a faint smile when she returned and letting the magazine fall shut. "The drivel they manage to stretch into an entire article - I suppose it's no different than any other magazine." Not that he read the popular wizarding ones, but he wasn't shy about disdaining them in any case.

He nudged her glass toward her, took his own in his hand, and seemed to hesitate a moment before drinking. "Thank you." The food didn't look like more than he could eat, even though he wasn't especially hungry. He would eat it, for a reason to stay if nothing else.

"No need. Though my mum would be thrilled for the thanks," She chuckled and picked up her glass, then frowned at it suddenly as she heard herself.

"Not that I can't cook, of course. I mean, it's a bit daft a woman in her.... at my age... having her mum owling her food. I can cook. " Why it was important he knew that, she had no idea, but it was.

"Can you." He was fighting a smirk, because it wouldn't have been polite, and for some reason he was worried about that at the moment. He let it go after a moment, though. "I know quite a few people rather older than you who can't, I'm sure. If there's no reason to learn, one doesn't bother." He wasn't talking only about himself, but he was a part of the subset. He put his glass down and set in on his plate, with what he hoped was a sufficient amount of enthusiasm. "And if there's a cook in the family, after all, they might as well be made use of."

"Well, I'm not a gourmet. I don't have the free time to learn..." She picked up her own plate, settling back enough to balance it on her lap. "But I wouldn't starve if left to myself with a full cupboard." She didn't know she could say the same for some professors who'd been cared for by the Hogwarts elves their entire lives... which made her wonder if he wasn't one of the helpless he'd mentioned.

"Some people say cooking's not very much different than Potions, but they're idiots." He was very good at only one of those things. "Survival is an admirable skill, even if you haven't time to turn it into a hobby. There were a few years I lived on take-away, but I've been lucky." He did actually admire self-sufficiency. It was the logical result of common sense and a fair measure of intelligence. "Did your mother teach you?" he asked after a moment, picking up his glass again, genuinely curious. Like with anything else he was interested in, the need for as much information as possible was threatening to overcome his usual reticence.

"A little," Essery shrugged, taking a few bites and then a sip of her wine. It was a good balancing act - she should have invited him in to eat at the kitchen, she realized too late. "And I picked things up. I'm an ... experimenter, I guess. I throw things together until the results are edible, most of the time."

Severus wasn't going to be complaining about the sofa, as awkward as it might have made eating. Being beside her this way was more important than convenience. It was an awkward, almost juvenile feeling, wanting to be close - and he recognized it now for what it was, and simply tried not to think about it too deeply. There was no crime in it. "Nothing wrong with experimenting, so long as nothing explodes." He was more of a recipe type of person, in general, but he'd done a little tinkering with spellcraft and such when he was a student, and he could forgive it. "Less dangerous in the kitchen than it might be in other places. But self-teaching is beyond most people, I think. Especially if they lack the fundamentals. I don't know that I could tell the difference between a saucepan and a ..." Well, a whatever. He shrugged, and drank.

"A...." She arched an eyebrow and smirked a little, though not cruelly. "A pot?" She laughed then, and it was more like a giggle, and took a few more bites before she sat her plate down. She'd finish the rest after her wine, maybe. The way her stomach was fluttering - yes, fluttering, like a sodding fifteen year old girl's....what was wrong with her? - food wasn't the best of all possible ideas.

"Well, at least the elves can take care of you. When you want something lighter, I'm usually well stocked here."
