WHO: Verity and Fred Weasley
WHAT: fightin'!
WHERE: Angelina's
WHEN: after this
WARNING/RATING/STATUS: fighting!!/PG13?/Ongoing

Verity paced the living room nervously, her stomach in knots. She didn't want to go through this again, didn't think she could bear living in a world like the one the Carrows had come from. Not with Charlie, and the new baby. The thought that Alicia might never meet her new child struck her and she swallowed a sob, knowing that it wouldn't help anything.

"Fred," she started, forcing herself to sit, in the hopes that it would calm her slightly. "What about Ron, did you get through to him?"

"Can't trace back from the journal charm," Fred said with a frown. He felt like that was his fault, suddenly. He and George had tried, when they'd done the new line of journals, just in case something like this happened - but every charm they'd tried to use to work in for it had backfired.

They'd caused a lot of book fires that summer while they were trying.

"He's being so obvious, though! It's like he almost wants to get caught! Are they even trying?" She sensed Fred's frown, tipping her head back and matching it with a frown of her own as she gave his hand a squeeze, hoping to at least make him feel slightly better, even if she knew it was a lost cause at this point.

"They're trying, we're trying..." Fred groaned in frustration, squeezing her hand back, then standing up suddenly. "Alright, it's a long sodding list about who could do this. Carrow couldn't have taken her himself, though. As much as he hurt her last time, she'd have ... she'd have died before she let that happen, so it had to be someone else."

Letting out a little noise at the loss of contact, Verity folded her hands in her lap. "He could've disguised himself?" she offered, although it didn't help much in finding Alicia. "Or surprised her? Who would help a Carrow?"

"Oh a lot of people. We couldn't catch everyone." Fred had one in particular who had stayed free on the mind, and he had been since he'd seen him with his wife outside his bloody shop.

"There are still death eaters free, and some that have been released. And Merlin knows how many Snatchers we couldn't prove anything about."

"But surely even they know that the Carrows are completely mad," she knew that when she'd mentioned Amycus to Trevor, her cousin hadn't been keen to get involved. And that was Trevor, who Fred was convinced was a great big evil Death Eater. "I'm sure even..." she cut herself off before she could say Trevor's name, certain it wouldn't go over well with her husband. "They don't want to get involved with the Carrows."

"They were happen enough to get involved with them before. Snatchers were recruited by death eaters, took money from them to work for them and the Ministry..." Fred shook his head. "Bastards like that would do anything."

Frowning, Verity furrowed her brows, reading between the lines of what Fred was saying, certain she was catching a second meaning to his words. "The Carrows are different. Everyone knows they're mad. Sna..." she couldn't even say the word, even though she knew that was what Trev had done, had been. "Those kind of people wouldn't just pick up with the Carrows again after all this time."

Fred tried not to laugh, he really did, but he snorted anyway, a hard sort of sound that definitely said he thought she was being daft about it. "They would if there was enough money in it for them, or something they wanted. Bastards, love. What wouldn't they do if someone offered them enough? If there was enough in it for them?" And there was one bastard that was front and centre in his mind.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Verity sat up straight, her mouth a thin line. "Say what you're thinking, why don't you?" she shot, glaring up at him. How dare he intimate that Trevor had something to do with this! "Why are you even bothering to beat around the bush? Just say it, Fred."

Fred's eyes flashed a bit, his face flushed, but he also knew hew as dealing with his pregnant wife - his easily upset pregnant wife - and he tried to tone it down.

"I am saying what I mean," he said through his teeth. "I think someone snatched her. Someone with experience. There are a lot of those still running about." It wasn't at all everything that he wanted to say.

"Someone with experience," Verity echoed, almost cruel in her mimicking of him. "You mean Trevor." She crossed one leg over the other, twisting around herself tightly. "Trevor wouldn't have done this, I know that."

"I didn't say that," Fred said. He'd thought it, but he hadn't said it. He wasn't that stupid. "I said someone who was a snatcher, someone willing to do anything to help themselves get something they want. It's not my bloody fault that your cousin fits that description. So do a lot of people."

"You didn't have to say it." Verity shot back. At this point, she didn't care who else was in the room, she knew what she'd seen. Trevor had saved her on Knockturn, he'd sat and listened to her, he'd gotten her home safely, hell he'd even hugged her! She'd seen how he looked at Gretchen, how he talked about her, he was obviously in love. Someone like that couldn't be evil like Fred thought. "I know you, Fred. And I know it wasn't Trevor, he would never do something like this, I know him!"

"Oh fucking hell..." Fred sounded frustrated, exasperated, and his voice rose a bit until he remembered that it was Verity, and he wasn't going yell. Yelling at his pregnant wife was not a good thing. Right.

Right.

"He did things like that before, Verity. Whether you want to believe it or not. He was Snatcher. He sold out muggleborns to the Death Eaters and the Ministry knowing full well that most of them would be killed. What isn't he capable of?"

"Maybe before," Verity conceded, even though she knew it wasn't just a maybe. "But not now. Fred, I've seen him, I've talked to him, he wouldn't. He's changed! There's loads he wouldn't do!"

"Right. Because that's what evil generally does. Change." On this, Fred was pretty intolerant, pretty closed-minded. He figured he'd had enough experience with evil bastards to justify it, though.

"He's in love, Fred. He's different!" Verity shook her head and pushed out of her chair, amazed at Fred's bullheadedness. Trevor was different, she was certain of it. "He and Gretchen have been together for like, seven years. How is that evil? He owns a sodding book shop, Fred. Evil people don't work at book shops!"
