WHO: Remus and Tonks
WHAT: Remus wants to comfort Tonks about the loss of Moody
WHEN: Just after the 7 Potters Battle
WHERE: The Burrow (at least to start)
RATING: PG-13?

Remus still couldn't believe it... Moody, Hagrid, and even little Hedwig.. gone. He paced back and forth for a bit, trying to clear his head as everyone at the Burrow made their assessment of their injuries and losses. After all was said and done though, Remus found himself staying slightly distanced from the main group as they comforted each other.

He wandered into the kitchen, fixed two mugs of tea, then quietly went in search of the one person he desperately wanted to talk to. However, he figured he was probably the last person she wanted to see after everything that had happened over the past few months. Remus sighed and gathered his Gryffindor courage, then went in search of Tonks.

"Brought you some tea," he murmured softly, offering the mug to her. "I'm so sorry about Alastor... I know you two were very close."

Moody was dead.

Even in her wildest dreams, Tonks had not imagined a world where Alastor Moody might be gone, taken out by Voldemort no less. As far as she was concerned, he had been practically invincible, and as she sat there halfway up the staircase running between the first and second floors of the Burrow, hidden away by the railing, she tried to acknowledge the reality of Moody being dead and converge it with the world as she knew it. It wasn't working.

She was in some form of shock, she was aware of that much, and she knew Moody would have told her to toughen up and stop being a little girl about his death, which made her ashamed of the tears that were running down her face without her consent. She was silent, staring blankly in front of her at a wall or a door or whatever that blurry shape happened to be.

When something obscured that blurry shape, she forced herself to bring her eyes back into focus, though her vision still swam with tears. She saw the mug and the hand connected to it first, and she gripped the handle with trembling fingers. As she looked to see the face connected to the hand with the mug of tea, her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Remus. The cause of the emptiness that had been inside of her, eating away at everything she was for the past year. Not anymore, or at least that feeling would be given a reprieve, replaced however temporarily by the aching guilt and loneliness from Moody's death that seemed to fill her chest and spread out across her body, making her feel as if she had been filled with lead. She'd thought there had been no worse feeling in the world than knowing Remus was out there somewhere, risking his life amongst the werewolves for what she thought was a hopeless mission. She'd been wrong.

Swallowing dryly, she blinked back tears and curled her cold fingers around the mug, absorbing its heat. "Thank you," she said in a tiny, miserable voice, the only response she could think of.

Remus stood there for a moment, struggling to decide what (if anything) to say next. He waved in place for a moment, uncertain if he should stay or if he should give Tonks her space. In the end though, he quietly sat down beside her and cupped his hands around his own mug.

"I never expected that we'd lose him," he said quietly. "Alastor thought the world of you. And he made certain that I knew his opinion of my actions this past year..."

Remus paused and sipped his tea, looking up from the floor to glanced over at her. "If you need anything..."

Tonks didn't know if he was going to stay or leave, and while part of her wanted both, she was too numb to have much of an opinion. She sipped her tea while barely realizing what she was doing, and the warm liquid was soothing. When he sat down beside her and spoke, she was still for several seconds, then as if it were nothing, she rested her head on his shoulder, a silent gesture of forgiveness.

It was another long moment before she said anything, and when she did, it was in a small voice, thick from her silent tears. "He would have hated me going to pieces like this, but I don't know how else to react."

She closed her eyes, still unable to stop herself from crying, but at least she wasn't making any noise.

Almost as if on reflex, Remus shifted his mug to one hand and wrapped an arm around Tonks' shoulders to comfort her. "He wouldn't have hated you, Dora. He might've told you to toughen up or that death is a part of war. But I don't think he'd ever begrudge someone for grieving over the loss of a loved one."

He rested his head against hers and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to keep himself together. "I'm sorry," Remus whispered to her. "I know it doesn't mean much, but I'm truly sorry... for everything."

She hated herself for going to pieces as she was, and that was enough to fuel her guilt. It was a fresh pain she wasn't used to yet, and it took time to adjust to loss, she knew that, but those thoughts didn't make anything any easier.

Still and silent for several long moments, Tonks tried to concentrate on her breathing and the feel of Remus's arm around her. Comfort. So many times she'd been the one to comfort him, or to attempt to do so, attempt to convince him he was worth his weight in gold. Even then she couldn't find it in herself to enjoy this small moment, surely one of the few she would ever get with him, because of the heaviness of grief inside of her. It wasn't fair that she should lose Moody and have this stark reminder of what she would never have all within the same hour, and something inside of her trembled as if it were about to explode.

"I should go," she whispered, but she made no move to stand. The Weasleys had enough to deal with without her hanging around, and she desperately wanted to find a blanket, crawl underneath it, and stay there for as long as she possibly could.

Remus nodded reluctantly, but made no move to pull away from her. He sat there in silence, wishing that this moment was happening under better circumstances. "Please don't leave," he finally whispered.

This was probably the worst time ever for this kind of conversation, but Remus didn't know if he would have another chance. And if there was one thing tonight had taught them all, it was that life was too short to delay the important things.

"I'm not going back to the pack. My cover there is blown and I just... I can't..." He sighed and closed his eyes for a moment to compose his thoughts. "You were right. About everything, Dora."

Tonks closed her eyes. It was the worst possible time for this conversation, but there was no good time, and better now than never. They had to have it eventually.

He wasn't going back to the pack. More beautiful words had never been spoken, of that Tonks was certain, but again she could not take the time to enjoy it. She tried, but she could not muster up the excitement she would have otherwise felt. Relief, yes, but not happiness. She did not relish being right.

"Maybe we should go someplace else," she said quietly, glancing toward the living room where others were gathered.

He followed her gaze and nodded quietly. She wants to talk... that's a good sign.

Remus removed his arm from around her shoulders, but reached out to gently take hold of her hand. Right now, just that little bit of physical contact was helping immensely to keep him from losing his nerve. "Probably a good idea. Where would you like to go?"

She froze when he removed his arm, but when he took her hand, her shoulders relaxed a little. The physical contact helped her immensely too.

"I don't know." Tonks hesitated. "My place?"

Remus called out to Molly to let her know that he and Tonks were leaving, just so no one would wonder where they'd disappeared to. He gently squeezed Tonks' hand, paused, then pulled her into a hug and apparated them both to her flat.

"Sorry... I probably should've asked before just apparating us both here."

It was jostling being Apparated without warning, but she trusted Remus and was too emotionally numb to have much of a reaction. Blinking a few times when they arrived in her flat, she then began to self-consciously tidy up, or at least make the gesture of doing so.

"It's fine," she said with her back toward him. She bent over the couch, clearing a spot for both of them. Days-old Daily Prophets and dirty plates were in the way, but once she'd banished those to their appropriate locations, she gestured for him to take a seat. She did as well, but it was several long moments before she said a word.

"I'm sorry. I'm not entirely sure what to say."

Remus paced back and forth before sitting beside her. He clasped his hands together and stared down at them, then finally said, "I think this time, it's me who needs to do the talking. I know I've put you through a lot while I was away on the mission for Dumbledore. And while I had my reasons for what I said and did, I was wrong."

He paused and looked over at her. "I still think you deserve someone better than me. But I'm tired of lying to myself. I'm tired of doing what I think is best, instead of doing what I feel is right. And while I know this is the worst possible time to be having this conversation, I don't waste any more time."

Tonks remained silent as he spoke, her hands also clasped together tightly. What was she supposed to say? He had been careless and brazen to go into the pack as he had, and she'd spent the past year worrying herself to death over him. As far as she knew, his venture hadn't produced results, and who had truly expected it to? The werewolves and Greyback had been aligned with Voldemort since the first war.

But Remus had believed, and she wasn't the sort to dash his hopes. She had never used it against him, and she wasn't about to start calling him wrong now.

"You did what you thought was right." Tentatively she reached out to set one of her hands over his. "And at great risk to yourself. You did nothing wrong. I only wish--" She stopped and sighed. "I wish it hadn't been so dangerous is all."

She kept her eyes firmly on the empty fireplace, not having the faintest idea of how to take what he was telling her. "I don't - what are you saying, exactly?"

"No, I did what Dumbledore wanted. He made it very clear that I was 'uniquely suited' for the mission and left very little room for debate. And it turned out to be a complete and utter waste of time," he said bitterly. "Not to mention being close to a suicide mission, had I been found out earlier."

Remus looked down at their hands, closed his eyes for a moment, then looked back at Tonks. "What I'm saying is that I'm sorry. I was a fool and if I could take it all back, I would. And if..."

He lightly brushed his thumb back and forth against her fingers and whispered, "And if you'll still have me, I want to make things right."

"Dumbledore is usually right. You had no way of knowing it would turn out to be a fruitless mission." Tonks had strangely mixed emotions hearing him talk about what he'd spent the past year of his life doing. On one hand, she was glad he realized just how dangerous it was. On the other, she felt a creeping sense of dread--what if he had been killed? Would he have thought it not to be worth it?

She cracked a tiny smile. "I've been telling you it was a suicide from day one. Shows how much you listen to me." It was as much of a sense of humor as she was able to show right then, but she was trying.

At his request, her breathing hitched and she didn't say anything for several seconds. Not because she was hesitant, but because she didn't know words strong enough to convey what she wanted to say. So instead, she said in an equally quiet voice, "Of course I will."

For a moment, he thought he'd heard her wrong. Remus' eyes widened in surprise and he was completely speechless. "Of course I will." Those four little words did wonders to erase the pain and frustration he'd felt for months.

Remus turned and wrapped his arms around Tonks, holding her close against him. He tenderly kissed the top of her head and grinned before replying, "I'll have to make it a point of listening to you more often."

Having his arms around her helped take away some of the heaviness of loss that filled her, and she sighed silently against his chest. Maybe it was the stress of the day, or maybe it was her need to be as close to him as she could be, but Tonks wanted more, so she raised her head and gave him a soft kiss.

"You'd better." Her second small smile was testimony to her attempt at a joke. "I don't see how we'll work it out otherwise."

"I promise," he murmured, leaning down to kiss her again. Remus sighed quietly and gently rubbed his hand up and down her back. He smiled and closed his eyes, resting his head against hers. "I've missed you, Dora. I've missed us."

Tonks felt a rush of warmth run through her, trying to invade the numbness, and to some extent, it managed. This would never be a good day, but at least there was a small bit of happiness to shine a light in the dark.

"I've missed you too, you great big arse," she said heavily, but with affection as she found his free hand and squeezed it. "Don't ever do that to me again, okay?"

"I won't, love. No more trying to make decisions for the both of us, unless I actually talk to you about it. I solemnly swear it," he joked, squeezing her hand back and smiling at her. "I want to do things right this time."

"There isn't any one right way to do things," she assured him, setting her head on his shoulder. "Just don't run off and get yourself killed, and I'll consider that enough."

She cast her gaze around the room. It felt strange allowing herself to have this moment of happiness when so much disaster had happened that day. "Are you hungry?" she said softly, not at all hungry herself, but it was only polite to ask.

Remus chuckled softly and kissed her temple. "Believe me, I have absolutely no intentions of getting killed. Especially now."

When she asked about something to eat, Remus shook his head. He didn't have much of an appetite after what had happened today during the battle. "Not really... I wouldn't mind some tea though, if you have any. Or I could make some for us?" he offered.
