Who: Oriel Summerby and Kevin Entwhistle.
when: September 30th. Evening.
Where: Restaurant --> Beyond.
What: Dinner and a movie. AKA a date maybe sorta kinda.
Rating: Low?
Status: Incomplete/closed.

Oriel had been filled with anticipation the whole week long as Thursday drew ever closer. The days ticking by slowly, the way that time always seemed to trudge along when ancitipation was in the air. As if that day would never come.

But of course it did come.

He spent Thursday working, of course, at the Quibbler offices, doing fact checking and research, some for himself and some for other people, senior writers and what not. Oriel was glad to be kept busy, because that made the day go all the faster, and he was pleased for that. Soon it was time to call it a day and he said goodbye to his co-workers and headed home.

Back in his flat he fed Tweak and Ralph and Fuzz and the budgies, and left food on the sill for his owl if he came by, and then cleaned up. He changed into a pair of skinny gray jeans and blue shirt, with a jacket and a scarf over top. Combing his hair and then he headed out.

He was meeting Kevin in a place in Muggle London, and so he Apparated to a place he knew would be empty and walked the rest of the way to the park where they were meeting. Tucking his hands into his coat pockets and lingering near the entrance of the park as he waited.

LotR? Finding Nemo? Uh.. what else was out in 2003? lol

"That's a really good one," Oriel agreed. Out of the purely animated features, Beauty and the Beast was probably his favourite. Although he liked the Lion King an awful lot as well. All the cute animals.

He crossed his fork and knife over his dish and then reached for his cider, and took a swallow, drinking down the rest. "I think there's a theatre a few blocks from here," he said.

Nemo! :)

The waitress came by and took care of their plates and glasses, leaving the bill behind. Kevin instinctively reached for it, examining the total before digging into his pocket and sliding a credit card into the folder.

"You'd think wizards would have invented something like a credit card," he said to Oriel offhandedly.

I <3 Finding Nemo so much

Oriel's fingers slipped out as well, and then curled back when Kevin took the bill. For a moment he wasn't sure what to do. It all went along with the is it a date or not thing.

"I can pay mine," he offered finally, because he couldn't not offer. He didn't expect Kevin to pay for him after all. And then, "It would be easier than having to carry galleons and sickles and knuts around in such quantities."

Their eyes met, Kevin searching for whether Oriel had interpreted this evening differently than he himself had.

"Only if you insist," Kevin said tentatively, slowly sliding the bill toward Oriel. He hesitated, not sure whether he should say outright he had planned on paying.

"Um," Oriel replied ineloquently, meeting Kevin's gaze and trying to figure him out just as much.

"I don't insist. I just don't want you to feel like you have to. That's all," he said. Did that mean that it was a date? It felt like a date. It had felt like a date all along, in a nice and comfortable sort of way.

"How about this then," Kevin offered, thinking quickly of how not to offend Oriel but maintain his chivalry. "I'll get the food, you get the movie?"

It seemed a fair exchange. After all, Kevin's experience at the whole who pays for what when both people have a Y chromosome thing was pretty limited.

Oriel's smile brightened up his face at that compromise. It worked, and it still made it seem date like. "Okay," he agreed.

And so Kevin paid the bill and Oriel slipped his coat on so they could leave the restaurant. His stomach felt well sated (although still with room for popcorn, because movie theatre popcorn was always a must) as they started to walk along to the theatre.

Kevin shuddered against the cold when they stepped out into the evening air. He was unready for winter, but winter was surely not going to wait for Kevin.

As they walked, he wondered about the nature of the evening. Oriel must have deduced this was a date by now, so what was the proper etiquette? Was this a "first" date, even though it was the third time he and Oriel had hung out? Were there still protocols on what activities were "acceptable" on particular dates?

Did Oriel give a damn about those rules?

Oriel didn't really think much of rules when it came to dating. Not that he had loads of dating experience, but really, he figured that what came naturally was what should be done.

They walked close together as they went along, and Oriel couldn't help stealing the odd glance over at Kevin. Along with the regular glances he stole to make sure Kevin's lips weren't moving, so he didn't accidently miss any words.

The theatre appeared before them soon enough, with a marquee that listed the names of the movies playing, some of which Oriel had heard of, and some he had not. Blue eyes scanned quizzically.

His lips pursed in a hidden excitement as he searched the marquee for an appropriate movie. Yes, that one would do quite nicely, Kevin suspected, as he settled on one in particular.

"Finding Nemo," he said with a subtle air of finality, turning to look at Oriel. It had to be Nemo, after their chatter of Disney movies long since past.

Oriel had, in his head, settled on the same movie - at least, that would have been his first choice - and another grin came as he looked at Kevin and read the same words off his lips.

"I agree," he said, and he lead the way into the theatre, joining the tickets line. He paid for both of their tickets when they got to the front, and passed one of them over to Kevin.

"Do you want popcorn, or something?"

"Milk Duds and Cherry Coke," he said automatically. It was movie food. Neither sugary treat tasted quite the same outside the movie theatre, and nothing else was quite as satisfying to Kevin on the inside, either. But movie fare was expensive, so Kevin thought he should at least offer to cover the concessions.

"You want some cash for that?" he asked, digging his hand in his pocket for his well-worn leather wallet.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

i've always wondered what a milk dud is exactly

Oriel waved his hand to wave away Kevin's money, and flashed him a shy smile. "I've got it," he said as he joined the line at the concessions stand, which thankfully wasn't too long.

When he got there, he ordered popcorn and Milk Duds and two cherry cokes, handing over money, and then passing over one of the cups and the box of candy when they came, since he only had two hands. And then stepped out of line so they could go into the theatre.

Caramel, covered in chocolate. Wicked bad for you, but I don't care. :)

After taking the proffered snacks, Kevin immediately took a sip of the soda and sighed. It had been too long since he had last been at a movie theatre, and since Cherry Coke was a movie-theatre-only beverage for him, it had been too long since he'd had that, too.

He followed Oriel to the screen line, and as they stepped into the darkened auditorium, he called Oriel's attention to himself and asked, "where d'you want to sit?" After all, such a decision was important - it might play into whether Kevin wanted to be bold or meek.

Oriel sucked a sip through his straw and smiled. Cherry coke wasn't something he had often - he tried to avoid pop, for the most part - but he really liked it. The sweetness and the slight bubbley fizziness that made his nose twitch just a little.

His head turned when they paused along the aisle, and he had to lean closer to make sure he could see what Kevin was saying. Darkness made that difficult. "Towards the back?" he suggested. "Do you want to grab a seat? I just need to-" He gestured towards one of the ushers. He needed to talk to them.

Smiling, he slipped over to them and explained that he was deaf. Thankfully, most movie theatres these days had closed captioning systems, and when the usher returned from one of the offices, he was given a flat panneled screan that he could attach to the back of the chair in front of him, to reflect back the closed captioning that came from the back of the theatre, below the projection room.

He went up the aisle to where Kevin was and slipped into the seat next to him, fastening the device over the back of the chair.

As the smaller boy attached what looked like a mirror to the seat in front of him, Kevin's eyebrows crinkled. He turned around to the back of the auditorium, curious what the mirror would show. He didn't see anything.

"What will that do?" he asked Oriel after he had settled in.

"It will reflect the closed captioning that's projected from the back of the theatre," Oriel explained with a smile. "The only way you can see it is with one of these." So no one else in the theatre would notice the words. But he'd be able to read along. Which was sort of necessary with a movie - especially an animated one!

He settled the popcorn bag in his lap, and tilted it in Kevin's direction. "Want some?"

Kevin nodded as Oriel explained, and as he was talking, he saw the closed-captioning system boot up and test itself. Interesting. Although Kevin was glad for his hearing right that moment; had he tried to read and watch a movie at once, he might go a little crazy.

"No. Ta, though," Kevin declined. "Gets stuck in my teeth," he added with a grin. He felt a flush of embarrassment, sitting there in a dark theatre next to Oriel. He couldn't pin down quite why, he hadn't done anything worthy of a blush.

Oriel studied his face (trying to be subtle about it) because he thought Kevin might be blushing - but it was hard to tell in the dim light of the theatre. So he just smiled and nodded, dipping his hand into the bag and pulling out some popcorn, tossing a few pieces into his mouth.

Something about movie theatre popcorn was just awesome. More awesome than popcorn made at home.

The theatre dimmed then and the screen list up, the preview playing. Oriel stole another look at Kevin, before hie eyes darted to the screen.

Haha, Oriel's adorable.

Minutes passed, with Kevin doing his standard "yeah, I'd see it", "nah, not interested", "maybe, but only if he's shirtless..."

That last one reminded Kevin about who was sitting next to him. He sneaked a look out his peripheral vision and saw Oriel smiling at the screen, eyes darting between the closed-captioning mirror and the picture above it. Kevin was definitely growing a thing for Oriel. He was a cute kid, a smart kid, and one who knew his way around the English language: each among Kevin's criteria for dating material.

He sank back in his chair, sighing briefly, and popped Milk Duds in his mouth at irregular intervals. As the bright and cheery fish swam through their troubles ("just keep swimming" - Kevin thought he was going to hear that a lot for the next several months), Kevin stole occasional looks over at Oriel, not wanting to distract him from the text beneath the screen.

Oriel barely even thought about what he was doing as his eyes darted between the closed captioning mirror and the screen. Ever since the former had been invented, he had used them at the theatre, and so it was second nature to him.

He watched the movie with a smile on his face, because it was really cute. And funny.

He did glance over at Kevin every so often, whenever there was a pause in the text. At one time, he caught Kevin looking his way and their eyes met, and Oriel looked happy and shy all at the same time.

Kevin, naturally, thought "shy" translated to "adorable". He thought about reaching out and clasping Oriel's hand, but he worried that it might be too soon, or that Oriel wasn't interested in that during the movie, or...or...

He tried to focus on the movie, and not on how close the armrest was. Little Nemo was thick in the heart of a conversation with a starfish and a scarred black-white-and-yellow fish named Gil. Seeing the plight of Nemo made Kevin a little homesick. He was definitely going to have to stop by and see his parents that weekend, just to give them a big hug.

Kevin wondered if Oriel had ever been to Manchester...

Oriel was positively delighted by the movie. It was just so cute and funny as well, and laughter danced in his eyes.

Eventually he had eaten his fill of popcorn and let his arm fall to rest on the armrest. Of course where Kevin's hand was as well, which Oriel instantly realized, when their arms touched, their hands touched, and Oriel felt something warm slip through him.

He wondered if he should pull his hand away, but he didn't. Didn't want to.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Heh, no worries, I had thought we were just leaving the rest to imagination.

Oh, uh, hi...

Kevin fought not to flinch - he hadn't expected Oriel to make the first "move". He casually, slowly, looked from the screen to their now-joined hands, willing his fidgety nature to calm down for the rest of the movie. It would be just like him to finally have a chance to touch Oriel...only for his jumpy nerves to get in the way.

It took some self-control not to look over at Oriel, too. Instead, Kevin looked down at the floor for a moment, smiling easily. On the screen, the fish's father had arrived at the dentist's office and it seemed like the end of the movie was near. What would follow, Kevin wondered.

When Kevin didn't pull his hand away... well, that was a really good thing in Oriel's mind. It made his stomach do that funny, fluttering thing and made him feel warm. And content.

And it was funny how a little thing like being hand in hand could be totally distracting. Oriel watched the movie as it played out, as Nemo escaped and saved the fish in the net and everything, but all he kept thinking was hands, hands, hands, hands.

When the movie ended, the sounds of Robbie William's version of Under the Sea playing as the credits went up, Oriel turned to look at Kevin. "Did you like it?" he asked.
