Who: Oriel Summerby and Kevin Entwhistle.
when: September 30th. Evening.
Where: Restaurant --> Beyond.
What: Dinner and a movie. AKA a date maybe sorta kinda.
Rating: Low?
Status: Incomplete/closed.

Oriel had been filled with anticipation the whole week long as Thursday drew ever closer. The days ticking by slowly, the way that time always seemed to trudge along when ancitipation was in the air. As if that day would never come.

But of course it did come.

He spent Thursday working, of course, at the Quibbler offices, doing fact checking and research, some for himself and some for other people, senior writers and what not. Oriel was glad to be kept busy, because that made the day go all the faster, and he was pleased for that. Soon it was time to call it a day and he said goodbye to his co-workers and headed home.

Back in his flat he fed Tweak and Ralph and Fuzz and the budgies, and left food on the sill for his owl if he came by, and then cleaned up. He changed into a pair of skinny gray jeans and blue shirt, with a jacket and a scarf over top. Combing his hair and then he headed out.

He was meeting Kevin in a place in Muggle London, and so he Apparated to a place he knew would be empty and walked the rest of the way to the park where they were meeting. Tucking his hands into his coat pockets and lingering near the entrance of the park as he waited.

Kevin nodded as Oriel explained, and as he was talking, he saw the closed-captioning system boot up and test itself. Interesting. Although Kevin was glad for his hearing right that moment; had he tried to read and watch a movie at once, he might go a little crazy.

"No. Ta, though," Kevin declined. "Gets stuck in my teeth," he added with a grin. He felt a flush of embarrassment, sitting there in a dark theatre next to Oriel. He couldn't pin down quite why, he hadn't done anything worthy of a blush.

Oriel studied his face (trying to be subtle about it) because he thought Kevin might be blushing - but it was hard to tell in the dim light of the theatre. So he just smiled and nodded, dipping his hand into the bag and pulling out some popcorn, tossing a few pieces into his mouth.

Something about movie theatre popcorn was just awesome. More awesome than popcorn made at home.

The theatre dimmed then and the screen list up, the preview playing. Oriel stole another look at Kevin, before hie eyes darted to the screen.

Haha, Oriel's adorable.

Minutes passed, with Kevin doing his standard "yeah, I'd see it", "nah, not interested", "maybe, but only if he's shirtless..."

That last one reminded Kevin about who was sitting next to him. He sneaked a look out his peripheral vision and saw Oriel smiling at the screen, eyes darting between the closed-captioning mirror and the picture above it. Kevin was definitely growing a thing for Oriel. He was a cute kid, a smart kid, and one who knew his way around the English language: each among Kevin's criteria for dating material.

He sank back in his chair, sighing briefly, and popped Milk Duds in his mouth at irregular intervals. As the bright and cheery fish swam through their troubles ("just keep swimming" - Kevin thought he was going to hear that a lot for the next several months), Kevin stole occasional looks over at Oriel, not wanting to distract him from the text beneath the screen.

Oriel barely even thought about what he was doing as his eyes darted between the closed captioning mirror and the screen. Ever since the former had been invented, he had used them at the theatre, and so it was second nature to him.

He watched the movie with a smile on his face, because it was really cute. And funny.

He did glance over at Kevin every so often, whenever there was a pause in the text. At one time, he caught Kevin looking his way and their eyes met, and Oriel looked happy and shy all at the same time.

Kevin, naturally, thought "shy" translated to "adorable". He thought about reaching out and clasping Oriel's hand, but he worried that it might be too soon, or that Oriel wasn't interested in that during the movie, or...or...

He tried to focus on the movie, and not on how close the armrest was. Little Nemo was thick in the heart of a conversation with a starfish and a scarred black-white-and-yellow fish named Gil. Seeing the plight of Nemo made Kevin a little homesick. He was definitely going to have to stop by and see his parents that weekend, just to give them a big hug.

Kevin wondered if Oriel had ever been to Manchester...

Oriel was positively delighted by the movie. It was just so cute and funny as well, and laughter danced in his eyes.

Eventually he had eaten his fill of popcorn and let his arm fall to rest on the armrest. Of course where Kevin's hand was as well, which Oriel instantly realized, when their arms touched, their hands touched, and Oriel felt something warm slip through him.

He wondered if he should pull his hand away, but he didn't. Didn't want to.

Heh, no worries, I had thought we were just leaving the rest to imagination.

Oh, uh, hi...

Kevin fought not to flinch - he hadn't expected Oriel to make the first "move". He casually, slowly, looked from the screen to their now-joined hands, willing his fidgety nature to calm down for the rest of the movie. It would be just like him to finally have a chance to touch Oriel...only for his jumpy nerves to get in the way.

It took some self-control not to look over at Oriel, too. Instead, Kevin looked down at the floor for a moment, smiling easily. On the screen, the fish's father had arrived at the dentist's office and it seemed like the end of the movie was near. What would follow, Kevin wondered.

When Kevin didn't pull his hand away... well, that was a really good thing in Oriel's mind. It made his stomach do that funny, fluttering thing and made him feel warm. And content.

And it was funny how a little thing like being hand in hand could be totally distracting. Oriel watched the movie as it played out, as Nemo escaped and saved the fish in the net and everything, but all he kept thinking was hands, hands, hands, hands.

When the movie ended, the sounds of Robbie William's version of Under the Sea playing as the credits went up, Oriel turned to look at Kevin. "Did you like it?" he asked.

"Yeah," Kevin smiled, hoping the darkness of the theatre concealed the blush that he was convinced betrayed him. "It was cute. I liked Dory," he added.

The theatre lights came up and Kevin reluctantly broke contact with Oriel to stretch his legs and arms, which were fighting spasm from holding still as long as he had.

"So...d'you want to go somewhere from here?"

Oriel had to watch his lips extra carefully to read the words in the dim light (they were nice lips, although he tried not to notice that).

"Dory was funny," he agreed as he got up, unattaching the LCD screen from the back of the chair so he could return it. He rolled his shoulders back a little bit.

He knew that he didn't want the night to end. Not yet. He was having fun, he liked Kevin's compay a lot. Liked Kevin, a lot. "Sure," he said with a nod, stepping out into the aisle and down, so he could pass the screen off to the usher. They left the theatre and Oriel waited until they were in the brightly lit hallway before asking, "Where did you want to go?"

After squinting a bit with the sudden assault of light, Kevin thought about what Ori (the nickname came unbidden to his mind) had said. He wasn't sure, really. It was getting a little late, and they'd already done drinks, so a bar wasn't really on the list.

"We could go back to my place...or yours," he added quickly when he thought about how that must have sounded. "Or anywhere, I don't mind," he hurried.

"Okay." Oriel replied quickly, almost as soon as the words were out of Kevin's mouth.

"Your place?" he added. Not that his place was out of the question - he didn't have roommates or anything (unless you counted his pets), but he found himself wondering what Kevin's place was like. What sort of flat Kevin lived in, how it was deocrated. What it would say about Kevin.

Kevin squirmed. His place wasn't really a mess, but it wasn't as neat as he would have preferred. He hadn't anticipated having company.

Despite his newfound butterflies, Kevin grinned.

"Sure," he said, and then thought about transportation. "I live in Manchester, d'you want to Apparate?"

"That would be easiest," Oriel agreed. Once they were outside the theatre, at least! Which didn't take long, and they walked along behind it, where it was quiet and dim and nobody was about.

Oriel reached for Kevin's hand then, so they would have a point of contact while Kevin apparated them to his flat.

As they approached a secluded area behind the theatre, Kevin quickly ran through what in his apartment he had that he might need when they arrived. He had some leftover pizza in the fridge, a few drinks, maybe some crisps. Not a whole lot, but enough.

The state of the parlor, as Kevin had taken to calling the room with the telly, was a little more uncertain. More often than not, when he arrived at home after a long day's fight with one Muggle official or another, he turned the telly on only as a noisemaker and didn't even pay much attention to the condition of the room. For all Kevin knew there would be dirty laundry strewn about the room.

No turning back now, though. Kevin wordlessly clasped Oriel's hand and turned on the spot.

With a *pop*, the two arrived in the entranceway to the flat, where Kevin shivered off the last of the autumn chill and shed his coat. He turned to help Oriel do the same, and struggled to make his "so this is my flat," sound more confident and less sheepish.

Oriel closed his eyes as he always did, out of habit, when Apparating. His stomach lurched, like it was caught on a hook, and his whole body was dizzy for a moment, equilibrium thrown, before he got it back.

When he opened his eyes they were in Kevin's flat. And even if ti was messy, it didn't bother him as all.

He smiled his thanks as Kevin helped him with his coat, and unwound his scarf as well before peeking further into the flat, and looking around, before turning to Kevin to declare, "It's nice, I like it."

Stuffing his hands in his pockets and smirking while rolling his eyes, Kevin chuckled, "sure." He glanced at the walls, which weren't empty but certainly weren't full. A matchday programme from a City/United tie here, a framed copy of his first MEN A1 byline there. Kevin deliberately kept the parlor and the entranceway bedecked with Muggle memorabilia.

Inside, though, he had his Hogwarts stuff. His bedroom was subtly themed in blue and grey: the grey carpet, the blue lamp. A simple Ravenclaw scarf hung from the wall, beneath a similar MCFC scarf that clashed in shades of blue. Papers littered the floor and desk, where Kevin's laptop sat, half-open, still shining light onto the chair.

"D'you want anything to eat or drink?" Kevin asked, a result of his manners training. "Have a seat, we can turn on the telly or whatever..."

"Sure," Oriel bobbed his head in a nod, before lifting a hand to push back his fringe that threatened to fall into his eyes. "Whatever you have is fine," he added, and he smiled before drifting further into the flat.

He went over to the sofa and settled himself onto it. Kevin's flat was comfortable, and he liked that. He was never too fond about places that were still and formal and unnaturally clean.

He drew his legs up to curl next to him on the sofa as he made himself comfortable.

Cranberry juice was what Kevin had the most of, so he poured a couple of glasses and set them on the coffee table in front of the sofa, collapsing into the cushions next to Oriel (as close as he dared).

After taking a long sip to relieve a sudden case of cottonmouth, he tucked one leg underneath himself on the sofa, turned to face Oriel, and asked, "so what do you want to do?"

Oriel was quite a fan of cranberry juice, as it turned out. He wrapped his fingers around the glass, cool from the liquid inside, and took a sip himself. He liked the slightly sweet tartness of cranberries.

"We could just.. talk," he said, and although his voice was the same flatness as always, there was something shy and slightly awkward in his face. Oriel found that he wanted to kiss Kevin, a lot. But wasn't sure how to go about expressing that.

A nervous smile flickered across Kevin's features. He always had been a mediocre liar. He could talk his way out of anything...on the phone. But he couldn't school his face not to give it away to save his life. He wanted not to talk, at least not for long.

"O-okay," he stammered, not entirely certain where the conversation would lead. "Been to Manchester before?" he asked, finding it reasonably safe ground.

Oriel was pretty much the same. He could lie with his voice because it always lacked tone, but his face - and his eyes were far too expressive for his own good.

"I have. A few times. My Mum has a friend who lives here, and we went to visit her when I was growing up. Have you always lived here?" He fingered the glass of juice in his hand as he shifted, angling his body so he was looking at Kevin.

"Just about," he said, fidgeting in place, finding it impossible to get comfortable when the tension in the room was palpable. "Up until Hogwarts, and then again once I left. I like it here," he said, half-heartedly gesturing to the world at-large.

He started to reach for the glass of juice, then changed his mind. It was an awkward motion from an increasingly awkward boy. Kevin caught a glance of a clock in the kitchen behind Oriel. It was near midnight by this point. Time was beginning to run a little low for either of them to make any sort of a move, but Kevin still dared not.

There was a moment that was very awkward. Oriel could feel it as well, and he looked away briefly, before his eyes darted back to Kevin, and his teeth slid over his lower lip in an unconscious gesture.

He knew there were a couple ways that this could go and one of them was that he could leave and that was that. And they could slide into the friend zone. Kevin would make a good friend, he thought. And maybe that was all Kevin wanted, Oriel couldn't be sure, although he didn't think so.

Or he could be bold. Which could end in embarrassement, but nothing ventured, right? He glanced down, and then up again, looking terribly shy. "I. I'd like to kiss you," he said, cheeks pinking at the words. "If that's alright."

Alright?

Although Kevin's mouth instantly went arid again and he involuntarily swallowed, his mind was crystal clear on one fact:

"Please," he whispered.

He felt himself scoot over closer to the smaller boy on the couch, so that their thighs touched. There was hardly any room between them now, and for all intents and purposes, it was now-or-never.
