WHO: Stephen Cornfoot and Stephanie Cornfoot Fawcett
WHAT: A sweet distraction.
WHEN: Evening on Friday.
WHERE: Stephanie's flat.
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Complete

Her days were spent painting murals, and her evenings were filled with wedding plans. It just seemed to work out that right when she actually decided to do something with her talent, something else came up...not that she was complaining. In fact, she’d been hard pressed to wipe the smile off of her face since Stephen had proposed. She went to Memorial every day to paint in Ellie’s day care, and she usually had a break to get some tea and see Stephen at Tea and Sympathy...and disappear off to the back room for a few minutes as well. But none of that could distract her right then. No, not when she was surveying stacks upon stacks of notes and pictures and pamphlets about weddings.

Her chocolate hair was a bit of a mess, smelling strongly of blueberries just how the both of them liked it, because she’d been running her hand through it incessantly as she poured over a book of flower arrangements. She alternated between worrying her lower lip with her teeth and pushing it out in a pout as she marked down a few different things that she thought she should keep in mind. She hadn’t even gotten close to thinking about food yet, even though she’d dreamt about wedding cakes the previous night from all of her talk about it with Zacharias. All of this on top of the fact that she was shopping for her dress the next day had her a bit wound up.

Planning had never been her strong suit. She didn’t like being tied down to ideas. But all she had to do was take a glance at the painting on her living room wall or look down at her hand to reassure herself that it was more than worth it. It wasn’t as if she was doing this all on her own. Maybe she needed to look away from it for a bit, but she wanted some ideas before she left it alone. Plus, she thought Stephen would probably be around soon if he came over that evening. And it was unlike that she’d get to focus on flowers after that.

She was still bent over pictures of flowers when she heard the door open. It didn't really surprise her, nor did she doubt who it was coming through. There were only a few people that could get past her wards and open the door without her having to answer. She had a few close friends that were always allowed entry...and then there was Stephen.

She still had a hand buried in her hair when she turned her head to grin at him, immediately distracted from the photos there. But she wasn't greeted with the sight that she had expected. Usually, her heart would flutter like hummingbirds wings...but seeing the lack of expression on his features sent her heart plummeting to her shoes.

For a moment she was frozen. What was she supposed to do? This was the first time since they had been engaged that she'd seen him without a smile. Slowly, she abandoned the table and circled around the couch to sit beside him. Her expression was concerned with no sign of her former grin ever having existed.

"Hey..." she very gently, almost hesitantly, caressed his cheek and guided his gaze to her own. The lack of smile, the tears...all of it made her feel like her heart was breaking, "What's wrong?" She had to know...after only a few moments, her mind was popping up with a thousand different scenarios.

He didn't want to force what he was feeling upon her and he might've even ventured over to Irving's but there was more comfort to be had by Stephanie than Irv. Not that Irv wasn't good at comforting his best friend but Irv wouldn't do what Stephanie dared to do now. He wouldn't touch his cheek gently, wouldn't sit so near that Stephen could feel the warmth of another body.

He shifted his gaze as Stephanie willed his face toward her. His hand lifted to cover her own and then pull it down to his thigh where he laced their fingers together. He couldn't seem to look her in the eye when he spoke.

"I read the cards for that pregnant woman that I.. the one I predicted to be having a boy, I saw... saw.." he voice cracked.

"I couldn't tell her.."

She was a bit reassured by the way that he took her hand. At least, she thought, this didn't seem to be about her. Sometimes she still thought it was too surreal, that she would wake up and it would be all over...and that was something that honestly terrified her. But it was real. He'd proven that to her many times over...his physical presence was a reminder.

At his words, she wanted nothing more than to just hold him and banish whatever it was that he'd seen, to make it not true. She remembered hearing about the pregnant woman, talking about it with him...but what was it now? Was there something wrong with the baby?

Stephanie didn't have kids, obviously, but she had thought about the possibility. And she couldn't imagine being a mother, being pregnant, and finding out that something was terribly wrong...no wonder he was upset. Stephen wasn't a harsh man by any stretch of the imagination.

She squeezed his hand reassuringly, the free one coming up to brush a feather light touch through his hair, leaning just a bit closer to him to add that extra comfort, "I remember her...what happened, love?" Her voice was soft...she wouldn't be angry if he chose not to answer her, but if it was so awful, wouldn't if feel better to share the burden?

"The baby isn't going to live more than a few months," he admitted, voice thick with emotion. This was part of the gift Grandma Esther so desperately tried to warn him about. And it wasn't that she was trying to warn him so as to ward him off from use of the gift, but merely to make sure he understood from a young age that not everything the inner eye saw was lovely.

He drew his knees up suddenly and made move to hug his legs tight to his chest. He buried his face against his knees and closed his eyes tight. His effort to wish away the vision was in vain. Eyes closed or open there it was: the brief and terrible vision of a child dying with nothing any healer could do.

"Do you know how to do an obliviation charm?" he asked, words muffled.

As soon as the words left his mouth, tears rapidly welled in her eyes. She felt her heart constrict tightly in her chest. That poor woman...she was going to go through something terrible...something that would change her for forever, "Then every moment spent with him will be precious to her," she said softly, refusing to keep imagining herself in that position. It was too painful. Her empathy ran too deep.

Stephanie felt lost. She didn't know what to do for Stephen, not when he took up the position that she herself was so familiar with. It always provided some measure of comfort. She shook her head softly at his request, although realizing he couldn't see, she spoke up, "No...but I wish I did." She'd probably end up erasing too much if she tried, and she wasn't willing to risk that.

"I'm sorry," she nearly whispered, though what she was apologizing for, she wasn't sure. Her lack of knowledge on the spell that might afford him some comfort, the fact that he'd seen it in the first place, that such a thing could happen to one so innocent...it was just something to say. Something that probably wouldn't really mean much...but it was hanging there in the air anyway.

She'd give anything to take pain away from him...she'd gladly take the full burden instead.

Godric, he didn't mean to make her feel all that he felt. But this was what it meant to be best companions with one another. Not everything shared between them was going to be light and fanciful. Stephen kept his head ducked down and stayed quiet while he allowed the vision to wash over him again and again.

Then, after a long pause, he lifted his head and peered at her over his bicep. Stephen lowered his knees and turned inward against her, cheek resting against her shoulder.

"Talk to me about something else. Anything else."

Relationships were a little give and a little take. She knew that not everything could always be happy. It had worked that way in friendship too, but they took the good and the bad in stride. There wasn't really any other way to do it.

When he turned towards her, she adjusted slightly, looping her arms around his shoulders, just keeping him close. For a moment, she pondered about what she could possibly say to keep his mind off of the vision. Their wedding and the murals were what consumed her time right now...it was all she'd been able to think about.

"I'm about half done with the fairy garden mural at Ellie's," she started, because he had said anything, "It's so intricate. But I'm glad that you talked me into doing it. I'll probably really start on the one with the dragons next week. And I've been looking at flowers for the bouquets and the reception. I don't entirely know which ones will work best, but there are some names jotted down. The invitations are coming together nicely too," she just rambled, knowing that this kind of talk probably seemed shallow in comparison to what they had been discussing, but maybe lighthearted was what he needed. And well...these were things that he'd be interested to know anyway.

She could've been speaking French and it wouldn't have mattered. Just her voice drowning out the sound of a crying mother was all he needed in that moment. As she spoke he adjusted the way he sat until he was simply laying down with his head upon her lap. His legs were hanging off the edge of the couch and his hands were taking one of hers and placing it upon his chest over his heart.

He had finally opened his eyes again and was gazing up at her as she spoke, drinking in the last of her words. Stephen smiled gently.

"Do you know what my favorite part of all of this is?"

The way they moved with one another was natural, not awkward. When he moved, she moved. It was simple as that. So when she found him with his head in her lap, her hand over his heart, she didn’t think much of it. She played with his hair a little bit with her free hand, reassured by the steady rhythm under her palm. She could spend forever just with him...not even speaking, just being.

At his question, she tilted her head a bit, happy that he seemed successfully distracted, that he had found something to be his ‘favorite.’ But she had no idea what it was and she wasn’t going to guess just then, “Hmmm...I haven’t a clue. What’s your favorite part?”

She hoped that he wouldn’t keep her in suspense. There were moments when she had her good guesses, but for the most part, she just left the Divination up to him. He was the one with the talent in that area.

Had he been in the mood to tease and joke he might've kept it to himself. Might not have said a word but would have smiled knowingly until she attacked him for want of information. As it was, Stephen was in no such mood. He was feeling far too serious to do anything but answer her directly.

"I can kiss you whenever I want," he supplied, speaking in such a tone that it seemed like his answer was quite obvious.

Stephen moves like water, fluid and swift. He sits up but still leans back and it's all kinds of awkward because his back is still sideways to her body when he tries to be romantic. A warm hand to the back of her neck urges her forward and his mouth is carefully placing pressure against her lips. The corner of his mouth upturns in a slight smile and he nips at her lower lip before settling back on her lap.

"Anytime I want," he sighs, much happier than he had been moments ago.

His words immediately brought a flush to her cheeks. Stephanie noticed that she had been blushing a lot more than normal lately, and that it was all his fault. She didn't mind the blushing, she supposed. It was just that it made her feel like a school girl.

Leaning forward, obedient to the pressure he applied to her neck, she melted into the kiss immediately. She realized then that feeling his smile is just as good as seeing it. She wanted to keep kissing him...especially after he stole her breath with that little nip. This little stolen moment reminds her just what she has to look forward to...of all the thousands of kisses he'll steal.

"You're cheesy and romantic," she decided with a bit of a grin, her eyes giving way to a bit of a sparkling amusement, "But I love it." She leaned back against the couch just a little bit, content with him there.

"I love you," she amended, the words carrying much more weight than they had when they were just friends. They, hopefully, told him everything he'd ever need to know.

"Am I?" he was smiling a sleepy sort of smile as if dazed by such a thought. The confession of her love made his gaze sharpen, his expression too. He looked dreadfully serious when he said it back, voice nothing more than a hoarse whisper.

"I love you too," he had lifted a hand to her cheek and was drawing his long fingers down across her small neck, thumb resting briefly over that unhurried pulse of hers. The serious expression softened and with his eyes focused on where his hand rested he continued to ask her questions, continued to distract himself.

"So..October 31st, evening... have you found your dress yet?"

The longer he left his hand there on her skin, the faster her heart seemed to beat. He could do crazy things to her. Crazy, wonderful things. She reminded herself that she better become a bit more resilient because they hadn't even gotten close to the things that were really going to make her forget herself yet.

She ran a finger absentmindedly along the edge where his shirt came together by his heart, tracing over a button.

"Not yet," she admitted, "Even though I've got a few ideas from some catalogs...Jolene is supposed to be going with me tomorrow to look. I've got a good feeling about it," she told him, a grin playing on her lips.

"On a scale of one to ten, with one being detest and ten being ecstatic, what's your reaction to the statement: I'm thinking about wearing converse to our wedding."

He didn't mean to be a complete heathen but this could not be helped. There hadn't really been any doubts in his mind about this engagement being the right idea but there had been tons and tons of these tiny moments where his decision was encouraged, where in his heart he knew he had made the best choice he could ever make.

This was one of those moments. Her idea was perfection, it was what he loved about her. She wasn't high-strung like some pureblood witches, wasn't caught up in certain vain ideals about what was proper and what wasn't. Stephanie Fawcett knew what she wanted and most of the time what she wanted was what he wanted as well.

Yes, he hadn't meant to act like an animal but his response was rather feral, wasn't it? He had sat up quick and scrambled to his knees so he could be in prime position to do what he wanted to do which was this:

To kiss her senseless, steal the breath out of her lungs and draw her against him hard. He broke the hard pressed kiss to hold her at arms length.

"You're so bloody amazing, that is the best idea I have ever heard!"

To say she was surprised might have been a bit of a mild understatement. One moment, she was perfectly relaxed, and so was he, and the next...her mind was spinning. His lips right there on hers sent her into a daze.

She was entirely present with feeling, but her mind couldn't be bothered. As tightly as he was holding her, she still didn't think she could get close enough. Sometimes she just wanted to say her morals could go down the drain.

Breathing definitely wasn't an option, not until he broke the kiss, which she rather immediately wanted to protest. No...she wanted him right back there with those lips that made her forget her own name.

She still smiled brilliantly, "I thought we knew that by now!" She gave a soft laugh, refusing to relinquish her hold on him, "Hmmm, I can wear blue ones. Not only will they fit in with the colour scheme, but the bride has to wear something blue."

"Do you want to wear converse to our wedding too?" she asked, her eyes happy, laughing. Hell, for all she cared, everyone in both of their parties could wear converse.

He gave her biceps a squeeze and widened his eyes.

"Yes, of course! Blue ones! And... what about the entire wedding party??"

He hoped that his genuine excitement would make her happy. Stephen was honestly very thrilled about the planning. He wanted to be involved in every way that wouldn't drive her mad.

He sank back on his haunches and glanced down to the floor where she had been working before.

"What's all of that, then?"

She grinned at his suggestion that had just been floating around in her mind and pitched forward to kiss him soundly again for just a few lingering moments, the smile never quite leaving her features. She would take any excuse she could get to kiss him again. And it happened to be a very good one.

"Absolutely! I bet that'll at least appease Irvy slightly. And it'll save my girls from having to walk around in heels all day. The only one I think that will be entirely disappointed is Jolene," but Stephanie didn't care. It was her wedding, and she'd do whatever she wanted.

She crinkled up her nose slightly when he mentioned what she'd been occupied with before, though she knew it a was necessary evil, "Flowers. Lots and lots of flowers. And what I've come up with for the invite is in there somewhere. Oh, and a few cakes as well, but I haven't even begun to really touch the surface of that one."

"Not sure how it'll tide over with Marcus but... he seems to be willing enough with everything so far. He's been a pretty good chap I must say, I thought he would say no, say he was too busy this season but... he surprised me," as did her sudden kiss. It left him smiling like silly.

All of her work seemed to be just that: work. He didn't have as much to do and felt bad for it. Stephen clapped his hands together and tilted his head.

"Right. So what can I do?"

At the mention of Marcus, she thought back on the conversation that she herself had with him not all that long ago...short as it was, it cleared up a lot of wondering she'd done in the past. But she remembered not to say anything to Stephen, just as he'd asked her to, so she just smiled instead.

Thinking about what he could help out with though...that was a little tricky. Because...well, what would he somewhat enjoy doing? They'd already picked his parent's place as their venue, which was nice because it didn't have a price tag attached. That was one less thing to put on the budget.

"Music," she said suddenly after thinking about it for a moment. While she liked music, Stephen was the one that really had the ear for it. He was the one that would be best suited for that job, "You can definitely find the people to play music. I'd just be at a loss."

Stephen waited with anticipation for what she'd grant him control over. Had she said there was nothing he would be fairly upset but he had high hopes that she'd find him something to do. After all, he wasn't like normal men who had a lack of interest or lack of ability to do wedding related tasks. He was smart, capable, could color coordinate like a true artist!

Then, she said it. The magic word. Stephen's smile was so wide his cheeks hurt.

"Music, perfect, I'll do that," he leaned forward, taking the moment to kiss her again. Though, this time, he didn't stop. His warm hands found her cheeks and gently guided her head back as he worked his jaw. His teeth grazed her lower lip and he moved closer to her.

To know that she made him smile like that, it was something she was truly proud of. One of her main goals in life was to make him happy like that every day for the rest of forever. He could make her just as happy without even really trying.

Then he was scrambling her thoughts again. She melted into him this time like putty in his hands. Was her will really so weak that he could displace the entire contents of her mind in the matter of a few seconds? Yes, yes it was.

A shiver ran down her spine, but she ignored it as she pulled herself closer to him, pulled them both back against the couch. She parted her lips to him, deepening this wonderful kiss. She tasted him...loving that lingering vanilla smoke and something else that was just...Stephen.

This was his favorite part. Okay, this was one of his favorite things. He also enjoyed other aspects of this new twist to their relationship but he would never get used to the fact that those lips were his to kiss. This body was his to touch, to hold close, to protect. How had he ever let the idea of another man touching her pass?

Come to think of it, anytime he had ever heard her speak of another man (which, wasn't too often really)he seemed to get a bit nosy fairly quick. Nosy and somewhat annoyed.

Stephen sighed against her mouth and let his tongue dance across her bottom lip as they sank down onto the couch. He was holding himself up over her with one arm, his other hand coming up rest on her hip just under the hem of her shirt.

"Why can't we just get married now," he murmured, lips trailing hot kisses across her jaw.

Some part of her had always known that this was how it was supposed to be. Everything else was always wrong. The fleeting thoughts that she'd had of them together had always made her blush, and...well, kissing anyone else just wasn't at all spectacular. Her mind wandered, analyzed...with Stephen, she forgot how to think and remembered only to feel.

His hand on her hip felt like it was burning a brand on her right through her jeans, but she didn't say a word about it. She liked it...wanted more. He always seemed to make her reconsider her resolve to wait...and to have their ceremony late October.

She pulled one leg up, her inner thigh brushing over his hip as she planted her foot there against the couch cushion. Her mind grasped at his words to understand them, to hold onto them long enough to answer before they turned to dust. But he made it so hard to think with those lips against her skin. He made it hard to keep her heart in her chest...it felt like it might be trying to escape, what with the quickness of it's rhythm.

"Because..." she gave a soft sigh, her breath almost catching, "...it's not Halloween yet." And that's what they had planned, right? It was a terribly weak excuse, but one of the best she could come up with at the moment. He made her feel totally kiss-drunk. He shouldn't stop...she never wanted this to stop.

Because, because, because! He groaned when she hitched a leg up and the hand holding him up shifted to make a fist. The other hand danced up under the shirt and settled hot against her ribcage, fingers itching to move further up. He had never been a guy needy for sex but.. he was still a guy.

He was working his mouth against her neck, tongue licking against her racing pulse. His teeth nipped at that tender flesh and then she said it. It wasn't Halloween yet.

Stephen's sigh was a hot plume of breath against her skin and he placed one last, chaste kiss to her neck before sitting up.

"Halloween... hmph."

Hearing that sound escape him made her heart pound that much more fiercely, especially as his hand explored her skin. Her muscles clenched under his touch, anticipating...wanting. Between his hand and his mouth, she felt like she might go crazy. He pulled an involuntary moan past her lips, and then...he stopped.

She felt instantly frustrated. A spiral of curses flitted through her mind but never made it past her lips. She pressed her hands to her face to keep out the blush and the sudden, stinging tears that automatically accompanied that frustration that could only really be blamed on herself.

It was becoming harder to resist him, harder to remind herself why they should wait. It was especially difficult when images flashed through her mind of bodies entwined, hands traveling over sensitive skin, breath huffing unevenly in the air, and Merlin...those sounds.

But this was her choice...and she had to stick by it. She dropped her hands with a sigh and forced herself to sit up, to scoot just a little bit away so she wasn't touching him quite so closely, "Flowers...I need to work on the flowers," she said more for herself than anything. She ran her hand again through that blueberry scented hair, and glanced at the stack of pictures, not really wanting to move. But now she was the one that needed the distraction from all of those thoughts that threatened to weaken her resolve.

He wants to be the kind of guy who is a man's man. A guy who will say 'fuck that' to the idea of not doing anything about the very obvious desires they both have.

But he's not that kind of guy. He's a nice guy, and so when she mentions flowers he simply leans forward to kiss her cheek before standing up.

"Sure thing, love. I need to get home and take a shower anyway... I'll catch up with you later?"

She smiles and looks up at him when he stood up, still trying to push back the feelings that had been swamping her a moment earlier. She doesn't really want to look at the flowers, but she will.

For a moment, she's drifting on the striking thought of him in the shower, but she pulls her mind out of that gutter, "Yeah, definitely," she says, giving a nod for good measure.

Within a few moments...she's alone again, and finds herself sitting there with the same pictures as before, just as lost as she was then...perhaps more so. But she knows that tomorrow, she'll go looking for her wedding dress, and it will be white because it's not Halloween yet.
