Who: Steph Squared. Stephen Cornfoot and Stephanie Fawcett
When: Wednesday Night!
Where: Stephen's flat!
What: Stephen brews tea and entices his bestie with the promise of a good cup for her company.
Rating: PG-13 for possible bad words? Idk!
Open/Closed: Closed

The dreams had been better as of late, so much so that he looked visibly more relaxed than he had in the past couple of days. Perhaps it was tied directly to the new hire on at Tea and Sympathy? Merlin being hired meant Stephen didn't have to do everything by himself. Oh, sure he had help for serving the tea but so far he was one of the only good fortunetellers at the place. That was sure to change with Merlin's arrival. The young man was insanely talented, more than he probably knew.

It was this that did occupy Stephen's thoughts as he brewed the tea for Stephanie's arrival. He could hardly wait to tell her the news. Why, this meant he could have one of the more experienced workers act as manager when he and Cake weren't available! He could go out for once!

Sighing happily he awaited the knock on his door and he consequential entrance of Stephanie. He could feel it in his bones that she'd be there at any minute and in fact had ready for her a cup with the exact amount of milk and sugar she liked. It rested on a coaster on his large wooden coffee table next to a stack of books about Astronomy and Astrology.

Any minute now, he glanced at his watch and looked up just as she did knock and enter.

"You're late by a whole minute, actually. Unless my watch is fast."

The day, as far as Stephanie's standards went, was very fulfilling and utterly unreproducible. It was just one of those perfect days. There were perfect moments like a Paris in the spring at sunrise, or sitting by the fire with a cup of blueberry tea wrapped up in a blanket on a snowy winter evening...but that day had been full of perfect moments. From the way the sun fell onto the pavement and her shoulders, warming her through, the looks on people's faces as they watched her art come to life on the sidewalk, and the utter sereneness in her mind as she worked...it had been flawless.

Of course, then Stephen had to call her Phanny and she'd been momentarily upset...until he mentioned tea. Steph couldn't help forgiving him so easily. Anyone else she would be sore at for quite some time, but Stephen could get out of it. She had wanted to see him anyway, so even though she tried to keep a scowl on her features, she failed. By the time she left her flat, she was smiling again.

She apparated part of the way, and walked the rest, simply because she liked walking. Plus, it was just as nice of an evening as it had been an afternoon. It didn't take too long for her to get to his flat, honestly. She knocked and let herself right in, greeted not by a hello, but with the response only a Seer would say when you hadn't said when you thought you might arrive.

She grinned a bit and unhooked her hands from her vest pockets, "You know me, Stephen. Time is pretty much meaningless. But I did get momentarily distracted when I stepped in gum. No worries. I got it off," she babbled happily as she entered his flat and took up her usual seat where her tea was awaiting her.

Not even bothering to ask if it was hers, just knowing, she picked it up and took a sip, humming appreciatively, "Best tea ever, that is. This mostly makes up for the Phanny comment."

For a moment his heart went nuts upon hearing her speak.

GUM. ON. HER. SHOE.

Stephen almost said something, tried very, very hard to not sound... pathetic and nervous, but he was and it was impossible for him to not feel as such when there was this looming threat of something sticky getting on his wood flooring and the tile mosiac he had recently put in near the kitchen. But, then, she reassured him she got it off and he felt a thousand times better.

Still, when she went to sit he neared her and leaned down to gingerly pick her feet up one at a time to inspect the bottoms of her shoes properly. Once pleased he sighed happily and circled around where she sat to settle beside her.

"Now that.. the crisis has been avoided and averted," he muttered, picking up his own cup to sip on as he shifted to sit cross legged facing her.

"I have something that will make up for it entirely and might even put me in good graces for.. I'd say a good week. Want to guess?"

As soon as she'd stepped in the gum, she had known that she had to get it properly off of her shoes before she even got near Stephen's building. So she'd racked her brain for the proper charm and got it off with fairly little hassle.

She grinned idiotically when he inspected her feet, knowing that it was going to happen just because it was Stephen. He was the one thing that was consistent in her life that she'd never tire of. Everything else was always lost its shine, but not Stephen. He helped her get through most days, just by being there to tell her random snippets...reassure her in ways that no one else possibly could.

Not wanting to get her shoes on his couch, she slipped them off there and left them neatly on the floor. She followed suit and faced him, but pulled her knees to her chest instead, her favored position. She sipped her tea as he spoke, raising an eyebrow at his declaration. This had to be something good. Unlike Stephen, she was not the master of guessing games, but she decided to try anyway.

"Hmmm...let's see," she made a little bit of a face as she thought, trying honestly to make a proper guess, "You...have a day off and are going to come watch me draw and keep me company one day?"

The expression writ across his face was priceless. She guessed so correctly, well, nearly, that he entertained the idea of having her read his palm right quick for an impromptu fortunetelling. However, it suddenly occurred to him that she might've guessed as such because she was very logical, as were most Claws. Perhaps she had whittled down her choices of a respectable answer by determining what had recently been openly bothering him.

Getting a day off to visit her as she worked had been high up there, hadn't it? Still, to make her feel ... well, appreciated, he tilted his head and smiled broadly.

"Stephanie Fawcett you little seer! How did you know?" then he leaned forward to place a hand on her small knee.

"Have you been reading your tarot cards like a good little witch?" with a crisp laugh he sat back up and took a mild sip of his tea before setting it to the side on a coaster.

"I hired someone to help read fortunes.. so yes, a day off! Ever hear of a bloke named Merlin Toke?"

From the look on his face, at first she thought that she'd been horribly wrong. The thought itself made her feel a bit down, because she loved when Stephen got to come watch her 'work.' He understood her better than anyone else, so he often got hidden meanings behind her artwork at least somewhat better. She began rolling a few more options around in her head, but then he was...well, smiling.

She'd been right? How could that have been? Sure, she was good at coming to logical conclusions, and he had mentioned wanting to watch her work, so it had been a safe answer, but for Stephanie to guess right on the first time was truly a mostly unheard of phenomenon.

She felt like putting down her tea and ambushing him with a hug the thought thrilled her so much. So she did just that with a little laugh of her own, "I'm a loss at tarot cards. But you really get a day off? Merlin, that's like...the best news ever, or at least way up there!"

She pried herself off of him a little, but stayed close just in case he gave her reason to pounce again. The smile on her face was brilliant. The perfect day had just gotten infinitely more perfect, "Merlin Toke...sounds a bit familiar. I don't think he was Ravenclaw, but maybe a year or so behind me?"

All of the sudden, she was extremely hyper, unable to sit quite still, "I need to come up with something totally inspired for the day you get to watch."

The hug did catch him by surprise but it was not unwelcomed. It was very natural the way she fit against him, the way he opened his arms to embrace her and hold her to his form where she fit like a puzzle piece. He didn't let her sit back so easily, however. Not when he caught a whiff of that shampoo.

Ungh, Stephen had such a thing for the scent it was borderline obsessive. Just as soon as she tried to sit up he sat up too and drew her back down against him. Then, a hand went to the top of her head and he slid his long fingers through her pretty hair as he pressed his nose to her temple.

"You do this on purpose, I swear," he muttered, breathing deep that thick scent of blueberry. Only after a good couple sniffs did he loosen his hold.

"Gryffindor, actually, though he might've been a claw.. he's gifted. I mean really gifted. Raw, you know? Kind of like your talent.. raw, uninhibited, though it looks like it bothers him to be as such. He's my new project, I want to help shape him, shape his talent like my Grandma Esther shaped mine."

Stephen sighed contently and tilted his chin back a bit, eyes closing. He could honestly lay like this forever, with his best, blueberry scented friend laying atop him, warming up his chest. His heart did a strange thing then, flip-flopped and he wrote it off as being excited about his news.

"I'm sure you'll come up with something, you always do."

Something about hugging Stephen had always been so natural...in fact, anything about being close to him had. Stephanie wasn't someone that gave out her affection lightly, and she wasn't known as a 'hugger', but it was just different with her best friend. She was completely at ease around him.

She laughed when he pulled her back, falling easily against his chest again, and permitting him to smell her hair, to run his fingers through it. Anyone else and they probably would have been getting a punch in the stomach. But Steph knew how much he loved the scent of her shampoo, so she just laughed softly when he breathed in, feeling slightly ticklish. Him playing in her hair made her eyes drift closed for a moment. She'd hardly admit it, but she actually had a soft spot for that...it made her feel so relaxed and almost sleepy.

"You caught me," she faux confessed, going along with it just for the hell of it. He could hold her there as long as he wanted. Just the smelling usually made her laugh, his hand in her hair like that? She didn't want to move.

"I was thinking Gryffindor. It's good to hear that he's got potential like that though, and that he's doing something with it. It always makes me a bit sad to think talent's going wasted. Maybe he'll embrace it with your guidance," she said, sounding utterly complacent. She thought about how both she and Stephen both had such rare talents...how the complemented one another and always had. Fate had destined them to be friends. It was always fate, and she knew it.

The grin was still situated on her face, but it was softening, and she was calm again as quickly as she'd become hyper. There was nothing else quite like this. There were two places in the world where she felt at peace...when she was with her art, and when she was with Stephen. Especially when she got to lay there and listen to his heart. No matter how many times she heart it there was still something fascinating about the steady rhythm. It was soothing and reassuring.

"I'll just have to ponder it a while to come up with something worthy enough of that day," she breathed out softly, "You know how I said earlier that today was perfect? Well, this just makes it even better."

He got his best visions, or rather, his most soothing visions when she was atop him, chest to chest, heart to heart. He never questioned why and always chalked it up to being kindred spirits. When she pressed her forehead up against the curve of his neck he would shift to better accommodate for her legs and his twisting together like branches of an old tree shifting in the wind.

Idly now his hands had begun to rub circles on her back, one drifting up to absently stroke through her hair as he allowed his thoughts to drift. Her voice did not bother him a lick, it only served to ease his racing thoughts.

A river. Floating down a river. A river means.. a life force, emotions.. a second river joining the main course?

His eyes fluttered open.

"Yeah? Hm... oh hey! I forgot to mention.. remember uh.. Morag Macdougal? She might be my new room mate!"

Stephanie didn't allow certain thoughts to pass through her mind when they were like this. She just let go of everything else and focused on the very moment. It wasn't difficult seeing as she was such a present person in the first place. Friends, she knew, didn't often do this...not even the best of them, but she and Stephen had always had a unique relationship. They were connected, and she felt as though her energy was his...that they somehow completed one another.

As he rubbed circles on her back she thought about his hands...not like any others. They were large and somehow delicate while still being strong. Thin, artfully made fingers...wide palm...and somehow they fit perfectly with hers. And there he went with the hair again. She could almost swear she was falling asleep.

For a few moments, she didn't know whether time ended and stretched out infinitely, or if it was cut off at a moment. She was pulled back from some place between awake and dreaming when he started talking again, at once alert at the mention of him forgetting to mention something.

And...Morag Macdougal? Roommate?! From what Steph could recall, she was an incredibly pretty redhead in their house who was outgoing and friendly. But for some reason...at that moment Steph felt a very strong surge of hatred for the girl. Pure, loathing, want to tear her apart hatred. Despite his hold on her, Steph found herself attempting to get untangled from him all of the sudden, "A new female room mate?" she asked. Much to her displeasure, her voice sounded oddly distressed and even offended. She had no logical explanation for her reaction, "You forgot to tell me something like that? That's...a pretty important thing to just forget."

The calm was shattered. Her mind was wild, and it wasn't stopping...was there something else she didn't know? Anything else? And why...why did she feel hurt? Surely he'd meant to tell her...god...she couldn't breathe properly...

He had drifted back to his peaceful place rather quickly after mentioning Morag. Stephen didn't think much of the admission and even anticipated Stephanie saying something sweet, casual, calm, cool, collected.

Not crazy bat-shit insane! Stephen was jerked out of his vision hard and didn't bother fighting her when she jerked out of his arms the way she did. He was too surprised to react properly and simply laid there looking utterly and completely baffled. One dark eyebrow arched and he lifted a hand to rub his chin and then scratch at his head.

Stephen shifted to sit up and shrugged those bony shoulders.

"Sorry? I uh.. I mean, it just.. it's not official, she hasn't seen the place yet but.. I need a flatmate and she needs one where she can bring her piano and you know how I've always wanted a piano so really, it's kind of perfect and.. I thought you liked Morag?"

Merlin he was confused! Stephen shook his head and scrunched up his nose.

"Stephanie, are you really mad at me?"

Sitting at the end of the couch again with her knees up, her arms wrapped around them, and her head low...Stephanie didn't really know what had come over her. She watched him for a moment, so many emotions flowing through her that she didn't know which ones she really felt and which ones were just going to pass in a moment.

She wasn't like this...Steph was calm, she was sweet, she was understanding and never overreacted like that. It freaked her out, confused her...what was the deal? Stephen looked as confused as she felt about the whole thing. God...she wasn't going to cry, was she?

Listening to him talk helped. She kept her mind on every word, and as he explained...she could see the logic in it. What wasn't illogical was this...she didn't know, fear? Was that it? One word flashed across her mind. Jealousy. If that wasn't silly, she didn't know what was.

"I thought I did too," she mumbled, still a bit lost in thought, her cheeks flushed, but there were thankfully not tears like she had worried. How was she going to explain this? And what on earth was she going to do if somehow or another he ended up getting vibes from her and figuring out what this really was when she didn't really know for certain herself?

"I don't know..." She sighed and let herself out of the curled up position she'd reduced to, scooting just a bit closer to him, "No. I just...I have no idea what that was about...I honestly don't. I...overreacted for some reason. Maybe it was because I was half-asleep as it was...I was just so relaxed and that wasn't something I was expecting you to say. I was caught off guard is all," as she spoke, she was trying to convince herself of it as well. That had to be it, "I'm sorry. Take me back? I promise I'll be perfectly zen." She was regretting untangling herself now.

Stephen didn't know what else to say in regards to her outburst. He didn't often quiet his arguments so easily as he enjoyed a good, logical debate. Especially if he knew he was going to win! But with Stephanie he never pushed her when he didn't have to or when he thought it might hurt her. Instead he calmed himself and listening to every word she spoke carefully.

When she moved closer he tilted his head and glanced down to her palm as if it might hold an answer to their questions. Why had she gotten so... so...

Weird?

Oh well. He sighed, girls. Sometimes they really were a mystery if not the biggest mystery ever! He smiled easily and opened his arms wide.

"Of course you muppet, get back here," and he didn't wait for her to move. Stephen leaned forward and grabbed at her so he could lay back and hold her in his arms once more. Once settled as he wanted he kissed her forehead and smiled.

"Must be your time of the month, eh?" and he had to fight a laugh and went to hold down her arms. "Ah, ha don't hurt me, please, please..."

For a split second, she tried to think of another time when she'd acted this way before...and she couldn't put her finger on a single time. Stephanie was not an overreacter, just like she wasn't a good guesser. As much as she tried to tell herself that it was silly, a little nagging voice in the back of her head was telling her she knew exactly what was wrong, and she just didn't want to admit it...she told it to shut the hell up.

The smile on his face brought one back to her own, and she laughed softly when he called her a muppet. Everything was going to be alright then. She knew that it would be, but her own reaction had been bad for her...she could only imagine what it was like for him.

She snuggled into him when he pulled her back. She could breathe easier again. That was all it took. Being back in his arms was like an instant cure, making her feel better again. The softest hint of a blush rose to her cheeks when he kissed her forehead, and she smiled an almost secretive smile to herself.

Then he had to make a wise crack. Of course, like any self-respecting woman, she fought against his hold on principle, but she couldn't break free, "Stephen Felix! That is the second time tonight you've made me say your middle name! You are so lucky you're stronger than me," she blew a bit of hair out of her eyes as she half way looked up at him, even though she was pulled tightly to his chest.

She could still use her fingers so she gave him bit of a jab in the side that probably didn't hurt at all and decided that would have to suffice, "You're actually wrong about that one, for your information. But let's not talk about my monthly. It's weird," She relaxed a bit against him, deciding that the best way to get him to let her go was to be still. She wasn't going to hit him now anyway.

"You're insanely lucky that I love you," Her wrath was probably fearsome, but it was so rare that it was hard to say exactly what happened. Still, what she said was the truth...he was her best friend, and she loved him. It certainly wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last time she said it.

"It's gross, not weird. Natural, not weird, but.. yes, unclean," the very thought of uncleanliness made Stephen squirm. He scrunched his nose again but dropped the subject best he could to keep himself from feeling ill and from her punching his gut.

Her admission of loving him was a good change of subject. Stephen didn't have many people that told him such a thing. His mother, on occasions, never his father and always Grandma Esther. The two people he loved to hear it from most were his Grandma and his Stephanie.

"I know it," he murmured quietly. "Love you too."

Then after a moment of silence he shifted an arm under his head.

"Anything new happening with you, though?"

When he dropped the topic, she let it slide easily, not particularly wanting to keep on that train of thought anyway. It was strange to talk about that kind of stuff with him, just because of the gender difference. She talked about pretty much everything else with him.

It made her get that warm, fuzzy feeling that girls, by default, seemed to adore when he said that he loved her too. There was something about being loved that was just nice...especially since Stephen was really and truly the only one that told her so very often. Her family really wasn't the 'loving' type, bound by their gene pool and little else. And Stephanie...well, she was the disappointment of the family.

She shifted with him easily, settling more comfortably since he wasn't pinning her arms down. From her view point, she could see an angle of his face, and while one of her arms tucked into his side, the other laid simply flat-palmed against his chest, fingers at his collarbone.

New in her life? What wasn't, from moment to moment? But then again...not much had changed either, "Not particularly. I mean...I got one of those journals obviously, after talking with my mother and sister. Jolene wants me to go to Paris with her in the fall for a little while...I don't know though. It's so far off to be committing myself to something like that," she gave a soft sigh. Stephanie loved Paris...but she hated being away from home, from Stephen. Without him her life fell apart.

"S'nice," he murmured, obviously his thoughts drifting again. Back down that river that kept appearing within his mind when he was near her. Comfort. Peace. Joy. Grace. His heart beat slowed and thudded loudly as it did and his breathing became deeper and deeper until...

Until she mentioned Paris and going away for a little while. There was no denying the rapidness in which his core began to beat. Stephen's eyes never opened though and he spoke as if he wasn't suddenly very anxious.

"Oh? That'll be.. fantastic... you know the fall is coming up quickly though, quicker than we're realizing. I love the fall, don't you? Remember that year we spent charming piles of leaves together to jump in them? And then I jumped in one and a Jarvey had gotten into the pile and when I practically pile drived it, the blasted thing spewed the foulest string of cusses we had ever heard?"

It might just have been her imagination, but Stephanie was pretty sure that Stephen didn't want her to go to Paris. Despite what he was saying, she had the advantage of hearing just how quickly his heart was thumping in his chest. That wasn't an 'it's all okay' rhythm. Even if his voice was even, his heart was not.

"Maybe, but I still don't know if I really want to go...it makes me uneasy to think about it. I like Paris better in the Spring anyway," Stephanie hadn't said yes to her sister yet, but she hadn't said no either. Jolene experienced Paris through shopping, and Stephanie experienced it through the beauty of the city itself. Plus...leaving Stephen made her depressed and incredibly uninspired.

"Fall is fantastic though. I remember that quite vividly. I think it turned the air completely blue," she laughed softly, "Oh, and then there was that time when we decided we wanted to make jack-o-lanterns around Halloween and I got so incredibly detailed with it that it took hours to finish. Should I apologize again for throwing those pumpkin guts at you?"

"And Paris in Fall is pretty good too," he opened his eyes and glanced down to try and read her expression. "I've always wanted to do Paris in the Fall... hey, maybe, with this time off I can get that chance.."

Not that he was inviting himself, but if he happened to go to Paris for a spell and she happened to be there., wouldn't that be grand?

"Uh, yes.." he shuddered at the very thought of the innards of the pumpkin. "Disgusting, you owe me for life for that one!"

From his position, she knew that he was viewing a slight bit of a pout on her lips. He knew just as well as anyone how much Stephanie tended to shy away planning ahead more than a day in advance...but from what he was saying, maybe he would be in Paris at the same time she was.

This brightened her outlook on the trip considerably. Perhaps she wouldn't have to upset her sister after all, "You have to," she concluded decisively, "I don't know if I could go without you." This confession fell easily from her lips now, the little worry that she hadn't dared to utter before he said he might be able to take the time off. The distance, she thought, affected him in the same negative way.

"And I'll make it up to you for life. Promise," she laughed softly, content to just lay there with her best friend for a while. She didn't mind if they spoke or not...she just wanted to be there with him.

Stephen didn't say much more on the topic. He kept his thoughts, worries, excitement for possibilities, all to himself. It wasn't that he was hiding things from her it was just that sometimes she didn't need to hear what he was thinking. She knew already.

The rest of the night was spent doing things that most would declare to be a Ravenclaw's dream. Reading, talking, listening to music and sketching. It was nights like this that made Stephen wish they never had to end.
