i'm a man on a mission
[WHO] Eddie Carmichael and Megan Jones
[WHERE] Grocery store near his house in Muggle London
[WHAT] Eddie is buying some more cat food for Cat.
[WHEN] Mid-afternoon.
[RATING] PG?

He had been away for a couple weeks, and though Eddie had come back every few days to check on Cat and make sure she had enough food (and change her litter box), it was now time to buy more food for her. Luckily he'd invested in both a nifty food-dispenser-thing that managed itself, and one of those water fountains for pets that flowed constantly as it plugged into the wall. Sure, he could have just enchanted it, but Eddie liked the little contraptions as they were and thought they were cute. Luckily Cat wasn't a big eater, but he felt bad leaving her by herself so much. Today he had decided to spend the afternoon with Cat and apologize to her for leaving and explain to her why she couldn't come with him.

He sat down on his living room floor, across from Cat, who was a gorgeous calico with bright eyes. She mewled at him and rubbed her face against his knee.

"Hey there, girlie," Eddie said. He scratched behind her ear. "I'm sorry I keep coming and going. You remember Auntie Catherine, right?"

To some extent, Eddie liked to believe that Cat really understood him. To another extent, it just made him feel better having someone to talk to who wouldn't talk back (but who would scratch back.)

"Well, she's very sick, Cat. So I have to make sure she's okay. But you're a big girl and you can take care of yourself. I can't bring you with me because they have a big Rottweiler who my sister calls Lysander, and he doesn't like cats. The poorest of poor taste he has, I know."

Cat purred and he scratched right in front of her tail. She curled her tail around his hand and he played with it briefly.

"But this afternoon has been all for you. We've had a lot of fun, right? We played with your favorite toy and I even fed you tuna straight from the can. So you can't get too mad at me, girlie."

He picked Cat up and hugged her, then laid back on his floor facing the ceiling and held her up Rafiki-style before settling her down on his chest. She stretched out a bit, then sat down and made herself comfortable. For a few minutes he just enjoyed relaxing with Cat. "I'm gonna go out and get you some food, Cat. I'll be back later. I can't stay the night, but I'll be home for good real soon, okay? And then I'll buy you so much tuna that you'll be able to supply all the cats of Brunei with tuna for the rest of their lives, though I have my reservations about your ability to share your favorite food."

Cat's ear twitched.

"I thought so. Okay, girlie, get up so Eddie can go buy you food. Be a good girl while I'm away."

Cat jumped off of Eddie's chest and ran off to play with one of her toys. Eddie pulled himself up and fixed his shirt, grabbed his eyes, and locked up the apartment.

Once at the grocery store, Eddie browsed through a bunch of things before he finally arrived at the pet food aisle. He scanned the shelves for Cat's favorite brand before he finally found it. He grabbed a bag of cat food, along with a couple extra toys--he spoiled Cat the way a proud father spoils a daughter--and a new scratching post. At first he had been unsure about taking on the responsibility of a pet, but Cat had become his constant companion and he loved the little feline to pieces. Taking care of her made him happy.

He waited in line at the grocery store and tried to peek his head around the people in front of him to see if Delaney was working. Sadly, there was a new guy behind the counter, and Eddie felt a slight sense of disappointment. He liked Delaney; she was cute and was full of energy. Oh well. He began fishing his wallet out of his pocket as he waited to check out.

Megan was having a pretty normal day. She'd gotten everything she needed done at work today done so they let her go early. Unfortunately there was only so much you could do while waiting for plants to mature. So, she didn't complain and left work happy that she had an entire afternoon to get things done. Not that she had a large list of things to get done, but it was nice knowing that she wasn't going to be running errands after a long shift at work.

So her last stop of the afternoon was the grocery. She'd wandered down the isle and seriously wondered about what some people considered food these days. Deciding to give up on trying to find anything that sounded good, she just stuck to the basics, figuring she could always run back out later or something. Some bread, cheese, and a couple of apples later Megan stood in line to check out. There was a man in front of her who looked vaguely familiar but for the moment Megan was having trouble placing him. So she decided to just go for it and see where it lead. Classic Jones behavour.

"These things always seem to be the longest when you've only got a few things, yeah?" she said her way of starting up a conversation to scratch her curiosity.

The new cashier was indeed taking a lot longer than Eddie would have liked, but as a fellow cashier, he understood that it is a daunting task. Even if you had been a cashier for two years at one store, once you change stores the system is almost always different, with different codes to enter and different buttons to press. Unless this kid had never been a cashier before, in which case Eddie really felt bad for him, because grocery stores were pretty fast-paced, and hungry people were almost always in worse moods.

When someome spoke behind him, he turned around and realized that, once again, he had been in line at this grocery store and, once again, it was a girl who had spoken to him from behind. What a sight he must have been; a fully-grown man carrying a cute little bag of cat food and two adorable cat toys and a scratching post with a super-happy looking kitty jumping over a rainbow on the wrapping. He laughed the thought away and bowed slightly to the girl. "Good afternoon, milday." Always the charmer, he was. "It does seem to be that way, indeed," he agreed. "The regular cashier is not here today, otherwise the line would be going much more quickly."

Once he had finished speaking, Eddie got a better look at her face, and once again felt as though he should know her, but he didn't. That had been happening a lot lately. But he firmly reminded himself that this was the Muggle world and that the change of running into another person from Hogwarts was very slim. Oh, little did he know...

Megan didn't really think much of what he was holding, mainly because she was so used to seeing people buying weird things on a daily basis it just didn't phase her anymore. Coming from a half and half family, Megan had stopped being shocked by the items available and what people would walk out of shops with long ago.

His face still wasn't ringing any bells and it was starting to bug her. She normally was very good with names and faces. But right now, this brain freeze was driving her a bit mad. Until he started to speak. She could honestly say that she didn't know too many people spoke with that kind of vernacular. She was at least sure of where she knew him from now. If she was correct she knew him from school, he was maybe a little bit older than herself, but that was alright.

"Poor kid." she said looking up the line a bit. "Looks new, being stuck here on a busy day like this. But then again, some people learn better that way?" she offered.

"Okay, I'm sorry, but this is driving me nuts. I know you from somewhere. Megan Jones." she said adjusting the apples in her hands.

"That is what they did to me at my job when I started. Lovely time, really." he said with a slightly sarcastic grin. "But, yes, it does kind of force you to pick up the ropes."

The moment the girl said her name, Eddie felt a little bit like a deer in the headlights. Yes, he knew he was slowly getting back into the swing of the wizarding world, but he didn't expect to start running into everyone from Hogwarts all at once, and especially not all at the same damn grocery store in Muggle London, anyhow. Eddie quickly smiled and bowed his head towards her, as doing his normal full bow would have caused all the cat stuff he was carrying to slip from his grasp.

"Ah, Miss Jones, we went to school together. I believe I was a year above you? Anyway, I am Eddie Carmichael, at your service."

Megan looked up at the next person in line, a little old lady who seemed very friendly. So friendly in fact that she was regaling the poor cashier with what seemed to be her life's story. Today just wasn't that kid's day was it? Megan silently vowed to herself that when she got up there she'd be friendly, but to the point. "I think I prefer it that way." she said offhandedly. "I mean, it'd rather know what I need to improve on and what I can get down right away." she shrugged. Why she was telling him this, she had no idea, but she was saying it anyway.

It was like the proverbial light bulb going off in Megan's head. "Eddie." she said happily as her brain slid into focus to try and picture him back then. "I believe you were a year a head of me." she said thinking back on it. Eddie had been very popular among the female population of the school. "How odd running into each other here, yeah?" she noted. "I haven't seen you in ages. Everything going alright? I see you've got a nice little kitty then?" she said not sure if that was a question or not. After all for all she knew he was doing a favour for a friend or something.

Eddie couldn't quite hold back a wince for the cashier, knowing all too well the sweet little old ladies who invited him to their house for tea on at least a daily basis. He always felt bad turning them down, but felt even worse the one time he had agreed out of sympathy and then couldn't go because he'd been called into work. "Registers are mostly all the same," he said. "the concept does not change, but from company to company the little details can change drastically, and it gets a bit confusing when you first start out."

Back in school Eddie had been a bit on the skinny side with much shorter hair, and he'd always kept himself clean-shaven. Now, seven years later though, he'd built himself up pretty darn well and he'd not only grown out his hair a bit but he'd let some facial hair grow in. So far the ladies seemed to like it, but he did look very different (although no less handsome!)

"I've been out of town, so to speak. Things are going well enough for me," he said, and if you didn't know that his sister was sick and that all was not well, you would have never been able to tell by how smoothly he responded. He smiled. "It is not I who owns my cat, but rather, my cat who owns me. She absolutely demanded that I restock her food supply today. Is all going well for you?"

"Oh yeah?" she asked curious. "I'm never near out register. And when I am, it takes me forever to figure out how it works alone." Megan let out a little embarrassed laugh. "I'm convinced that's why they keep me in back with the plants." she covered, poking fun at herself a bit.

"Good, I'm glad to hear that." she said genuinely. The last few years had been hard on a lot of people, so she had to learn how to actually enjoy the good things in life, it was one habit that she was happy not to be able to break. Megan's smiled widened at his response about the cat. "Doesn't that always seem to be the way it works?" she admitted. "My dog growing up was the same way. He'd bring us his bowl if we were five minutes late filling it up." Jessie had been a great first pet, and she honestly didn't know why she didn't have anything else but goldfish right now. But with her not being home as much as she'd like Bruce and Clark were alright for right now.
