honey, I ain't ever seen eyes like yours.
who: Eddie Carmichael and whoever wants to bump into this pretty boy.
what: He is buying groceries in Muggle London and is chatting up the cashier.
when: Late afternoon/early evening.
where: Grocery store.
rating/warning: Eddie's a shameless flirt?

Eddie leaned over the counter and grinned at the girl ringing up his groceries. "Miss...Delaney, is that right? As I was saying, I'm about three miles out into the middle of the Pacific, right? We're on this rickety little boat. Just me and some mates heading out for some deep-sea fishing before we pitched the tent for the night."

The cashier, a pretty girl with dark hair and bright eyes named Delaney, listened to his story as she punched in the code for a half-pound of apples. Delaney looked at him curiously. "You go camping, too?"

"Of course I do, m'lady," he watched as Delaney blushed at being addressed like that, "all the time. I go all-out, too." Eddie stretched his arms out, as if to say Hey, look at how buff I am! even though he knew he was rather skinny. "When my mates and I go, we catch our own fish and build our own fires and all those other terribly manly things."

Delaney laughed and totaled out his purchase. "You must have tons of fun." She looked distant for a moment. "You know, Eddie, I always laugh when you come in here."

Eddie winked at her. "I just do my job to keep a pretty girl happy. You are worthy of the utmost serenity, my dear lady," he said with a bow. "Perhaps I should have brought you lunch? Or maybe a carrot cake from across the street?" He had seen her eating carrot cake on her break once.

"Oh, you don't have to do that..."

"But what kind of man would I be if I left you here to starve on your shift? Come now."

The girl seemed to be moving much faster now that Eddie was out of the way and not paying her quite as much attention. In fact, it didn’t take her long at all to ring up Maisie’s things and then display the price for her. She fished around in her pocket book for the appropriate amount and handed it over without complaint, grabbing her few bags while still paying a bit of attention to Eddie herself. It would be rude not to, she supposed, now that she’d brought his attention to her.

She couldn’t help but feel ever so slightly flattered, even though he was being all dramatic about it. She idly thought that Eddie probably would have made a fantastic actor. Her bags really weren’t all that heavy, so she saw fit to encourage his antics slightly. She might as well, right? Maisie gave a curtsey in response to his bow, a little grin quirking her own lips, “Well, you make yourself quite unforgettable,” she replied, “Though, we were never properly introduced. You, good sir, may call me Maisie.”

"And a wonderful name the fair maiden has, almost as beautiful as thineself." Eddie was a closet geek at heart and loved fantasy stories, and sometimes when trying to impress women he began speaking like they did in his stories in order to, if nothing else, amuse them (and thus make them remember him fondly.) "Allow me to carry your bags, if you will," he said; he had only bought the basics for himself and thus only had one bag of groceries. He reached out to grab her bags. "A shame we were not introduced earlier."

Maisie couldn’t help but be enthralled by his mannerisms, “You flatter me,” she tried not to, but she couldn’t help but blush a little. It wasn’t often that a guy paid her any attention at all, much less that one flattered her and offered to carry her grocery bags. For a moment, she wondered if it was really that smart to let him walk her anywhere, what with the fact that she didn’t really know him that well. Plus, if they reached her flat, then he’d know where she lived. But then, she didn’t think he would be throwing rocks at her window trying to steal her virtue any time soon either. So, why the hell not, she thought.

“Why, thank you. You’re too kind,” she said, feeling as though she should keep one of her bags at least, but relinquishing them because she had a feeling he’d protest. Probably something about breaking her nails or lady’s shouldn’t have to carry things of the sort, something like that, “A shame indeed...but better late than never, I always say,” she remarked, walking with him at an easy pace. Of all the things she thought would happen that night, officially meeting Eddie had not been on the list, but she couldn’t say she was disappointed.

Eddie carried her groceries with pride as they walked, although as they exited the store he didn't forget to turn around briefly and say goodbye to Delaney. It was just good gentlemanship, he thought to himself, then wondered if that was even a word. Eddie turned his attention back to Maisie. He would scarcely admit it out loud but he still didn't remember meeting her during his years at Hogwarts. Then again, maybe he had; it had been years since he'd seen anyone from that school--which was mostly intentional on his part--and maybe all the people he'd come to know in the Muggle world had just taken over that part of his memory, kind of like when you know one language but then you learn another and it starts replacing the first one bit by bit until you only remember the basics.

"The lady speaks the truth," Eddie grinned. It was about the time of day when most people were heading home and starting dinner, so the sidewalks were not very crowded. "So, school together, eh Maisie? It's been a while since I've seen anyone from there. Did they.. get everything back in order, then?" He might not have been involved with the Wizarding world since after his graduation the year before the war broke out, but he still cared about the school and how it was running. He had had some great years there and, as a whole, looked back fondly on his Hogwarts time.

The war hadn't scared Maisie off from the magical world, though she'd always lived a little bit between worlds. Her Mum was a muggleborn, so she knew all about muggle things, and loved a great deal of them. She just wasn't into denying what she was or what she thought she was meant to be. The one thing that Maisie had ever really thought she was great at was Transfiguration, which was why she tried so hard to perfect that great skill of hers, why she had been so intent on becoming an animagus. Her persistence had gotten her many places over the years. She had wanted to finish her schooling, and wouldn't hear of any suggestion that she shouldn't. Maisie much preferred to face that fear head on than run away from it...she didn't think it would solve anything in her life to turn her back on what she knew.

She nodded softly, feeling almost a bit reverent of the school they had gone too. Many things had changed, but then, she had enjoyed her last few years, "I was in Gryffindor, a fifth year during the war," she supplied, pausing for a few moments, "School was pretty much the same after it all. I mean...it took it's losses a bit hard, and sometimes the atmosphere was more severe...people were just on edge everywhere, you know? But I hear they're doing alright still...some of the teaching positions are hard to fill, I think, but it's still Hogwarts," It was almost a bit hard to talk about the place that she loved so much that had seen so much hardship. Sometimes at night she was still haunted by the horrible sounds of the Final Battle...the screaming and the sights of all those people after it was all over would be something she could never forget.

Eddie had always been a lover, not a fighter, and war was definitely one of those fights he preferred to stay far, far away from. As a half-blood whose mother had not necessarily wanted a magical child and the only one of three Carmichael children to possess magical abilities, Eddie had grown up in a thoroughly Muggle house. It wasn't that his mother had ever been less than a wonderful parent, but as he had been the only one... It had just been easier to live as a Muggle, Eddie had learned, than try to stay in a Wizarding world where you couldn't go a damn day without reading about someone else dying. He didn't care who had started the war or who was doing what. War was just one of those things he would have absolutely no part in.

He nodded. "I was a Ravenclaw. I graduated just before that whole mess broke out." For the moment, it seemed, he had subconsciously dropped the Arthurian speech to discuss a more solemn topic. "Well, I'm glad they got it back together. Good school, that one. I would have hated to hear that it fell apart. Were you.. involved?" Maybe it was too blunt a question to ask. But he wanted to know what had taken place; he had not heard from, or tried to contact, the Wizarding world in seven years and it was driving him crazy not knowing some things. He laughed, but it was not a laugh of joy; it was more like a kind of bitter scoff. Eddie had few regrets, but this was not the time for them, as suddenly he seemed to realize how serious the conversation was getting, and he quickly tried to change the subject, his regular persona popping back into place.

"It has just come to my attention, my dearest, that I do not know to where I am bringing your groceries. Might you enlighten me as to this piece of knowledge?"

The question that Eddie asked her almost made Maisie feel choked, but she swallowed the sudden lump in her throat. She often thought about that night, and wished there had been more that she had been able to do. The logical part of her brain told her that a fifteen year old was unevenly matched against a Death Eater, but she wondered if she had been able to fight, would she have been able to save someone’s life? Anyone’s...even if it had cost her her own. She hesitated a few moments, but she didn’t shy away from answering, “I was there, but I wasn’t allowed to fight...my brother locked my sister and me in a classroom, and stood guard outside. I still wonder...if I had just done something...but I guess it doesn’t matter now,” she felt like her mind was drifting back to that night, and wondered if he could see the ghosts of her past in her eyes. Maisie hated reliving it...the terror of not knowing what was happening outside the door, but being able to hear so many horrible sounds. She felt disarmed, helpless...but she kept herself carefully intact.

The change of subject was like a godsend. She managed a smile that mostly made it to her eyes, and her shoulders straightened a bit. The weight of their conversation was suddenly infinitely less burdened, “Two more blocks straight, then take a left and it’s the third building. That’s where my flat is. But if it’s out of your way, I can make it back without coming across too much trouble, I believe,” she was giving him an out, even though she didn’t really want to. Even if their conversation had been at least momentarily serious...Maisie liked talking to Eddie. She liked the company, any company...he’d made her day a little brighter.
