Who: Fred and Verity
What: After Work
When: After this.
Where: Their home
Rating/Warning: TBA

Like most days, Charlotte - if she'd spent the day at the shop with her dad - was dead on her feet by the time it was time to close up. Asleep on Fred's shoulder was more like it, and he gathered her up and said a goodbye to George, then apparated home. He wasn't sure if Verity was home yet, sometimes it took longer to close up the shop in Hogsmeade, but he'd look for her after he had Charlie settled into bed, which was where he headed first.

Like most nights, she woke up as soon as he got her into her room, something about all the stuffed animals being charmed to realize she was home and welcome her in. A few minutes later she was changed for bed, but still so sleepy that Fred only got halfway through a very dramatic performance of "The Warlock's Hairy Heart" before she was asleep again.

"Good night, princess - " He wispered, something he'd only learned how to do at all when she was a baby, and kissed her forehead before tucking her in tighter and turning out the bigger lights in the room. Then, he headed back downstairs to find his wife.

"He says he didn't fight," Fred corrected, assuming that that had come up in conversation. "We didn't catch everyone that night, love. And we've got no way to really know how many fought and ran that we didn't catch afterward. Carrows are posting again in the sodding journals, that should be enough to remind us of that..."

Frowning, Verity resisted the urge to push back from Fred. "He's nothing like the Carrows," she responded, irritably. She kept telling herself that Trevor was just misguided, that he'd just been in it for himself, for his own gain, that he hadn't actually hurt anyone, but Fred was right. She only had Trevor's word to account for that.

Fred felt her tense just a bit and winced at himself. Right. Sodding sensitive about the prat still. He'd have to be more careful - the last thing he needed was to start a row with her.

"Sure, alright." He could gloss over that bit for now, anyway, to avoid it. "So, Africa then? And he's back."

Although she recognised Fred's dismissal of her assertion, she decided not to push it, for now. "That's what he said," she answered, taking another swig of her beer. "I'm not sure how long. He lives in Knockturn. Or works there, or something." She finished her beer and mused aloud, setting the bottle onto the coffee table. "I don't know why he wouldn't be living in his parents' house. I know his sister isn't."

Here was the hard part, although it shouldn't be and she pushed through it, knowing Fred wouldn't like what she was about to say. "He met Charlie."

Fred thought him being in Knockturn was suiting, at least. And at least now that they knew he was back they could keep an eye on him. He was smart enough not to say that, though.

"Dunno about the house, I guess we could look in - " he trailed off, though, as what she'd said sunk in and his mouth drew into a tight sort of line that didn't look natural at all on his usual smiling face. "Yeah?" He asked tightly.

"Yeah," Verity pulled back slightly, looking up at him, although she could picture what the expression on his face would be. She was right, there was a distinctly angry look crossing his normally happy face and Verity found her own lips tightening in response. "He is my cousin after all."

"Sure." Fred said, and he kept his voice even, but he knew she could read him - he wasn't a hard read. "He's your cousin who we know was a Snatcher. So we know worked with Death Eaters, even if he wasn't marked or fought himself. I get that he's family, Verity, but there has to be a line. You think he's a good influence?"

Sliding out of his arms and to the opposite side of the couch, Verity stared at him. "It's not like I recruited him to babysit," she shot back, knowing Fred was right and not even knowing why she was fighting this battle. It wasn't as though Trevor wanted anything to do with her. "He said hello to her."

Fred didn't really know why they were starting to fight over it either, because Verity was a great mum and he knew she'd protect Charlie from anything she could, too. Still, he didn't like the idea of the skeezy bloke around his little girl.

But what could he say to 'Hi.' He couldn't go around forbidding people to say 'Hi' to her either. Which left him a little red faced and helpless as he finished his beer in a huff.

Verity sighed, running her hand through her hair and staring across the couch at her husband. "He's my cousin, Fred," she said, after a long moment and even as she was saying the words, she hated herself for making excuses for Trevor when it was obvious he knew exactly what he was doing. "He never actually hurt anyone."

"That you know of," Fred said again, and he felt like he was beating the proverbial dead horse. She sodding well knew how he felt about it, didn't she? "And even if he didn't, it doesn't mean he wouldn't have. I know he's your family, Verity, but ... " Fred shook his head and then stood up, suddenly itching to yell and going to the kitchen for another beer instead.

All they'd done, all they'd fought for. All they'd lost. Fred couldn't accept anyone who'd stood on the other side of that line, even if it was just a toe over the line. Fred was willing to accept a lot of things, but beneath it there was right, and there was wrong, and Trevor had had a choice.

"I know," Verity folded in on herself, pulling her knees up to her chest and shaking her head. "I know, baby, but I can't help it."

She watched through the hallway to the kitchen, hearing Fred moving around in the other room. "I grew up with him," she shook her head, knowing what she was saying was ridiculous, but unable to help herself. Just because she was related to him, didn't mean he had any less potential to be evil.

"I know," Fred slammed the door to the fridge closed a little harder than he meant too, and forced himself to stop and take a breath.

"Look, I get it. I remember how hard it was when we cut Percy out, and he was just being a git. We couldn't really do it either. But with this one..." He shook his head. "You may have to, love."

"It's hard." she responded, after a moment, pushing herself off the couch and following him tentatively into the kitchen. She sighed and folded her arms across her chest, leaning against the doorjam. She wanted to argue that Trevor wouldn't influence Charlie, not with all the other people in her life, but she didn't even have the energy for it, didn't know why she was fighting for him to be in her life.

Fred took a drink that was too long, trying to think of what to say. He knew she was upset, but he had to draw a line too.

"Look, if you want to try to talk to him, be cousinly, whatever, that's alright. If you think you can be around him and not want to hex the bastard for everything we've fought for and..." He stopped his rant before he got going, obviously having a hard time reeling himself in, but managing it.

"But I don't want him around Charlie. Not for anything more than saying 'hi' or whatever. Not for any amount of actual time, you know?"

Staring at him for a moment, Verity moved her hands onto her hips. "It's alright?" she echoed, angrily. "It's alright? As though I need your permission to see my own cousin?"

Although she knew Fred hadn't meant it like that, his simmering anger towards her family (warranted as it may be), rubbed her the wrong way. "And you do realise that Charlie's just as much mine as she is yours. You think I'm going to let her get hurt? You think I wouldn't die for her?"

"Oh sodding hell, woman, I didn't mean it like that - " Fred stopped himself, realizing for a second how much he sounded like... well, his father, except not laughing. He should have been laughing. Saying it fondly. He meant it that way, but something about protecting his daugther brought out something less friendly than anything he'd ever felt.

Still, he sat his bottle down and reached for her, pulling her into his arms whether she wanted to come or not. "I know you would. That doesn't mean we have to queue up ways for you to have to though, yeah? Sorry."

As Fred drew her into his arms, Verity felt the fight go out of her. She stayed still for a long moment, pressed against him, before speaking. "Trevor wouldn't kill me," she responded, quietly, although she wasn't completely certain of that fact. "And he wouldn't hurt Charlie."

She sighed and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Can you just give him a chance, please?" she asked, after a moment, uncertain why she was fighting for Trev.

"A chance to do what?" Fred retorted, but he squeezed her too, kissed her hair. "I won't be sitting down to tea with him anytime soon, Verity. I'll not have the Order follow him everywhere he goes, and I won't have him sent to Azkaban or talk George into sending pranks to his post every day... " It was, in the end, a lot to promise.

"A chance to become better?" Verity responded, although she doubted he'd take that chance. She hugged Fred tightly, tilting her head back and moving up as though to kiss him, but stopping inches away from his mouth. "You won't send pranks to him either, will you?"

Dam her. Sodding fucking damn her. She caught him!

Fred tried to look innocent, but all it got her was a wide smile with his mouth almost touching hers. "You're quick," he said fondly, and then like it pained him added, "I won't sned him pranks either."

"I am married to you," Verity responded, moving closer and kissing him quickly. In truth, she wouldn't really mind if Fred sent pranks to Trevor. His pranks were generally innocent, but she wasn't sure how Trev would react to them. Besides, Fred could find ways around what he'd promised to her. He could have an employee of theirs send something to Trevor, or hell, even Angelina, if he was desperate. "I've had to learn."

"That you are," Fred said with a grin, trying to let go of the rest of the conversation and focus on that. They were safe, and he knew Verity wouldn't be dumb about trusting Trevor when she shouldn't, if he proved too dangerous. Fred would keep an eye on him, and that should take care of it, right?

"So, since you're my wife, and we've almost been fighting, I suppose this is the part where we get to the make up shagging, yeah?"

"Well..." Verity wound her hands around Fred's waist, sliding towards his belt. "Since we were only almost fighting, shouldn't it only be almost make up shagging?"

"Do you want me to say something very insensitive so we can really fight for a few minutes?" Fred grinned a bit wider and wagged his eyebrows at her, then leaned in and kissed her forehead, catching her hands and, a second later, sweeping her up in his arms. "Come on, wife. We're going to bed."
