WHO: Penelope Clearwater, Orsino Thruston and Seven The Canine
WHAT: Penny and Orsino spend some 'quality' time together. Penny complains loudly.
WHERE: Victoria Park, London
WHEN: April 1st 1998
WARNING/RATING/STATUS: PG-13

Violence.

That was what she was thinking about as she caught sight of the end point. Had she been able to breathe she might have let out a small sigh of relief, but every last drop of oxygen was being sucked into her lungs.

She couldn't believe that this was how she was going to go out ; it was hardly in a blaze of glory and she'd not made her contribution towards the world yet but...

Letting out a low groan, Penny fell face forward into the soft grass - cushiong herself sligtly in order not to break her nose. She lay there. Unmoving.

When he'd decided to ask Penny if she wanted to come with him when he took Seven out for a run, Orsino had honestly expected her to decline the offer. It hadn't been an empty invitation, but he remembered any past discussions on running had tended toward her showing some reluctance. He was glad she'd taken him up on it after all, but now things were coming to a close and it was dawning on him that perhaps this had been a bit much for her. At least the weather had been perfect.

As she flopped down into the grass, Orsino stood over her and contemplated her defeated form. Seven, for her part, was much more intrusive and began to viciously lick at Penny's ears, tail practically windmilling. Luckily for Penny, Seven quickly became distracted by a flock of birds and Orsino unhooked her from the lead to allow her some momentary freedom.

The spaniel sped off barking, and Orsino nudged Penny's side with the tip of his shoe before taking a seat in the grass himself and stretching his legs out. Sitting this soon was probably the last thing he should do. Still, his breathing was slowing already and he wiped the back of his hand over his forehead, displacing some of the sweat that had settling at his hairline.

He cast another sidelong glance at Penny, still largely unmoving. "Still alive?"

As she felt the spaniels freezing cold nose nudge through her hair to lick her undefended ears, Penny let out a giggle and exhaled loudly before flopping on to her side and staring at Orsino and the surrounding park.

"No," she said finally after chewing the thought around in her head for several seconds. "What are the odds of the day we plan to go for a run it actually being nice weather in London? "

Her side began aching - a dull insistant pain under her ribs that reminded her just how dreadfully unfit she actually was. "I should give up ice cream," she admitted ruefully "Or go running with people who have much shorter legs."

It didn't count that Seven's legs were that much shorter than her own - dogs had a nataraul inexhaustable supply of energy. Highly unfair.

"How was it for you?" she asked mischiviously before pushing her hair back from her neck.

Orsino cast an idle glance to where Seven had caused the birds to take flight. Now she had resigned to howling at them and jumping around in circles before galloping over to a tree. Knowing she wouldn't wander far, Orsino let out a long breath and eased back onto his elbows, propping himself up. Penny had a point - the weather was rarely this fine, especially when one actually wanted it to be.

"Ice cream has nothing to do with it," he said mildly, his right hand tearing at the grass and tossing it into a small pile. "Though I suppose if leg length is the issue you could always ask the goblins at Gringotts to come along."

He chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, you know, I hate to brag." Playfully narrowing his eyes at her, he rolled his head back and forth a few times, stretching a few kinks out.

There was a dog barking and in the distance, Penny could hear the familiar tones of a small child throwing a tantrum and traffic. Someone somewhere was playing a radio and Penny sighed happily.

It wasn't Cornwall but there was something very special about London. Being in a quiet park in the middle of the city was something Cornwall couldn't order - the closest her small town got to a traffic jam was when Old Man Tregarthen's sheep got loose and blocked the main road into St Erth.

"Do you think the goblins would really come along? I'd quite like to go running with them. But, " sucking her lower lip thoughtfully she stretched her arms above her head and tilted her head "do you think they have running shoes? I've never seen them wear anything like trainers."

Picking up a fingerful of grass, Penny sprinkled it over Orsinos prone body before smirking. "Yeah. Maybe I should just roll over and go to sleep."

"Mm, dunno. I'm sure they've got some sort of special mail order trainers for such occasions," he mused. The image of a troop of goblins jogging in a park flashed through his mind, making him grin.

Well, that, and the proximity of Penny's body stretched out next to him. His gaze wandered over to her as he flicked some of the grass off of his stomach. Most of it wound up right where it had started.

"That's a terrible idea," Orsino said, as though he were explaining an otherwise well-known fact. "If you fall asleep right now, without stretching properly, you're going to get horribly sore."

"Can I not stretch my imagination rather than my body? I think it hates me enough to go on strike."

She heard Meghan and Olivers voices in her head reminding her how important it was to cool down. Still, she didn't have to move quite yet and concentrated on tucking her knees to her chest in turn before wriggling her fingers.

"Hows work been?" she asked of Orsino. She hasn't had a chance to spend much time with him since she'd been inducted into the Order. And she was still collecting her thoughts about that.

His arms were getting tired of supporting his weight, so Orsino lay back in the grass and let his arms rest by his sides. The grass tickled the back of his neck a bit, but felt otherwise cool and oddly refreshing. For a few moments he considered Penny's question, watching Seven as she came trotting back with a stick in her mouth. She looked quite proud of herself.

Taking one end of the stick in his hand, he half-heartedly began to try to wrestle it out of the dog's mouth. She wasn't relinquishing it easily.

"Fun, actually," he eventually said, as Seven gave up on him and made her way to Penny. "We're finally working on an album again. It's still in the planning stages, really, but some of the arrangements are coming along and the tracks are more or less set."

Orsino was actually incredibly excited about it, after he'd gotten over the fact that they were treating it as a form of protest. "It's just good to be doing some new stuff again. I hate the random breaks sometimes."

"What about you though?"

A half-chewed, saliva ridden stick was dropped unceremoniously in Pennys lap and Penny began a tug of war with the dog before sneaking her hand round to scratch Seven behind her ears.

"Really? Its been a while since you guys were in the studio, right? I mean, is that what they call it - a studio?" She was going to have to pick up a book or something to get the language right. There was an entire world she knew nothing about.

"I've been good. I went to this little old ladies house to do her wards and her cat kept on setting them off as she tried to feed me - and them - cheese scones. It was certainly an experience."

Seven seemed to be enjoying the attention from Penny - Orsino was too used to the dog's antics to feel he always had to humor her, but other people tended to be more forgiving. She was still a puppy, after all. A light breeze blew through and Orsino felt quite at ease, though he noticed his foot bouncing. He rolled to his side to face Penny, the side of his face still resting against the grass.

"Yeah, it's a studio," he told her. "Though right now it's been more like hanging out at the house and trying different sounds. Studio might not be for a little while, yet. Soon, probably."

The mention of cheese scones made Orsino wonder what he ought to eat later. "You seem to meet some very peculiar sorts..." he agreed. "I hope they were good scones?" He wondered if she'd be able to tell him anything more about that breakthrough she'd had a while ago. Sometimes it seemed like a rather secretive process.

The dog leaned forward and dropped the stick in her lap before giving a very doggy grin and drooling slightly on her face. "Ewww," was Penny's reply before she picked the stick up and threw it as far as she could.

"Hrmm, a studio. You know, sometimes I think we're very lucky to be good enough at something to be able to have it as a source of income."

Turning over she leaned forward and kissed his cheek briefly before wrinkling her nose at the smell coming off of both of them.

"I do, don't I?" she confirmed with a quick grin and stretch "I love my job. Getting to meet people every day and just be a part of it for just a few hours."

The sun proving to be a bit too much on his eyes, Orsino shifted until he was lying on his stomach, and caught sight of Penny's grimace. He wasn't as concerned with post-workout smells as he was with the fact that he hated feeling like he was wearing dirty clothes. Admittedly, the sun now felt much better as it warmed his back, but it also reminded him that his t-shirt was uncomfortably damp.

Orsino waved some sort of buzzing insect out of his face and let out a long sigh, settling his chin on stacked arms. "That's true...probably never gets boring," he observed. "It's nice to get to see something completely different everyday. Kind of the way it is on tour, actually. Though I don't know if we're going to be doing that with this album."

"I don't think I could do that - the travelling, the sharing of things and living with people twenty four seven. Meghan and I did plenty of that during Hogwarts. If we weren't at school we had this inability to be apart ; I'm surprised neither of us were more sucsessful when we tried to kill one another."

Picking up a blade of grass, she dusted it quickly to make sure that no bugs were lurking before cupping it in her hands and blowing.

"D'you not think you'll be doing a tour?," It wasn't that she didn't want him to go - quite the contrary, but the thought of Orsino being away for weeks perhaps even months at a time was, well. It brought home the fact that she would miss him.

"I think a tour would be a lot of hard work. Though you know, I might actually catch one of your gigs and risk meeting Don face to face if you wore those leather trousers you mentioned earlier..."

"I guess you sort of get used to it, though it's definitely a lot harder to get time to yourself," Orsino said. That was something he really didn't like about touring, even if it was otherwise highly enjoyable. "But with all the stuff that's happening I'm not sure if we want to tour with this one or not. We haven't really discussed it yet, though, so who knows. Things may have changed by then..."

He trailed off, not really liking to think about the more serious implications of just why a tour might be difficult. Most days the wizarding world seemed like it was about to collapse in on itself. Going a concert was unlikely to be the first thing on most people's minds, though given the nature of the album, doing so might be seen as a form of protest in itself. Something to think about.

Looking sidelong at Penny, Orsino grinned slightly. "Ohh, that's right, you're not a fan, are you?" he teased, then made a face at the mention of leather trousers. "Although I assure you there are no leather trousers involved. Really." The truth of this statement was up for debate. "But I'm sure Don wouldn't be able to contain his joy."

To be honest, Orsino hadn't given much thought to how this thing between him and Penny would go when he eventually did do things like touring again. Assuming they were still together. Which, he realized, he hoped they would be.

"Hmm, and time by yourself is good."

She blew long and hard around the grass and was rewarded with a sound that was both embarrassing and entertaining. Penny rarely managed to get a sound to come from the blade of grass but had heard of an entire orchestra made up of unusual objects.

"Did you know there's an orchestra made from vegetables?"

As she shifted around on the grass, Penny leaned forward and rolled the tops of her socks down further down to cool her legs against the warming sun.

"If I show up, would you wear the trousers? I know they exist somewhere. I can be indoctrinated into the erm," Penny racked her brains to come up with the name of one of their songs. They were a magical band and there was a high likelihood that a song involved either a spell or a magical animal.

"The Hinkypunk Whirl." Confident in her answer she beamed at him.

"What trousers?" he said innocently, trying for a diversion as he reached over and tickled the underside of her thigh playfully.

Penny's attempt at naming a plausible song falling flat on its face, Orsino had a had time not laughing at it. He wondered what exactly would be involved in a "hinkypunk whirl". It sounded possibly horrifying.

"Nice try there, by the way," muttered Orsino. He sat up, snickering, and saw that Seven was entertaining herself by digging a hole. His tone indicated feigned shock. "You must be thinking of another and clearly far superior band. I'm insulted. You are so not invited to the shows anymore"

"Uhuh," Penny said with as straight a face as she could manage before sliding her thigh away from his roaming hands. She didn't do well with being tickled.

"Thanks," she told him with a bright grin "I think it sounds like a great song. The hinkypunk whirl - a mixture of punk and the sort of thing you'd do at a Troyl. "

"You can dance, right? Or am I going to have to show you the geese dance? And really? No more shows?" She managed only a few seconds before her pout dissolved into peals of laughter "You'll break Dons heart."

Orsino rolled his eyes, but the lingering smile ruined any attempt to seem unamused. "I'll break his heart? Too late for that, I'm afraid. We never talk about those days anymore, it's too painful." He pouted. "You, however, are on the road to permanently wounding his delicate emotions."

Making as though he'd come to a difficult decision, he sighed loudly and slumped. "Fiiine, for the sake of Don's precious little heart, I suppose you'll have to make some kind of attendance quota, if you want."

Seven came trotting back, her snout and forepaws thoroughly begrimed. With little ceremony she flopped down near Orsino with a very doggy huff. She set her head on his leg determinedly, knowing full well minimal use of the Puppy Eyes was required before he'd scratch her behind the ears. Sure enough, Orsino gave in and started scratching the dog's head.

"You are talking to someone who was born with incredible natural rhythm. I can dance perfectly fine. I just prefer not to," he said teasingly.
