Who: Draco & Theo
What: The time has come to talk of other things - like thestrals
Where: Dorm rooms
When: Late evening

Writing that letter to the Ministry had sent Theo into some kind of depressed cloud, although it was difficult to tell against his usual mannerisms. No one really looked hard enough to be able to decipher his mood anyway. Well, Greg may have done but Theo hadn't seen him around at all lately.

He felt like he'd sold out and even reminding himself that he'd only used flattery and claimed support in order to manipulate them into checkmate didn't ease the dirty feeling inside. He didn't even know if his efforts would be fruitful yet either - at the time he'd worked himself up into what he privately called his 'Future Lord of Nott Estate' head, faked himself out with the weight of his heritage behind him, the links his father had to the Dark Lord, and this had all made him feel, made him believe as though they'd have no choice but to heed his words and return the thestrals.

It was only after he'd sent the thing that he thought back on it, let go of that mindset and was hit by the backlash, the teenage angsting hangover. He was nothing but a kid, some snot-nosed student at a school the Ministry clearly had a grudge against and what's more, what if they could tell he was lying from the letter? His paranoia heightened and he imagined that Ministry officials (or unofficials) were around each corner and behind every creak.

Theo had taken hyper-awareness to PTSD levels (and wasn't that a telling comment) so that even when he was lying on his bed - head to the door of course - he was still aware of every footstep outside. He looked tired, though he didn't really know it. He still wasn't sleeping properly and things were starting to tell on him a little.

"So much so that people can't tell the echo anymore." he agreed, slightly pessimistic. Merlin he was tired. And he wondered vaguely why Draco hadn't magicked his clothes clean... oh well.

If he'd asked, Draco would have pointed out that that was elves' work. He'd clean his clothes himself if he had to, if something happened to dirty them during the day or something, but not as a general rule.

"Aren't you always echoing?" He asked instead, at least a little more invested in the question than he had been.

"Always." Theo affirmed confidently, though it begged the question as to who Theo was echoing. It was rarely his father and even when it was he did it with more awareness about what he was saying than he usually possessed.

"Ought to watch that, then," Draco settled back onto his bed and picked up the book that he'd been not reading the night before - it was always more of flipping through pages, now, than actually paying attention. His mind was too scattered, worried about what was coming, to focus on the story. "You know what happened to her."

"Mhm." Theo made a sound of agreement. "Lucky bitch." Out of character... possibly. Theo was losing track of, not so much who he was, but who he was supposed to be being.

"Well, we could find you a cave if you'd like, and someone appropriately vain, but you'll have to do the wasting away bit on your own." Draco stretched a bit, but closed the book he had only been pretending to read, putting it back beneath the edge of his bed. "Honestly, Nott, what's on with you?"

"I'm irritated about dinner. They just didn't have what I wanted the way I wanted it." He wasn't about to believe that Draco wanted to get into real conversation when just minutes ago he'd decried such a thing existed.

Draco wasn't quite sure if he'd been angling for a real answer or not, but the false on he got annoyed him, though he wasn't sure why, and he didn't answer - just rolled his eyes, and pulled the curtains closed around his bed with a definitive, annoyed, yank.

Theo sighed a little, noiselessly. Despite his conviction that Draco wasn't at all interested in the answer it was still disheartening to be proven right.
