Who: Draco & Theo
What: The time has come to talk of other things - like thestrals
Where: Dorm rooms
When: Late evening

Writing that letter to the Ministry had sent Theo into some kind of depressed cloud, although it was difficult to tell against his usual mannerisms. No one really looked hard enough to be able to decipher his mood anyway. Well, Greg may have done but Theo hadn't seen him around at all lately.

He felt like he'd sold out and even reminding himself that he'd only used flattery and claimed support in order to manipulate them into checkmate didn't ease the dirty feeling inside. He didn't even know if his efforts would be fruitful yet either - at the time he'd worked himself up into what he privately called his 'Future Lord of Nott Estate' head, faked himself out with the weight of his heritage behind him, the links his father had to the Dark Lord, and this had all made him feel, made him believe as though they'd have no choice but to heed his words and return the thestrals.

It was only after he'd sent the thing that he thought back on it, let go of that mindset and was hit by the backlash, the teenage angsting hangover. He was nothing but a kid, some snot-nosed student at a school the Ministry clearly had a grudge against and what's more, what if they could tell he was lying from the letter? His paranoia heightened and he imagined that Ministry officials (or unofficials) were around each corner and behind every creak.

Theo had taken hyper-awareness to PTSD levels (and wasn't that a telling comment) so that even when he was lying on his bed - head to the door of course - he was still aware of every footstep outside. He looked tired, though he didn't really know it. He still wasn't sleeping properly and things were starting to tell on him a little.

Since the clandestine meeting with Snape, Draco had been even more on edge as he waited for the other shoe to drop, but looking through the journals for the past few days had certainly given him at least something to laugh at. Distract himself. The idea of Nott on a tear through the Ministry looking for invisible ponies, for instance, was quite a good laugh.

By the time he came into the dorm room, however, he was past laughing. Tense again, worried, he hid it behind a sneer and a worse attitude than usual. That Nott was the only other of their dormmates in the room so far went a bit toward making it easier, at least. If he was about with Greg and Vince, the only ones he truly thought were going to take the Mark and follow him in on his orders, it would have been more of a headache.

"Nott," he said, tugging off his tie and stepping out of his shoes. "Still babbling?"

Theo had clocked Draco coming in and had deemed him to be no threat, despite the fact that he tensed a little more in case he had to move fast and knew that his wand was where it always was, within striking distance in the blink of an eye.

He gave Draco a thoroughly unimpressed look before he answered, after a beat. "Yes." There couldn't have been more sarcasm in a single word unless that word had actually been sarcasm. "I'd ask if you were still woefully unaware but then I already know the answer to that."

Draco rolled his eyes, sitting down on the edge of his bed and staring over at Nott. He debated whether or not he should give him a real answer, and settled on doing so just because he couldn't see the harm.

"Not as oblivious as all of that, but I was wondering what exactly one could do to prostitute themselves for a cause like invisible horses."

"Oh, fuck me." Theo almost snarled suddenly turning onto his back and slinging an arm across his face, covering his eyes. He'd just had enough in that moment, enough of everything and he was so fucking tired, of the struggle to stay above water, the bickering, the banter, the constant mindgames with his father and just fucking tired because he'd had no fucking sleep lately. "I got down on my knees and sucked off the Minister and some of his friends." he plainly lied, out of character for him to be so vulgar.

Out of character enough that Draco blinked at him, not at all sure about how to respond. Not only did Nott usually not speak that way - no one generally spoke that way to him. It was unsettling.

"I see..." He said slowly, still not sure how to respond.

Theo felt it building up on him behind the backs of his eyes, but he took a deep sigh of a breath and let it out, let his frustration out with it and relaxed back into that grey, neutral, emotionless area he spent so much time in these days. Things were easier when he didn't care so much. He said nothing and waited for Draco to either fling an insult his way or leave.

Draco thought for a moment, then cleared his throat. "As I suspect that was neither a true story, nor a legitimate offer, at least I hope not on either count, is there something that you actually did?" Draco would go to sleep with the idea of Theodore servicing the Minister, and since he'd met the Minister before that was entirely too terrifying to consider.

Theo wasn't expecting that from Draco and the fact that it was so unexpected put his back up. Even then, he just... couldn't.

"There is." he said, still hiding from the world under his arm. He probably wouldn't have moved to save himself had Draco suddenly come at him with a wand and an AK. "It did not involve sexual favors." Although Theo felt, sickly, that he might have felt less dirty about it than he did now.

"I would certainly hope not, have you ever met Thicknesse?" Draco suppressed a shiver, and shook his head.

"It is really about the thestrals? Why are they that important to you, then?" Draco didn't understand connections to animals at all. He'd actually liked the idea that the Minstry was having Professor Weasley ship everything off.

Theo inclined his head a little because yeah he had and he could agree that the idea was repulsive, even though he'd said it himself.

He was surprised despite himself at Draco's question, firstly that Draco would ask at all and secondly that he hadn't figured out by now that few things kept Theo going and that one of these was the thestrals. How to explain that to Draco without exposing it as a weakness? Usually Theo wouldn't care, but he was feeling particularly vulnerable and it made him second guess everything. "I got used to having them around." he decided, although that gave more away than he would have liked.

Then again, it didn't give away anymore than the letter he'd written had done, so he didn't know why he was worrying.

Draco considered that, He'd never really thought about what the fact that Nott could actually see the things implied.

"I suppose they're better than beasts that everyone can see," He offered, almost haltingly, but very much with the air of someone who didn't quite care about what he was saying.

Theo moved his arm down from his face and turned to look at Draco, his expression, well, not there. "Why." he asked in that plain way he had when he was being a functioning person but wasn't actually there himself.

"Well, generally because you can't see them." Draco explained, finishing with a shrug and then standing up, going to get his bed clothes from his wardrobe.

"Why does that make them better." he clarified, watching the ceiling and not Draco, although he was always aware of where Draco was standing.

"Because they're far less annoying than those you can see? Honestly, Nott, I'm only talking to talk. This isn't a real conversation." Draco wondered if they'd ever actually had a real conversation, at that.

"Of course it isn't." Theo said in the same tone, the same style as he had been. "What's a real conversation?"

Draco paused, then pulled off his shirt before pulling on the other. "Honestly, I don't know that I'm at all sure of what that means anymore. Not here, at least. Everyone who shouldn't seems to be strained over something." It was a hell of a way to end their Hogwarts' careers.

Draco shrugged again, stripping off his trousers and then finishing dressing for bed. He folded the dirty things and put them in the sack for the elves, then sat down again. "Well, I've had quite a lot of practice. So have you, by the way."

"So much so that people can't tell the echo anymore." he agreed, slightly pessimistic. Merlin he was tired. And he wondered vaguely why Draco hadn't magicked his clothes clean... oh well.

If he'd asked, Draco would have pointed out that that was elves' work. He'd clean his clothes himself if he had to, if something happened to dirty them during the day or something, but not as a general rule.

"Aren't you always echoing?" He asked instead, at least a little more invested in the question than he had been.

"Always." Theo affirmed confidently, though it begged the question as to who Theo was echoing. It was rarely his father and even when it was he did it with more awareness about what he was saying than he usually possessed.

"Ought to watch that, then," Draco settled back onto his bed and picked up the book that he'd been not reading the night before - it was always more of flipping through pages, now, than actually paying attention. His mind was too scattered, worried about what was coming, to focus on the story. "You know what happened to her."

"Well, we could find you a cave if you'd like, and someone appropriately vain, but you'll have to do the wasting away bit on your own." Draco stretched a bit, but closed the book he had only been pretending to read, putting it back beneath the edge of his bed. "Honestly, Nott, what's on with you?"

"I'm irritated about dinner. They just didn't have what I wanted the way I wanted it." He wasn't about to believe that Draco wanted to get into real conversation when just minutes ago he'd decried such a thing existed.

Draco wasn't quite sure if he'd been angling for a real answer or not, but the false on he got annoyed him, though he wasn't sure why, and he didn't answer - just rolled his eyes, and pulled the curtains closed around his bed with a definitive, annoyed, yank.

Theo sighed a little, noiselessly. Despite his conviction that Draco wasn't at all interested in the answer it was still disheartening to be proven right.
