Death felt peaceful. Ash was never afraid of it, in fact he always knew that sooner or later everything that made up his world would catch up to him. It was why he tried so hard to keep Eiji out of it. The more he pushed, the deeper Eiji dug himself in until Ash couldn't push anymore. His only choice was to keep Eiji as close as possible, no matter how dangerous it was. If that was the case, only he could keep Eiji safe. Only when he got what he wanted and Eiji was going to return to Japan did he realize that there could be more. More than his legacy shadowed by tragedy and danger. Too bad that fate rarely favored him.
You wouldn't need a gun in Japan.
Eiji said something like that to him more than once. Ash insisted at first that it just couldn't happen with no real reason why besides he didn't expect to make it out of exposing Golzine alive. There was no use getting Eiji's hopes up when he wasn't going to make it that far. Ash didn't want him to be there when that happened either, but Eiji wouldn't take no for an answer. Even when he was cold toward him and showed Eiji the absolute worst of who he was, that stubborn, adorable Japanese dummy just wouldn't let go. It made Eiji concerned for him. For the life of him he didn't understand how Eiji could see him as anything more than a monster. Someone who earned the mutters of scandal behind hands. A murderer. The stink of death would always cling to him... and he didn't want to taint someone as innocent as Eiji that way.
When Ash woke up, he was met with the too familiar antiseptic, artificial scent of a hospital room. The beeping of a heart monitor. Where was he? His head was aching. He already knew the lights would sting, doing nothing to help that, so he kept them closed, listening instead. There was a TV on in the background.
The temperature today is sitting at a chilly thirty-seven today in Dunwich with a ten percent chance of late night snowfall. The rest of the week is looking...
Dunwich? His body tensed at the unfamiliarity, trying to place where he heard of a city with that name before, or if. He still kept his eyes closed. There was another piece of paper, tucked in with Eiji's letter that seemed out of place. It was printed and the paper was slightly different. He only just started reading about a chance to start over when the pain snapped him back to reality. If Eiji wouldn't be there, he didn't want to go. He kept reading as his vision blurred. Where was Winterdale anyway? You need to go there. He had to be dying, Griffin was talking to him. Why did he need to? He knew better than to accept offers that sounded too good to be true, it was always some sort of trap be one means or another. Always some catch. Trust me, Aslan. Of anyone in his whole life, he could count the number of people he truly trusted with just his fingers. He still wasn't sure, maybe he was afraid of dying, if only because he still needed to tell Eiji...
He wasn't dead, at least not anymore. The lynx jumps out of the clutches of death once again. He wasn't sure how to feel about that yet. His body felt numb, along with his head throbbing. He hated hospitals. Being in one meant either he was at his worst or someone he cared about was. They were always too cold and the food was shit. That was all trivial in comparison to needing to know what being here meant... and finding a way to leave. Any way. If Eiji wasn't here, another shot at living wasn't worth it. Lifting a heavy hand to brush his hair back, Ash finally opened his eyes. As expected, the light stung his eyes.
"Doctor, he's waking up!"

He couldn't have taken off from the hospital at that very moment, sheer force of will or no, but at least now he knew more. This place was insane, but he was of a sound enough mind to take in facts when given to him... and to spot even the best liars. How or truly where this country existed, he didn't know. People appeared here constantly from other places. From a simple perspective and considering personal experience, it could sound a lot like dying. Life after death. But it seemed most people didn't come here on the brink of death. There were pieces of the puzzle missing, but only one thing really mattered: if for once fate might smile on him and somehow Eiji was here.
"Ei-ji O-ku-mu-ra," he repeated, for the third nurse now, with steadily growing irritation. Three days and two before that in and out of consciousness. He wasn't known for being patient, but he'd really pushed his body to the limit this time. He felt crappy after the transfusion, since he'd bled out so much before showing up here, not to mention fighting off all those piece of shit old men. Done in by a punk on the street. Him of all people. Heh...
"Yes, dear, I'll take a look for you." He could tell that she wanted to say more, more than likely ask him why he wouldn't use the network they'd explained to him a couple of days prior. If he could show up here and so many others could, it reasoned that anyone could. He didn't need his name out there in flashing lights on the internet just yet, even in a country that didn't exist. Looking himself wasn't out of the question, the nurses just didn't like watching him flit between calculating and anguished when he did. He'd heard them whisper about it being unsettling like watching an animal in a cage. That description would stick to him through any life.
"Hey! Are you going to let me go for a walk yet? I'm sick of this bed..." Huffing, he crossed his arms over his chest. They barely let him move without watching him like hawks, but that was his own fault. He had to say, the security in this hospital could actually boast being top notch. He didn't even make it off the floor. The nurse who appeared at the door was a different one, short and slender in appearance, but he knew from personal experience there was more to her than met the eye.
"Are you going to behave yourself? The doctors won't be happy if they have to stitch you up again..." Her face seemed innocent, sweet like you would expect of a nurse... but her eyes. Something in them unsettled even Ash and he nodded, leaning back into his pillows. He had to be smarter about his scouting this time. To his dismay, they gave him an escort, but at least he was out of that room. Most floors would have a similar layout, he knew he was on the second, but had only seen the ward he was in. He noted service areas and where the halls branched out into other areas of the hospital. It was better to let old habits die hard and be prepared for a necessary escape than end up off his guard again.
The nurses usually tried to small chat with him, find out where he came from and how he managed to get into the condition that he was and were disappointed when he refused to provide an answer. He didn't want their looks his way to be filled with any more pity than they already were. He was young and handsome, what could be so terrible he refused to speak a word of it? They had no idea and they didn't want to know. If he was making a new start, he would rather leave all that behind.
"Thank you for behaving yourself." The nurse left him at the doorway, giving him a look before walking away. He didn't miss the smile. They did actually worry for him, it was almost cruel for him to be such a pain in return.
"Sure, we'll have to do it again soon," he allowed a smile, but only once she turned her back to him. That was when Ash noticed the tablet sitting on the lap table over his bed.
You should check this in neat writing, with a curvy signature of one of the other nurses at the end. "Hm?" He picked up the tablet, half expecting to find some message - or worse - from the nurse personally, but it was already opened to the network. Ash frowned some to himself until he read the post at the top of the page... then his heart stopped. Eiji.

The time he waited felt like it stretched forever. Ash fiddled with those slightly crumpled pages he was clutching when he was found. The letter from Eiji was worn from being repeatedly unfolded even after just a few days, streaked with blood, but still able to be read. I know we will see each other again someday. Ash brushed his fingers over those words like something precious. He never believed in a fate beyond eventually being his own destruction. For a flicker of a moment, he believed in the thought of Japan. Of going there and being with Eiji. Being a cynic these past days, considering what he would do if Eiji didn't show up... or how long he should or even could wait. Maybe it was fate, keeping him here in this hospital. From doing something stupid. His IQ may have been 200, but emotion ruled over him unlike anything else. They could turn him into a seemingly perfect angel... or a demon.
When it came to Eiji, Ibe was right. It was the only time Ash looked his age. Carefree. Ash would only allow it to show through in flickers, when he thought no one else was paying attention. He learned the price of letting someone see your weakness. Physically, even mentally, if you attacked Ash directly, he had very few. Target those around him and you may as well ask to dance with the devil himself. Up until now, Ash's attitude had been less than pleasant unless the nurses made it clear they were tired of his crap. Then he'd quiet down some, read a book. Be slightly less of a nuisance. Gorgeous but with a bad attitude was another common description that stuck to him through his life.
He asked to be unhooked from from everything before Eiji got there because he didn't need to be restricted with this mess in the way. He felt fine, even if it was through a rush at seeing Eiji... he didn't need anything else. He didn't want Eiji to worry any more than necessary either, not that it could really be helped. He waited with sharp green eyes on the door that only softened at the sight of the dark haired boy who took him for everything that he was.
