The gift exchange was in full swing by the time his siblings excused themselves to visit with friends and familiar faces that had approached them. Auggie, not having permanent roots in the town for quite some time, was suddenly left to his own devices. He ordered another cup of hot chocolate since none of the alcoholic beverages that were being served would do much to give him a buzz and threaded his way through the crowd to stand near a less crowded area of the coffeeshop. As he stood there, occasionally sipping his drink, Auggie's attention to detail started to kick in as he had nothing else to do except stand there and feel like the odd man out. Despite wearing a dark gray blazer over a moss green tee and gray jeans, Auggie felt exposed without Kyle at his side, who had always acted as his security blanket, of a sort, at large gatherings such as this.
