There were both good and bad things about being in criminal defense. Zelia loved when she could defend someone who'd been wrongly accused of crimes, and help them to get out of trouble. She enjoyed knowing that her hard work paid off in ways both big and small in people's lives. She even enjoyed when she knew that a client had done something wrong, but she could get them lesser time. But she wasn't a monster. There were people who deserved everything they got. Cases that were lost because it was right that they were. And sometimes she knew about people, even if they weren't clients. Which was sometimes a bad thing (she didn't need to know about some of them). Some cases she excused herself from long before she heard all of the details. But there was some small saving grace to it all. The fact that she knew people who knew people who knew terrible people meant that sometimes, someone was getting out of jail that shouldn't and she got a call.
At times, she filed the information away, watched the news and listened carefully to see if things happened that might be tied to that person. And sometimes, she did what she was doing today. As soon as she hung up the phone from the call, she asked her secretary (the office secretary, honestly, not hers exclusively) to please tell anyone who called that she was out at a meeting, and then she lifted her cell phone out of her purse and called August McKenna. It wasn't the first time she'd had to tell him things like this, but every time made her just as anxious as she was now.
As the phone connected, she swung her foot and tapped it lightly against the floor. Anything to let out the energy that was flowing through her right now.
