Alisdair rolled his body away from the edge of the bed and covered his head with a pillow, groaning a bit as he heard his phone ringing again. He'd told Penny exactly what was happening when he text her last. Which meant that he was going to have to stick by his guns, otherwise she was going to be absolutely impossible to deal with later. It was already a foregone conclusion they were going to the carnival, especially since it would be a solid place to scope a few marks and lighten a few pockets. Plus, she wasn't going to let it go..at all. So, he just had to put it off long enough to make her work a little bit and not seem like a complete push-over. It was nearly impossible for her not to try and run with any amount of momentum she got, so there was always the song and dance. But, he couldn't deny it would be nice to get out for a bit and do some stuff. And she was funny, so there was no reason to really not go. Given, he'd been able to crunch in a few hours of sleep after he'd run some errands of his own and cased a few places in case he ever needed some quick cash. But the Syndicate provided well enough for him, no telling how well it mixed with the royalties Penny got.
It had never been something he asked about, even when they were in Seattle or Portland. Living hand-to-mouth had never bothered Dare, so when he didn't have to steal food or worry about cops..well, it was just a perk. How much many she had or was worth had never factored into the equation of their relationship, it was one of the reasons they had always gotten along. Or a semblance of getting along.
Again, he fought the urge to reach beneath the bed and throw the phone against the wall. Just don't answer, Dare. You'll need the phone for later and she'll eventually have to cave. And then things won't be as bad as they could have been. Thoughts of the carnival reminded him briefly of the pier, which had been a source of many hours of entertainment for the two of them. Back before they had any real obligations. Any directives he'd been given were few and far between, which left the vast majority of their time up to them to fill. Of course, now he was in Seagram Tower, so it was never a sure thing to have a day free. But it wasn't all bad. Definitely not as bad as Penny made it out to be some days.
When he heard his door slowly creak open and then slam shut, he fought the urge to smile. Instead, he prepared himself for all sorts of Penelope Lane Persuasion--which meant pouncing, shaking, whining, and possible darklings.
