After reassuring John she and the baby would be all right, Fred adjusted her pack and left their quarters. She made her way down to the lab, where Rodney was getting some of the crystals ready. She helped him put them, along with some sensitive equipment, in a special container and went to the Gate room with him. Lorne, Jennifer and Weir were already there. "You guys ready?" Fred asked them.
Soon the Gate was open and all of them walked through it. The planet they arrived at was very much like Earth except it was completely deserted. There was vast vegetation and every once and a while, you could hear an animal making a noise. It almost had a creepy feeling to it and it made Fred a little uneasy.
"How did you find this planet, Doctor Weir?" Jennifer asked as they walked in a single file, with Lorne in the back.
"While all of you were gone, I did some research on the planets we know of in the galaxy, and ones with Gates. Since this one is so close to being like Earth, I thought we could do some testing here. If we can figure out a way to adjust the crystals, we could almost use them on Earth, too," she explained as they continued down a dirt path.
"As long as there aren't any creepy bugs or anything here. I'm allergic to alien bugs," Rodney said with a shudder. He pulled out his scanner and started to use it to find a good place to set up the equipment.
Fred snorted and shook her head. "What aren't you allergic to, Rodney?" she asked. She pulled out her own scanner and continued to walk, being mindful of where she stepped. The terrain was a little uneven and the last thing she wanted to do was twist her ankle or fall.
They walked for a good ten minutes before finding the perfect spot to set up the equipment to test the crystals. Before they started, Weir handed out the food she'd brought with her and they took a small rest to eat. Fred sat by Jennifer and grilled her about Ronon. The other woman seemed rather tight-lipped about it, and Fred figured it was because Rodney and Weir was there. Rodney tended to be a big mouth about things and they hadn't spent enough time with Weir to tell her things about their personal lives.
"Well, lets get this started," Rodney said as he stood. Fred stood also and helped him. Once everything was finished, Fred pulled out the video camera she'd brought and started to film the test. Rodney was about to turn everything on when the ground started to shake.
"What was that?" Lorne asked as he pulled out his gun.
The ground shook again and a loud roar pierced the silence. Fred caught sight of something large and gray in the trees in front of her. She was about to point it out to Lorne when the ground shook again. The trees rustled and Fred stepped back as Lorne, who had obviously seen what she had, started to shoot at it. Another roar sounded and she heard Rodney behind her.
"What in the hell..? Is that...?"
Using the camera, Fred looked up and gasped. Standing near there was what looked a...dinosaur. Her heart started to pound in her chest and she suddenly felt sick to her stomach. "Oh my god," she whispered as Lorne continued to shoot at it.
"We need to get out of here! Now!" Weir yelled.
Fred snapped the camera shut and slipped it into one of the pockets of her vest as she started to run toward the Gate with the others. She couldn't remember how long they'd run when Jennifer looked behind her and started to scream. Fred turned around and saw the monster had caught Weir in its mouth and was tossing her around. Lorne pulled out his gun and shot at it again, which caused the monster to drop the doctor.
"Doctor Weir!" Jennifer exclaimed as she ran forward. Fred and Rodney ran over to to see how badly the other doctor was hurt.
The monster suddenly roared and took a swipe at Fred but before it could, Rodney was knocking her to the ground, and shielding her. Fred fell hard to the ground and landed on her wrist. She grimaced in pain and stiffened a little when she heard Rodney. "Rodney?" she asked.
"I-I'm fine. Just a scratch," he muttered before rolling off her. There was blood seeping through his vest.
Fred slowly stood, her wrist throbbing and she looked at Jennifer. The monster was still there but Lorne was distracted it. "Is she--."
"She's dead," Jennifer quietly said.
Lorne shot off a flare, which the monster seemed to be more interested in and it lumbered off to follow it. He then turned and looked at the others before he helped Rodney up. "We need to get out of here," he said.
"What about Doctor Weir?" Jennifer cried, her cheeks wet with tears. "We can't leave her here!"
"We'll come back for her. Come on!" Lorne ordered.
Suddenly, there was another roar and the four of them started toward the Gate. Fear ran through Fred and she felt sick to her stomach. They couldn't be happening. Weir was dead. She'd been killed by some sort of dinosaur. This wasn't normal. As they hurried back toward the Gate, she could hear Jennifer crying and she wanted to reach out and comfort her friend but her wrist was burning in pain.
"This is Major Lorne," Lorne said as he touched his earpiece. "We need medical and Colonel Sheppard to meet us in the Gate room."
When they got to the Gate, Lorne dialed it and when it opened, all of them hurried through.
"What happened?" Carson asked as he ran up to take Rodney, who was about to pass out, from Lorne. "What in the hell happened? Where's Weir?"
"She's dead," Jennifer said as she started to cry.
