If you'd told Steven Grant Rogers that, someday, all this would happen? He might have believed it. He might have believed that Tony Stark, in a fit of absolute arrogance, had done the unthinkable. He might have believed that the world was ending and, rather than face it together, a portion of his family had splintered off to work in secret. He might have believed that they could have murdered a world without thinking, that they could have stolen his memories and, by means he didn't think he'd ever explain, had somehow shuffled him off to a different reality. What he never would have believed is that there was even a moment where he might have been alright with that. As it was, he knew Tony Stark was here, or at least some version of him. Steve had done enough of his homework to know just who was in this town and who wasn't. He knew Logan was here too, though the man seemed to be avoiding him for reasons he could only imagine were valid. He knew there was a mess of people who, by rights, Steve should have been calling together. He wasn't, and he had a very good reason for that. That reason? That reason was the woman who'd said hello to him over the network here. She was the woman who, long ago, had proven herself impossible. She was the woman who'd pulled him back from the brink, the woman who'd fought tooth and nail to bring him back to the land of the living. The woman who was, without any doubt, alive and well in this place. Who was she? She was the Sharon Carter. Steve had practically been beside himself at first, unable to say much to her at all even when they'd gone out for a run with the other him -- a fact that wasn't nearly as strange it probably should have been. Frankly, Steve had been so preoccupied with trying not to trip over himself while he just stared at her that there simply wasn't much else to do. From there, he'd agonized over just how to approach it. Would she even want to talk to him? What about everything that had happened that she was undoubtedly going to ask him about? Could he even answer any of that. The truth was remarkably simple: No matter what talking to her meant facing, he'd be talking to her. There wasn't a price in the world Steve hadn't promised to pay for that chance and, considering he had the opportunity here, he wasn't about to not take the shot. It's how he'd come to message her, how the two had struck up a dialogue and how now Steve was nervously fidgeting with the lapels of the suit jacket he'd purchased for just the occasion. Finally, with an old fashioned clearing of his throat to give him the confidence, Steve Roger lifted his hand and rapped lightly against her door. |
