Why would they be looking at my shoes?
Who: Zadkiel Thrush and Katherine Athena
When: Sunday, May 16, 2096, 2 pm
Where: Ray's Boathouse
What: Zadkiel meets with Katherine to discuss a few things.
Status: Closed, Complete

Zadkiel had every intention of getting to Ray's Boathouse early, but the city continued to defeat his sense of direction (which he'd always thought of as being quite good), and he only just barely made it on time.

He stepped inside and walked up to the podium where a man in a suit stood, looking down his nose. The man looked him up and down, taking in his slightly wrinkled jacket, khakis with the discolored bottoms (even though he'd just washed them) and his Converse sneakers. He hesitated long enough that Zadkiel started to feel uncomfortable.

"I'm here to meet with Katherine Athena?" he managed. "Sir," he added belatedly.

"This way," the man said, leading him into the dining room. Zadkiel followed obediently, his eyes just ahead of him, feeling terribly conspicuous.

"It's my pleasure. I'd hoped to speak with all of you at one time or another." She relaxed in her chair, resting her napkin on her lap and folding her hands. There was no one in the restaurant yet, the hours being what they were but she thought no reason to risk it. Picking up her glass, she sipped at the water for a moment.

"Why..." Zadkiel took a breath, let it out slowly, trying to calm his nerves. "Why, if you hoped to speak to all of us, did you have us all come together? In a group of strangers, it seems unlikely anyone could truly ask all of what was on their mind. And then that other woman." He stopped himself. It wouldn't be right to say anything rude about her companion, co-worker, whoever she was.

"I needed to know who would come, who might commit to what they were being asked," Katherine said simply. "You learn different things from people when they're in a group than you do when they're with you, alone. How they interact, for instance."

He nodded, picked up his glass of water and sipped, glad that his hands weren't shaking like he'd feared they would. He hadn't even looked at the menu yet. The sheer number of utensils on the table let him know he was in over his head. He'd never been to a restaurant in his life before coming to Seattle, and even now this was the first time he'd been anywhere where the wait staff didn't wear polyester, name tags, and call everyone 'hon'.

He finally looked at the list of entrees, needing something to keep himself from blurting out the question that had been rolling around in his head, louder than any other thought, for more than a week now. His eyes went wide when he saw the prices.

Katherine gently leaned over and placed a napkin over the column of prices. "It's my treat. Do you know the last time I had dinner out with a friend that didn't turn into a press conference?" The lines at the corner of her eyes crinkled with her smile, slight though it was.

She crossed her ankles, relaxing as she picked up her glass again. She made a note not to actually show him the wine menu. "Is there anything you like particularly? Fish? Vegetarian food? Seafood tends to be a specialty here but the tenderloin is fabulous."

Friend? Were they friends?

"I'm used to two things being served for any given meal," he said, his voice still soft. "Take it, or leave it." One corner of his mouth quirked, almost a smile.

Katherine laughed at that. "My father was like that." She didn't mention that there had been considerably more options at their table than she suspected Zadkiel had seen.

"Shall I order a starter then while you think about it?" She suggested politely, her eyes fixing on his hands. There were calluses on his fingers, the skin cracked in some places, yet his nails were neatly trimmed. It suggested promise.

He nodded his agreement, and was quiet while she did so. Once the waiter had walked away, he looked up again. "Have you met with many of the others?" he asked.

"You're the first," she said. "Which means that you get to ask the hard questions."

"I really only have one question," he said, his voice dropping. "Or, I suppose it's two. But it's all of a piece to me." Now that he had the chance to ask, he found the words weren't so easy to get out. He opened and closed his mouth several times before he blurted, "How did you find me? How much do you know?"

"How did I find you?" Her mouth pressed together for a moment. "And how much do I know? The first is easily answered, the second not so much. How much do I know about what?"
