Why would they be looking at my shoes?
Who: Zadkiel Thrush and Katherine Athena
When: Sunday, May 16, 2096, 2 pm
Where: Ray's Boathouse
What: Zadkiel meets with Katherine to discuss a few things.
Status: Closed, Complete

Zadkiel had every intention of getting to Ray's Boathouse early, but the city continued to defeat his sense of direction (which he'd always thought of as being quite good), and he only just barely made it on time.

He stepped inside and walked up to the podium where a man in a suit stood, looking down his nose. The man looked him up and down, taking in his slightly wrinkled jacket, khakis with the discolored bottoms (even though he'd just washed them) and his Converse sneakers. He hesitated long enough that Zadkiel started to feel uncomfortable.

"I'm here to meet with Katherine Athena?" he managed. "Sir," he added belatedly.

"This way," the man said, leading him into the dining room. Zadkiel followed obediently, his eyes just ahead of him, feeling terribly conspicuous.

"Zadkiel," Katherine rose as he entered the room, her smile warm as she nodded at the man approaching. Her hand rested on the table, taking in the way that he was looking at the room. She wondered if he had ever been in a restaurant like the one that they were now standing in. Gesturing, she said, "Please, have a seat."

"Thank you, ma'am," he said, sinking into a chair. He waited for her to seat herself, then took the napkin from in front of him and spread it over his lap. He tried to stay focused, but his eyes kept darting around, trying to take it in, but also trying to determine if there was anyone near enough to overhear their conversation. Why had she asked to meet in a public place?

"Thank you for meeting me," he added, unfailingly polite.

"It's my pleasure. I'd hoped to speak with all of you at one time or another." She relaxed in her chair, resting her napkin on her lap and folding her hands. There was no one in the restaurant yet, the hours being what they were but she thought no reason to risk it. Picking up her glass, she sipped at the water for a moment.

"Why..." Zadkiel took a breath, let it out slowly, trying to calm his nerves. "Why, if you hoped to speak to all of us, did you have us all come together? In a group of strangers, it seems unlikely anyone could truly ask all of what was on their mind. And then that other woman." He stopped himself. It wouldn't be right to say anything rude about her companion, co-worker, whoever she was.

"I needed to know who would come, who might commit to what they were being asked," Katherine said simply. "You learn different things from people when they're in a group than you do when they're with you, alone. How they interact, for instance."

He nodded, picked up his glass of water and sipped, glad that his hands weren't shaking like he'd feared they would. He hadn't even looked at the menu yet. The sheer number of utensils on the table let him know he was in over his head. He'd never been to a restaurant in his life before coming to Seattle, and even now this was the first time he'd been anywhere where the wait staff didn't wear polyester, name tags, and call everyone 'hon'.

He finally looked at the list of entrees, needing something to keep himself from blurting out the question that had been rolling around in his head, louder than any other thought, for more than a week now. His eyes went wide when he saw the prices.

Katherine gently leaned over and placed a napkin over the column of prices. "It's my treat. Do you know the last time I had dinner out with a friend that didn't turn into a press conference?" The lines at the corner of her eyes crinkled with her smile, slight though it was.

She crossed her ankles, relaxing as she picked up her glass again. She made a note not to actually show him the wine menu. "Is there anything you like particularly? Fish? Vegetarian food? Seafood tends to be a specialty here but the tenderloin is fabulous."

"Have you ever heard of the Sons of Adam, Zadkiel?" Katherine paused for the moment as the waiter came to the table, uncorking a bottle of wine discreetly and pouring it into two glasses. She smiled at the man, tilting her head and he left, disappearing into the kitchen.

Taking a sip that only barely wetted her lips, she smiled. And waited.

"No, ma'am," he replied. He picked up his glass and took a sip as well, blinking as it rolled over his tongue. It was obviously a much better wine than what was served back at home, which was usually halfway to vinegar.

"They're a militant religious group," she said casually, watching his face carefully for the reaction. "In their opinion, anyone who carries the Wild Card virus is a carrier of sin. They were also significant contributors to my last campaign."

His eyes widened even more than before, but he didn't say anything right away. He had no idea what to say, except that it sounded like home. But home didn't have anything to do with the government. And home was in Oregon anyway, and she was a Washington senator.

"I'm sorry. I don't know what that has to do with me," he finally managed.

"They have an interest," Katherine answered. "In you. They didn't say what your status was-" She placed enough emphasis on the word to imply "wild card." "But once I realized you were off the grid, I decided to place you in the team. That's a rare thing, these days."

"They don't know. They shouldn't know." Now his hands were shaking, and he had to focus to lift his wine glass without it sloshing against the sides. He took another sip, then set it down, frowning into the liquid. "The Sons of Adam..." He stopped, not sure where the sentence was going. "The government isn't meant to know I exist," he said finally. He didn't know if he shouldn't even say that much, but it was too late. She knew.

"Not all of you will be as public as others," Katherine said. "Nor do I think you would choose that." She was still watching him. "I can get you on the Grid, if that's what you need, but it presents an element of risk."

To herself more than to him, although he didn't need to know it.

"No. I don't want to have to answer questions about why I wasn't on it before. And I don't want to be a... spectacle."

He turned his attention back to the food.

"I won't ask that of you," she said quietly. "Tell me, why did you leave?"

Just as she said it, the waiter placed two covered dishes on the table and it was all Katherine could do not to glare. Dammit.

When the cover was lifted from his dish, Zadkiel's eyes went wide. The rice - at least he thought it was rice - was black. He picked up his fork and poked at it, a worried look on his face. But certainly they wouldn't serve him something that wasn't edible. He picked up a small amount of it and put it in his mouth. His face twisted into a grimace, but he chewed and swallowed. He wasn't sure if it was the flavor or just knowing the color of it was unusual, but it didn't taste quite right. He turned to the other items on the plate.

He didn't forget the question she'd asked, and after a minute, he answered. "It wasn't safe for me there." It was no more than he'd told Del.

"Were you with the Sons of Adam then?" Katherine asked plainly. "I understand they persecute the Wild Card." Her mouth quirked in slight amusement. If only they knew that they'd sponsored one.

"My pleasure," Katherine answered, walking over to her car. She unlocked the door, a leg inside before she paused to say, "Do consider my offer."

Then she was gone, the car pulling smoothly from the curb.
