Tom sat on the front steps, contemplating the lawn. Someone needed to mow it, but he wasn't sure if they had a mower.

He heard the door open behind him and glanced over his shoulder. A girl he's seen around but never spoken to. "Do you think Ganesh could build a lawn-mowing robot?" he asked with a grin.

"Sure," Tom said, taking her hand and standing, managing not to trip over his feet in the process. He started down the sidewalk, his face tipped up towards the sun. "Get your vitamin D while you can," he said with a laugh. "Are you from around here, originally? I don't really know much about any of you, to be honest."

"Is your girlfriend going to mind that I'm stealing you away for a little while?" She walked with her face tipped up towards the sun, enjoying the warmth on her skin.

"None of us are from around here. Most of us grew up near Albany, New York. I was going to college there -- a music major at Saint Rose -- when Mickey fell into me. It's funny how life changes like that. One minute you're dancing around the living room happy that no one's home to see you acting like an idiot, the next you're waking up in some guy's bedroom with voices and music in your head and a big mental post-it note apologizing and telling you that oh by the way, you aren't real."

It wasn't quite like that. The note had been real, physical, and left there where she could see it and addressed to girl whose name I don't know and just in in case you wake up. But it sounded simpler this way.

"Girlfriend?" Tom asked, confused. "I don't... Oh! You mean Maxxie? She's not my girlfriend. She's my girl, and my friend, but definitely not my girlfriend. Her head would probably explode at the suggestion." He grinned. "So no, she won't mind. And you seem pretty real to me."

"Good. Because honestly? She kind of makes me nervous. She might be smaller than me, but I'm pretty sure she could break me in half, and she does that glaring thing when I'm singing in the living room. I don't think she likes me." Char grinned easily back at him.

"Of course I'm real. But Mickey didn't get that then, and it really is a bit weird to wake up in one place and be told that the other you is somewhere else entirely, and oh by the way, you've got three mental roommates, all of whom are male and like to leave the toilet seat up."

Tom snickered. "I'm now trying to picture a mental toilet seat being left up. It's an interesting mental picture. And I know she can snap me in half. Then again, I've been letting her routinely toss me on my butt for a few years." He grinned. "And honestly, she doesn't like much of anyone. I just got upgraded from someone she doesn't not like to friend." He puffed out his chest proudly, then laughed.

"Wait... you've known her for years and she's just getting around to calling you friend? Whoa..." Char's eyes were wide. "You must be persistent. Or stubborn. You've been letting her... oh, the lessons. I haven't been out when she's teaching yet. So you've been doing it a while? Is she a decent teacher? Should I try it? I can dance some, but not great. Really, I'm not a very athletic person."

"Two years in September, and yes, I'm persistent and stubborn. She's just... Maxxie." Tom shrugged as if it was no big deal, and it wasn't to him.

"You don't have to be very athletic to do it. I'm probably one of the most uncoordinated people on the planet. Somehow she convinced me that taking Tae Kwon Do would help with that. It doesn't, really, except when I'm actually on the mat. But it's kind of fun. And it would be good to know how to defend yourself, just in case, y'know? I mean, like, Jimmy wouldn't really have a problem because who's going to mess with that? But you're littler. And cuter." He looked at her out of the corner of his eye, one corner of his mouth quirking.

"So you were a music major? What were going to do with that? I haven't declared a major yet, much to the chagrin of pretty much anyone but me. If I was a poli sci person like Maxxie, maybe I could put down saving the world as extra credit, but I'm not. Heck, it might not even matter come September if I have a major or not, because I might not be allowed back to school."

"Jimmy's a football player, and he's still totally huge," Char said. "Nobody'd mess with him. But Mickey and Andy really aren't impressive guys, so they could probably use a bit of training too." She grinned brightly. "And of course I'm cuter. They're all big lugs."

She nodded, doing a little skip step along the sidewalk. "I was going to perform. But it's hard as hell to do that when you can't be anywhere consistently. I could do something online, but never virtually, since I can't interact with computers that way safely. Or I could, I guess, but I don't know if there'd be a danger." She glanced over at him. "Do you think they'll do that, keep people from schools? I think they'd still want the money you give them, even if they don't want wild cards. Everything would go bust without wild card income, wouldn't it?"

"I doubt it," Tom said. "That they'd go bust, I mean. There's more wild cards all the time, but at the same time, people who turn the card, 90% of them still die. The Black Queen and all. So it means that no matter what, it'll keep us a relatively low proportion of the population. Y'know? Now if people were to start boycotting places that wouldn't accept wild cards, that would probably have more impact. As it stands, I don't know. I mean, Maxxie and I were already kicked out of the dojang. I don't think it's that far a stretch for things to revert back to separate but quote-unquote equal."

"What do you know about music?" Char asked. "That's not really a non-sequitur, not like it sounds. I mean, what if we went and found a bunch of old songs that were meant to fire people up about equality and segregation. Just to start the social revolution. Alec suggested it." She grinned easily, fondness evident in the expression.

"But my point is, you're right -- getting people to support the wild cards and band with them when they're kicked out of places is important. And something we could use to our advantage if we can fire them up. Right?"

"Not a lot, except that I like it," Tom said. "But yeah, we really do need to get people on our side. Del and I are going to do a radio show, and I'm thinking like we have people going into the v-clubs to seek out hate groups and see what they're up to, that would be a good place to look for allies, as well. V-clubs, I mean. Not the hate groups. Obviously."

The smile at the mention of Alec threw him off slightly, but then he'd never actually talked to the guy. He didn't think he'd enjoy it much if he did.

"If I record things, maybe you could play them on the radio show? Get some exposure started?" Char suggested. Not that she was sure how to record things, but maybe someone could help her out with that. "I'd offer to help with the V clubs, but well..." She made a face. "There's a risk that if we got involved, Mickey might end up with it all up here." She tapped the side of her head. "We've already got a permanent soundtrack, newsfeeds, and a phone we can't refuse to answer easily. We do not need permanent clubs."
