Tom sat on the front steps, contemplating the lawn. Someone needed to mow it, but he wasn't sure if they had a mower.

He heard the door open behind him and glanced over his shoulder. A girl he's seen around but never spoken to. "Do you think Ganesh could build a lawn-mowing robot?" he asked with a grin.

Sun was possibly the most brilliant thing ever. It seemed like it showed its face so rarely here, and then Char was lucky if it just happened to be on a day when she was out. So as soon as she saw it peeking through her windows she got herself dressed and out the front door.

The question made her laugh. "Ganesh? Oh I bet he could. Or we could get goats to eat the grass. If you're looking for a no-work option other than mowing it yourself, I mean." She flopped down onto the stair next to him. "Hi."

"Hi! I don't think we've met. I'm Tom." He held out a hand to her, then bulled on. "It's not that I would mind mowing the lawn; I'm just not sure we have a lawn mower. I mean, I'd even risk the sunburn."

"Char," she replied, taking his hand and squeezing it before letting go.

"And I bet sunburn's one of those things you have to deal with after it happens." Because of course for Char, if she burnt, she only had to deal with it part of the time. It was another one of those weirdly complicated things. "No offense, but I don't think I'll volunteer to push a lawnmower, although you might be able to convince Andy to do it. He needs to get out of the room more. I'm sorry we haven't met before; I'm not around all the time."

"Oh, right. You've one of Mickey's." Tom smiled at her. "Why would Andy do it? I'm pretty sure this isn't the kind of grass he's into."

"He might do it if I nudge him, because otherwise the window seat is going to have the imprint of his bottom on it." Char rolled her eyes. "He makes whiskey, he eats, and he smokes, and sometimes he reads or something. He needs to get out. He needs friends." She grinned at Tom. "Be his friend. Make him see daylight. He'll probably share his weed."

Tom laughed. "I'm, um, actually allergic? To weed. Or to smoke, anyway. I get a headache. Pathetic, huh?"

Char made a small whimpering noise. "Oh. I need that excuse. Reason. Anything to get him to stop smoking it in the room. So, no weed sharing, which is fine. So, what is it you do for fun? When not contemplating the lawn, that is."

"I was also contemplating bubbles," Tom offered. "I was thinking about how it would be awesome if I had some bubbles. Y'know, the bottles with the little wand inside?"

"Oh yes!" Char clapped. "I had those when I was a little girl all the time. We'd blow them and chase them. Sometimes we'd try to catch them on the wands so we could try to blow double bubbles and sometimes we'd try to catch them on our hands, which never worked."

"Oooh, yeah." Tom wrinkled his nose. "That would be bad. Well, if you want to help and have some free time, you could maybe research places where it might be good to go looking? Or even in the real world, where we might be able to seek allies? And yes, we'll totally play music you pick if you want. It's not really a music show, but a few songs here and there would be awesome."

He stumbled over a crack in the sidewalk and flailed for the next few steps until he finally got his limbs back under control. He turned and smiled sheepishly at Char. "Don't worry. You can pretend we're not together if I knock over a display or something."

Char offered an arm, ignoring the part where she was smaller than him. "Lean on me, and you won't trip. And neither will I, right?" She grinned at him. "And I can research places in the real world, sure. The best research is done by just going out, seeing where jokers are able to go safely, where people can gather. And those places might be where trouble starts to happen, too, and they'll need help staying in business. We could go out exploring all the dance and karaoke clubs."

Tom linked his arm through Char's. "I'm a terrible dancer. You might want to ask JT about going to dance clubs. Maxxie likes dancing, too, and Del. I don't know about karaoke. I can mostly carry a tune, if you put it in a bucket."

"Enthusiasm is more important than tune in karaoke." Char laughed. "Ask Ganesh; I even convinced him to sing once. I'll talk to JT and Del about dancing, and Maxxie too, if you swear she won't break me." She grinned, nudging him with her hip as they walked. "What do you like to do for fun that's social, then, if it's not dancing or singing?"

"She won't break you. And I didn't say I wouldn't go along, just that I'm not much a dancer and you might not want to be seen with me. As for what I like to do, I like to read a lot, which isn't all that social, I guess, but I like to give people the books I've read and liked just to be able to talk to them about them. I like listening to music, going to concerts. I love playing music, although I'm more a kind of folky guy, which generally will get you laughed at in college, so when I want to jam with people I have to find guys who are like three times my age. I play guitar and bodhran. I like video games, too... especially the music ones. We should play sometime when you're out! You can sing and I'll play guitar and we can get other people in on it, too. Y'know, next time when it's raining which is pretty much always. As long as we're not busy saving the world."

Tom squeezed her arm against his side, beaming down at her. "Oh, look! This is one of my favorite stores." He nudged her in the direction of a music store that also had all kinds of other novelty-type stuff. "Who knows? We might even find bubbles here, too."

"I like all music, even folk music, and folk music is the kind that can be subversive so maybe you do know some of the songs of the sort I was thinking we could make anthems for wild cards." She bounced happily at that thought. "You can play, I can sing. It'll work wonderfully, just slowly, since I'm not out all that often. And I'd love to play games with you. Unlike some people, I actually like getting out and being social."

She grinned to see the music store, and followed his lead as he shifted direction to go in. "Musical bubbles? When I was a little girl, I remember we had this game with bubbles that we sang into. And our words would float away and pop somewhere else and the person there would hear our music. I loved it."

"It was virtual, and I was around five, so I wasn't worried about how it worked." Char grinned. "And even now, if I could go back into that virtual world, it was so charming to send little song bubbles to friends far away that I'd do it all over again."

Tom shrugged. "I don't know that I'd have anything to talk about with him," he said. "Although if I plan to go into the v-clubs I'll probably need his help to make sure that people can't trace me back to reality if they had a mind to. Even though I'm going in to recruit allies, if someone takes issue with it, I'd rather they weren't able to somehow find where we live, y'know? Because if there's some crazy weirdo out there who would do something like that, I would be the one to find him or her."

"How do you know you can trust people when you meet them in there?" Char asked, honestly curious. "I mean, you're not exactly telling the truth about who you are. What if they aren't either?"

"You don't," Tom said simply. "I don't really plan to lie about who I am, though. I may not give away details like, y'know, where I'm actually from and that kind of thing, but I'll use my own name - Tom is pretty common anyway - and be pretty straightforward about things. That I'm a Wild Card. That I'm trying to help Wild Cards maintain their rights. Y'know? Just talk to people, get them thinking, and maybe, hopefully, acting. Not just in the virtual world but in the real world."

"Go viral with it," Char said, considering it. "It's a good tactic. Like the old flashmobs. One person starts and everyone else joins in, only this is all over the place. Pick a piece of music and everyone sings along, wherever they are."

"That's a good idea," Tom said, smiling at her. "Or, like, have everyone create a sticker or a flyer or something, and on a certain day, have them hand it out or stick it up all over the place, or something like that. With just some simple message."

"Ooh, look, I found one," he said, holding up a tray with one of the big bubble wands. "I wonder what's going on with wild cards in the rest of the world. I haven't really looked that much into it."

The simple words set off a cascade in Char's mind, and she turned away for a moment, fingers pressed to her temples as she tried to get it under control, pushing the newsfeeds back. They never made sense to her; she didn't have the ability to filter through them. "There's news out there," she said quietly, "but it needs to be filtered. Made sense of. We should look into it, because if it's only bad here, that's leverage in some way, right?"

Blinking, she took a deep breath before she smiled at him again. "Have everyone grab a pen and write a slogan on their arms or their forehead. Wearable art. Something like... human rights for all humans and wild cards are human too... one for each arm. Or maybe not even so blatant, because people might be afraid of being discriminated against. But something that says we're all human."

"Isn't that part of the point, though? To be afraid, and to do it anyway, because it's the right thing to do? There's no way to advocate for the rights of wild cards without being discriminated against. We have to do it anyway, and we have to get people who aren't wild cards to do it. Not that I want to put anyone in danger, but if someone who's maybe on the fence about things actually did get discriminated against, they would see what it's like every day for people who can't hide what they are. I mean, I'm a wild card but no one has to know it if I don't want them to. I know that I'm lucky I'm not a joker."

"Because you can look, and act, completely normal. Jokers can't." Which was something Char understood all too well. She herself might have been a nate, but Mickey was an Ace and a Joker, and he trapped them all in this Joker life of changing places. "I'm lucky because nobody can tell Mickey's a joker just by looking. When he's out, they can tell he's insane. But until they realize we swap places, they don't know about the rest of it."

She picked up the giant bubble wand from the shelf. "So we have to ask nats to sacrificed themselves for us. But they'll want to do it, because there's strength in numbers. If everyone's doing something, then people see it as the right thing. Which is why discrimination works: everybody does it. If we want to reverse discrimination, we have to get everybody doing something else."
