Shopping with acquaintances (Jesse)
Charlie was a good partner. A very good partner. Oddly enough he'd make this sort of trip even if he and his partner hadn't become so very close. He cared for her, and was more than willing to take on any task she might have. He was up to the challenge. Thankfully, this particular challenge would have a very happy ending...eventually.

Jennifer had said that she needed some things from the store, and realizing he did as well, he'd offered to pick up whatever she might need. She hesitated at first, but the way he just nudged her now and then about it, she finally relented. When he finally got the list, he read over it and then nodded. He'd have it for her that evening when he came over. Yes, sometimes he stayed at her place, so it really wasn't that difficult. Of course, he added a few things to the list that he thought she might appreciate.

He stood in front of the boxes and stared. He wasn't lost in which one to get, so much as thinking about the varieties that were available.

"They don't taste like strawberries." He held one box in his hand, not at all ashamed of how it might sound. "And, do you really need glow in the dark?"

"I know how to look for them. And you're not a pervert to look for the right kind. Unless you're doing something to them, like putting them down your pants. Actually that would be illegal if you walked out and didn't pay for them...down your pants." Charlie was either not getting that his fellow male travel was highly uncomfortable, or he was willing to help the man through it.

"Actually if this was just their business, we wouldn't be buying the other items. We'd make them buy it. It'd all be under their control, and then we'd be..figuratively screwed. We wouldn't be literally screwed. We probably would never be screwed." He just continued to look for just the right box with just the right words on it.

"Are you afraid of this? Do you and your gal talk about these things?" Jesse and Jennifer would probably agree that this was not the conversation the detective needed to start or even consider...ever. "If you're uncomfortable with this, how do you have sex with her? It's all the same thing, it's all related."

"It is just their business and she does generally buy it, but these circumstances are... whatchacall it. Different."

Jesse shook his head and rubbed at his eyes with his hands. Pressing in. Why was Charlie standing so close? Was it so hard to understand what he was getting at? This was not the time, nor the place. This was not a conversation Jesse wanted to have.

"It ain't the same." He was horrified. "It ain't the same at all. We don't talk about it in great vast details, and we don't gotta. Buyin lady products is not... I'm goin over here, Charlie. You just stay right there. I'm gonna get what I need, and I'm gonna go home and try to forget about this. So're you."

He scanned the shelves as he moved and discovered what he needed was right behind where Charlie was.

"I'm gettin drunk when I fuckin get home. That's all there is to it. So help me, if I even think yer tellin ... anybody... anybody ... about this... I'll make you drunk too. Just right away. Instantly. Drunk. Fuckin drunker than you ever been in yer life."

Charlie just stood there and smiled a bemused smile. There was something he was missing. His smile grew as the Southern fellow returned after walking away. So, Jesse did want to talk?

The smile faded as he realized that that was not what he wanted at all. His lips turned ever so slightly toward a frown.

"I don't think getting me drunk would help you. I talk more drunk. And, why wouldn't I tell anyone you are a supportive man who really loves his gal? You're a good man." Charlie was about to do the one thing Jesse probably did not want him to do. The one thing that could get him turned into a frog or sent directly somewhere else.

Charlie's hand lifted from his side and started heading directly for the Southern God's shoulder. Just a pat, that was all. Honest.

"It ain't..." Jesse started, then lowered his voice again. "It ain't about bein a good man or otherwise."

He picked up the box and put it in his basket, covering it with the less shameful condoms and was about to move on. Leave the horrible situation behind him. Literally.

Jesse turned around when Charlie patted him. He really was tempted to do something. Make one of these boxes stick to the guy's hand. Something. But he just couldn't bring himself to be mean to the detective when he was obviously just clueless.

"Yer one of them that talks to the guy next to ya when yer peein, ain't ya? You will pick the urinal right next to a fella when there's three open on either side, and you'll just chat it up."

"Depends on if I need him to be really uncomfortable. I don't mind pissing beside a guy, but I like the space." Charlie was honest. The smile gone as he got serious for the moment. Just the moment.

"You know, I love my penis. Love my body, comfortable with it. But, whatever high and holy type created us, really did not like men. Put it into society's head that we have to be uncomfortable with something that sticks out of us. You can't really avoid looking." The detective shrugged. He'd seen quite a few dicks in his time; he didn't like it, but he'd accepted it a long time ago.

"It's okay if it makes you uncomfortable." His voice was even. He was stating a fact. "I'll let Jennifer know you're a very good man and you love your gal." He wasn't going to tell his own "gal" anything more than that. Well, not much more.

Jesse didn't know what to say to any of that. He had no words. All he could do was shake his head in disbelief and turn away from Charlie and the godforsaken aisle.

He was sure that he'd run into Charlie again in the future, but he hoped very much that it wasn't in this store, ever again. Or, he was thinking, while he was peeing.

Had he just said to not make mention of this encounter? Ever? To anyone? And there he was, saying he was going to tell Jennifer that they'd seen one another. She just did not need to know, in Jesse's opinion. But he wasn't going to get that through to Charlie.

So the only thing to do now was to pay and leave. Quickly. Immediately.
