oh, now you're just taking things too far. (eric)
Lestat did not need as much rest as younger vampires of his kind did; in fact, he'd mostly gotten away from the Hells Bells of his youth, from the sound of dawn approaching feeling like a death knell.

But sleep he did, shortly after the sun came up, and he'd wake just before sunset. Fully fed and strong, he could withstand the sun--and had, in the dessert. The sun still put him to sleep, though, whether he wanted it to or not. There was only so hard he could fight it.

When he awoke this evening, in his beautifully appointed apartment made to look just like his home in New Orleans, something caught his eye. He was reaching into the wardrobe for a jacket and shirt to wear, something eye-catching.

That was when he saw it.

The heart on the mirror. A lipstick-drawn heart. And a square in the middle, a picture.

Holding his chosen garments, Lestat crossed the room in the blink of an eye, grabbing the picture up.

Eric. Eric in the park. During the day.

Lestat growled. It was a low, angry, predatory growl.

The clothes were donned in a flash. And he was out the door in a blur. Eric was out during the day? Eric, whose particular brand of vampire was so vulnerable to the sun?

Once he was on the street, he pursued Eric with a single-mindedness that rivaled actual obsession.

Lestat didn't need to be told that. He knew it. He'd been alive and a vampire long enough to know that, quite simply, many people were not worth the effort, or had purposes that did not do a thing for him.

I might have to meet them.

There was a mostly imperceptible raising of the hair on Lestat's spine, at least until Eric continued speaking. Even so, should the other vampire in any way disturb Hannibal or River--especially River--Lestat would make his existence harder.

Rare indeed.

"Do you believe that certain people make exceptional vampires, based entirely on the traits they possess as people?" His eyebrow raised. "Or is it just a roll of the dice, like human genetics? Chance?"

Eric didn't miss the moment of tension, how could he? They were the only two in the room, and they'd just spent what had turned out to be an unfortunately intimate moment. These humans meant much to Lestat. Again, not a new concept in general.

"I believe that it's certain people." Eric nodded. "I know a few vampires that should never have been turned."

Bill Compton for one. What a lousy excuse for a vampire he was. Pathetic. Whiny. Still hanging onto his human life. Trying to live in the human world at peace with them because of the synthetics.

"I for one would never make a vampire of somebody I didn't want to spend a good amount of time with. The death rates of our fledglings are very high. The first year must be spent very close to the maker, or they risk much. Most of the time, makers and their children are lovers at some point as well."

I know a few vampires that should never have been turned.

Flash of Nicki, the mad violinist. Painful, gut-wrenching sight of him missing his hands. The box that contained his violin, and speaking to it, after Nicki'd gone, into the fire.

Flash of Louis, the goddam idiot, all of his sentimentality. There was much less pain here, but still. It was there. Clear, sharp image of visiting that stupid hovel his fledgeling had called home during his body swap and begging him to turn him, to help retrieve his powerful body, to just help.

Lovers. Lestat chuckled. It was true he'd chosen most of his children for vengeance of some kind or their looks. Gabrielle and Nicki were perhaps the most purely motivated creations Lestat had.

But now he couldn't help but think about what sex must be like between River and Hannibal. It was like he'd never understood that such a thing might go on before. And then it refined, into just River. Hannibal was beautiful, but he was not a telepath. What must it be like to be with someone who knew what you were thinking, what you wanted...

His mouth might've been hanging open.

This was not helping.

Eric watched Lestat, the wheels turning behind those strange inhuman eyes. He had no idea what the other vampire was thinking, could not know. Wasn't entirely sure that he wanted to know.

"Lestat. You're going to start drooling."

"Yes," he said.

That was all, but he did snap back to himself somewhat, without apology.

The image of River was still in his mind, chased by that of Hannibal. What Lestat would not give for the ability to have sex, just then. Even though he knew it was not half as amazing has the Blood.

"Well, they're worthy of it," he muttered, as an afterthought.

He returned to the previous topic, for now. "Do you feel any different yet?"

"The obnoxious lust has passed." Eric offered. "But other than that, no. I can tell no immediate difference."

He imagined now what Lestat had been thinking about. His pair of humans. Sharing with them the things that not only he had spoken of, but what Eric had stated as well. The thing that he had told Beauty about and had gotten such a blush in return.

"Perhaps nothing has changed. Perhaps it's something I'll discover when I least expect it."

Lestat chuckled. Obnoxious lust.

"Something always changes," Lestat said. "Any time blood is exchanged."

His tone suggested that this was not always a good thing. "I'm sure it's changed me, too."

He smirked at the idea of possibly being able to do some of the things he knew Eric could. Walk in the sun. Have sex....

"That's what I'm hoping for." Eric nodded. He'd come up with this little experiment to see what would happen to himself, but that didn't mean he wasn't curious about what might happen to Lestat as well. They were mixing species here, there couldn't just not be any reaction. That flew against science. Hell, one or both of them ending up almost dead from the exchange would have been more welcome than nothing. Though, if that was going to happen, he thought it would have already.

"As I said, you might be able to walk in the day for a little while, but don't expect it to stay forever. That part isn't mine. At best on my own I can wander about in the day hours and get the bleeds after a bit. I can't walk in the sun without problems. I can be out for a while, but eventually it would kill me. Not to mention that it hurts."

Eric thought of what the sun had felt like prior to Baba's blood. He would have shuddered if he'd been human.
