When a Coffee Run Goes Bad (Fred and our good Mr. Mayor Heart)
Fred had continued to come help Jensen in the comm central of the Clocktower after their...understanding. Of course Jensen had occassionally turned on the little boy charm to pout at her just enough to ask that she come back. To help. Yep! Helping was now defined with randomly snitched smooches. Suddenly his job didn't suck quite so much.

Today there were some final beta tests being run to make sure he had all of the critical programs working properly with his OS. That meant there was no time on their hands. Part of him was tempted to see how far Fred was willing to take those smooches, but decided he should probably behave himself and take them on a coffee run. All of the cups, makers and cupboards were bare of the essential goodness anyway so he suggested they go get some together. Maybe grab a sandwich while they were at it. He whined that he was running on empty as they left.

His goofiness increased the more fresh air he got. He didn't get out enough lately. It led to Fred getting her ribs tweaked from behind and him looming over her shoulder as he made to bite at her neck and spoke in a cheesy Dracula accent. "Perhaps you still have some caffiene in your blood system."

Fred didn't exactly squeal when he started walking her in, but she did laugh when he added the words and the knees. He was definitely sillier than she had originally thought. Truthfully she isn't mind it; it was different from the brooding and/or rather serious types she usually found herself liking. Even Wesley hadn't been this silly or...hands on.

"Just remember computer geniuses can't live by caffeine alone, no matter how much Mountian Dew would them to think otherwise. Sometimes you've got to throw a little food into the mix." She wiggled a little to get free and away from those knees. She looked awkward enough on her own sometimes. "So, after today I guess you're on your own."

She wasn't sure how she felt about it. She was beginning to trust Jensen, even if their initial meeting hadn't gone well at all. She'd miss working with him. But, she knew that couldn't last forever; she wasn't even sure she wanted it to. She did like the thought of going back to work on the City issuses she'd been concerned with for some time.

With all that was going on inside and out of the brainy female's head, she'd not noticed a particular government official.

Jack recognized Fred's giggles immediately. When he looked up, he rather wished he hadn't. He swallowed. He hadn't exactly expected her to move on this quickly.

Once the pair were up at the counter and hopefully otherwise occupied, he decided now was most likely the time to try to slip out. He stood and attempted to edge his way around the back of the line toward the door.

"What?" He blinked in astonishment when she said he'd been on his own. "But...!" His expression was kind of like he'd just been told Santa Claus wasn't real. "No. I don't want to be o-.."

Then his paranoid special forces training caught the movement at the back of the line. It was more than just someone trying to get through the crowd to the door. They were moving as if trying not to be noticed which of course drew Jensen's attention.

His brows went up when he recognized the guy, and it was too good to pass up. "Oh hey. It's our good Mr. Mayor Hates People in Tights." His smirk wasn't friendly in the least as he lifted his hand to wave at Fred's ex. "Hello, Mr. Heart!"

"You have to. It's..." Fred knew that look. Not particular Jensen's, but she knew the "something isn't quite right" look. Or "There's something moving that I need to see" look. She didn't ask what's wrong, so much as started to look in the same direction. Somehow she didn't wince when she realized who.

"Jake." She actually hissed softly. It wasn't until just then she realized she'd gone from a Jack to a Jake. Fred smiled slightly at Jack, almost apologetically, but what she was apologizing for was really up for discussion. She even lifted her hand to give the mayor, her ex, a small wave.

Jack gave Fred a nod and a terse smile and then turned his attention to her date. He tried not to glare, but instead just kept an impartial expression on his face.

"I don't believe we've met. If you're going to comment on my policies, the least you can do is introduce yourself."

He offered his hand to Jensen, though it was perhaps less of a polite gesture and more to make a point. It was going to be difficult to handle himself quite as professionally as he ordinarily would when running into someone on the streets who was angry about one of his policies.

He snapped to attention and saluted smartly instead of shaking this guy's hand. He'd rather spit on it first.

"Corporal Jake Jensen, sir!" That smug, smartass smirk was on his face still after he finished the salute. "I'd say at your service but I wasn't in the local branch of military so I'm afraid you're shit out of luck there."

Then, just to be an even bigger smartass he reached out to put his arm around Fred's shoulders to draw her into the conversation. "Say. Have you met Fred?"

Fred was pretty damn close to mortified. She tried to smile at Jack, but Jake was being...she wasn't sure what he was being. Again there was a hint of apology, and at the moment she wasn't sure of what she was apologizing for either.

"Hey, Jack. This is Jensen. Jensen, this is Jack." She hoped that if she could introduce them as if they were just every day people maybe it would be okay. Yes, they had somewhat introduced themselves, but this was awkward. She might have thrown in a quick look at Jake.

Jack kept his expression neutral as Corporal Jensen seemed to be rubbing Fred in his face. It did sting, but he wasn't going to give the satisfaction of wearing his heart on his sleeve.

It did seem that the women he fell for always moved on quickly. Alice had moved onto Hatter even while trying to rescue him from Wonderland. And now Fred. Of course, he did recognize the name of Fred's new boyfriend and that definitely irked him.

"No, from what I understand you're working for the Justice League because you sued Fred here for sexual harassment," Jack directed the statement to Jensen.

He didn't exactly understand why Fred would be with a guy who had sued her for sexual harassment and used it to get himself a job-her job, from what he'd understood of what she'd told him.

"See?" He turned a smile to Fred as he jabbed a quick point in Jack's direction. "This is what happens when an elected official tries to speak without all of the facts."

He turned that smile to Jack, his eyes sharp with that smug glint. "I didn't sue Fred. Your precious City sued Fred. And Dinah. Can't deny Dinah her due." Then he snapped his fingers in an ah ha manner. "But oh that's right. The City and the personssss representing it don't care about due process and facts. Innuendo. Half truths." That smirk got a little bit more vicious. "Don't forget it was the settlement the City wanted that put me where I am today."

His arm went around Fred's shoulders pointedly.

Fred gave Jake a confused look.

"Jake, he didn't know. The City maybe didn't give him all the facts. Though..." Fred looked at Jack, lips thin. "Your reaction to King Kong wasn't what I expected. I understand, sort of, but I thought you of all people would understand that sometimes you do have to take things into your own hands for the betterment of the people. Very few people were hurt, and it was all done without killing King Kong."

She didn't roll out of the arm around her shoulders, but she felt funny standing there with Jake when Jack seemed..actually he seemed a little angry with her. She supposed it made sense; they'd only broken up officially, finally, just recently.

"Then again, you can't give anyone special treatment. The City put everyone in a very odd position. Jake didn't sue us, even though the paperwork looks like it, and the City brought in the big hairy brute without giving warning. People were acting quickly." She was trying to smooth things over, seeing as these two men might have to deal with each other in the future somehow, maybe.

The surprise on Jack's face as Jake informed him that the City had arranged the lawsuit was evident. The case had been put on his desk with a memo that he needed to pay attention to it, but the way the papers had been drawn up it had clearly looked like Jake Jensen had filed the suit.

Fred was attempting to play devil's advocate, he supposed. He appreciated that she could at least see his side, unlike Zatanna. He sighed heavily.

"Very few people were hurt, but that woman that they saved almost died. She was falling to her death as a result of something that the Justice League did. Yes, they saved her-but perhaps there could have been a safer way to do so. I had a force preparing to go in there to perform an extraction, but instead a group with no outright loyalties marches in there and starts slinging their powers around, without any concern for the laws? Of course there's reason for concern."

He turned his attention back to Jensen.

"So I think it's safe to assume that Ms. Burkle didn't sexually harass you and Ms. Lance didn't assault you?"

There was just the slightest bit of poking fun at the fact that the case had read as if Jensen had gotten beat up by a woman.

The guy was baiting him as much as Jensen was baiting him first only Jack was being more subtle. You had to be a guy to see it probably.

"I think it's safe to assume that if you want to know if she sexually harrassed anyone you should ask her instead of the alleged victim." Take THAT, Jack Heartass!

"So tell me something." He locked eyes with Jack, his arm still loosely around Fred's shoulders but it was form only. Fred would be able to tell through its touch that he was ready to take it back in a heartbeat. "What laws did we break that wouldn't have been broken by your crack team trained and ready to handle a giant angry ape because that happens so often?"

Fred's brows furrowed. She could understand why Jake was upset with Jack and vice versus, but she was pretty certain that they shouldn't do it in the middle of a coffe shop. While people could figure out the members of the JLC, she suspected that this sort of public display would do no one any good.

"I didn't mean to," answering the question before it could be asked, Fred placed a hand to Jake's side to nudge him out of the way. " Why don't we have a seat and y'all can discuss the rescue somewhere less...in the way?" People had started to look. The brainy female hadn't thought for once they might be getting hostile because she was present.

"Jake? Jack?" She smiled hopefully. "Or we could go outside?" She had no idea what tat could lead to, did she?

Jack wasn't going to just sit down and have a cup of coffee with Fred and her new boyfriend. He kept his glare directed at Jake and didn't even look at the petite brunette.

"Outside would suit me just fine. I was on my way out anyway."

For a moment, Fred wondered if this was a bad idea. Maybe sitting down to have a nice cup of tea or coffee would be better. She looked at the two men then took a bit of a shrug she started for the door. Hopefully they followed without too much problem. If that was possible.

"You know everyone did the best they could." Still trying to diffuse the situation, even if she wasn't doing a great job of it. Or she was just talking to herself, depending on close the not so happy men were.

Jack headed for the door, sure that Fred and Jake would be right behind him.

He wasn't listening to what Fred had to say, but once they were out in the street in front of the building, he turned his attention to Jensen and crossed his arms.

"Vigilantism is illegal, to start listing the laws that your team broke."

Oh he followed, shaking his hands out to loosen up his tendons. His eyes narrowed on the back of that stupid blonde head and thought up about seven different ways he could lump it up.

Once on the street and Jack faced him in that ridiculously guarded pose, Jenses squared off from him looking relaxed.

"Define vigilantism, according to the law." He bobbled his brows. "Bet you can't."

While one looked as if he were prepared to give a lecture, and the other looked as if he were ready to ignore said lecture, Fred was still uncomfortable. This didn't make any sense at all. They were going to fight about the King Kong incident? Or maybe she was reading too much into their stances.

"I'm sure he knows it. We don't have to bet on it." The brainy female tried to smile reassuringly. She was probably failing. "You don't have to. It's...we..this is kind of silly, isn't it? I'm sure if we all sat down, Dinah and Jack and maybe an unbiased party or something, sat down, we'd get this all fixed, yes?"

She gave them a hopeful look this time. She would have touched them had she thought it was a good idea, maybe just a little pet on the arm for each. Only, one was her ex, and the other was a little more than a growing interest. Touching didn't seem like the right thing to do.

Jack uncrossed his arms, but his pose stayed somewhat stiff. He rolled his eyes at Jensen. Was the man actually insinuating that he didn't know the definition of a word he was using? It was ridiculous. Fred was all but ignored.

"A vigilante is anyone who takes the law into his own hands, usually with use of excessive violence. I believe that even before this team was formed, your Black Canary, Batman, and Green Arrow were all guilty of this. It was just a lot harder to look the other way when they started doing things this blatantly."

After all, he knew that crime was down thanks to those three, even if they used more violence than he would have preferred. But acting in secret was very different from acting in public and basically sticking their proverbial tongues out at all of the laws that were in place in the City.

"Wrong!" Jensen looked smug as he jabbed a finger in Jack's direction but kept to poking air instead of the mayor.

"By definition, and I quote the Oxford dictionary, is 'a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate.'" He smirked as he made a point of leaning towards Fred but never taking his eyes from Jack, and he spoke in a mock whisper. "I looked that up after that statement."

Then he straightened. His eyes held a hard glint to them even though his expression was still glib. "So tell me Mr. Mayor, what legal agencies in the City are adequate to take on King Kong, the Joker or Godzilla since I hear that happened?"

"We don't have to work outside the law. Avengers worked in the law. They were part of the law, they are part of the law, the law's involved in there somewhere." Fred looked between the two men.

"There's really no need to be so hostile toward each other; we can work this out." Yes, this was getting to be silly. It was as if they were goading each other, not at all being the sensible or intelligent men she thought they could be.

Jack glanced at Fred then.

"As I told Zatanna, I would like a meeting with your leader. Assuming that the Justice League plans to work with the law, that would reasonably be the best place to start in carving out boundaries to make sure that the group is using their abilities responsibly and not just beating people up because they can."

He leveled his gaze at Jensen.

"Or because they thought that said people had broken into their computer systems," he said blandly.

"Oh, right!" He snapped his fingers then wagged a finger at Jack. "Fishnets B. Say. Didn't I see a whole bunch of photos of you and her getting all up close and personal? There was speculation that something torrid might have been going on behind the curtain." He raised his brows in an Ah HA look. "That was what, a few weeks ago?" Intimating it was before Fred broke up with Jack. "And just before the vote that put you where you are. Doesn't our lovely magician work, y'know, magic?" Now his eyes held that hard glint in them. "Might suck if someone sent in a suggestion that might call the voting into question. Anonymously, of course."

Fred blinked at the both of them. Her lips brows furrowed as they both went to very strange places, or more they seemed more personal attacks. She looked from one to the other; why were they doing this? She didn't know what to say exactly to what was going on, and she had no idea why this was happening. Or if she did, it was buried deep in denial.

"Y'all really don't have to do this. Y'all are better than this." She just shook her head. "I gotta get something to eat, and I think I left something...somewhere." She looked at both men before shaking her head again and started to walk away.

"It's like they gotta measure their dicks. All cause one wrote a statement he's gotta right." She was definitely talking to herself as she walked rather determinedly away.

Jack laughed-actually laughed-at the things Jensen was hinting at. They were getting ludicrous. Fred had been there on the night in question when the press had made up that ridiculous story about Zatanna.

"So you're going to accuse one of the members of your own team of hijacking an election? I'm sure that will help the public's perception of all of you."

He watched as Fred walked away, feeling a bit bad that they'd upset her. That said, he was on the verge of walking away himself.

"Looks like you're losing your girlfriend's attention," he said pointedly.
