Boys and girls - Fight Club Challenge (Veronica)
It was a typical day for Jesse Custer. He moved about The City, watching out for things he could help with. Seeing if there were any new faces about. Occasionally playing with the stupid fucking phone thing that The City had given him. Occasionally even doing the right thing with it. He had breakfast in a diner and lunch in a diner. It didn't compare to Zoe's cooking, of course. Nothing compared to a nice home cooked meal. But Jesse just wasn't the kind of guy who spent a lot of time doing his own work in the kitchen. There were simple things he could do, eggs, bacon, pancakes for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. But sometimes it was just easier to eat someplace else. Besides, it meant that he didn't have to clean, either.

He was currently standing outside said chosen lunch establishment, lighting his post meal cigarette. He looked in the direction of a couple of young guys who were having an argument about god. He shook his head.

"May not be no God here," He said to himself. "But he existed at one time."

Not to mention there was, well, himself. Maybe people didn't pray to him and ask him to bless their dinners and watch over their sick grandmas, but there were people here who knew very well what he could do. People who trusted in his abilities. Maybe one or two who revered him. Just a little.

He turned to walk from diner and continue on his random path through The City and came face to face with a blonde. At least he didn't actually run into her like he had Castiel. Didn't do much good to be God if you couldn't so much as tell when another person was walking toward you.

"Scuse me, darlin" He gave her a smile and waited for her to go around so they didn't end up doing that stupid dance trying to get by one another.

Jesse looked down at the girl again, the smile still on his face. It widened a little when he recognized who she was. He remembered her just fine from his time in the asylum and wondered if she remembered, too.

"Veronica." He said her name to get her to focus. "Good t'see ya outside of the asylum."

He wasn't sure how she'd feel about this. He'd told her things and she'd made it pretty clear that she'd thought he really belonged where he was. If she brought it up, though, he supposed that he could prove it all to her.

And hopefully not ruin her day.

When he said her name, the day on the couch watching cartoon donkeys and bears rushed back in. Veronica had told him not to take his pills.

He'd told her he had all the powers of God.

"Hi, Jesse," she said, brightly. Inside, she wondered if he still thought he had all that power.

It was less than her favorite thing to be reminded about the asylum, but there WAS the fact that everyone else had to be there, too. "How're things treating ya? Cookies as good out here?"

"Yanno." He laughed. "I don't think I've had a cookie since I been out."

Jesse wondered if he had some kind of psychological avoidance going on or if it was just because he didn't have cookies handy, and nobody came around with carts of them to give him.

"Things're pretty much just back to the way they were before. Yer lookin good." He looked her over. "Guess I didn't get a real good peek atcha before, didn't realize you were so short." He didn't mean it maliciously. In fact, he rather liked the smaller ones. Not that he had any objections to women of any size. But the smaller ones were somehow cuter. Made him feel like he had to take care of them more.

"That's a shame. I make a mean snickerdoodle."

Veronica put her phone into her bag, just as the word 'short' resonated. She looked up at Jesse and arched a brow. "I may be small," she said, "but I'm the boss." She waited a beat. "I have a t-shirt at home that says so."

She sighed. "You look good, too. Whatever they were giving you certainly wasn't doing you any favors."

"I don't think it was doin nobody favors, darlin." Jesse shook his head. "All I've heard from others is that they were miserable. Plus, now we got somebody killin the staff from Arkham, seems like revenge killin t'me."

He hadn't seen anything new in the papers in the last week or so. But that really didn't mean anything, did it? It could just mean that they hadn't found anything yet. That corpses were waiting for discovery somewhere.

Though, to him, it seemed as if the first killings and the ones that followed weren't done by the same hand. He was no cop, and certainly no forensic specialist, but it just didn't feel right.

"I do feel better without them meds, though. No surprise, I guess."

"Rev..."

She'd been so busy thinking about the poltergeist and what it might mean that she hadn't heard anything about this. And it was worth going after. "Ffff. I suck," Veronica said under her breath.

She was far too focused on what Jesse'd said to understand how he could go back to talking about medication, and when Veronica was focused...

"Do they have any leads?"

Jesse looked at the tiny blonde with a bit of confusion in his eyes.

"I don't know. I know what they got in the newspaper. I ain't a cop." Though, he supposed he could find out. But why? He wasn't going to mix himself up in any of it. "What'dya wanna know for anyway? Little girl like you can't do nothing for them. They got two of the City's best on it. Unless you got magical deductive powers, you won't do nothin but get in the way or get yerself hurt."

He wasn't trying to be mean with is statements. But it was true. He knew of both of the detectives assigned to the case, and there wasn't a whole lot that could be added. They had reputations that promised they'd get things done. If it could be solved, those two would do it.

Little girl like you can't do nothing for them.

The kids at Neptune High turned on Veronica Mars when her father was suspected of botching Lilly's murder case. They called her a bitch--and with reason. You didn't tell a Mars 'can't' and expect them to play nice--least of all this particular Mars.

Eyebrow raised, Veronica dug her P.I. license out of her bag, as well as her FBI badge. True, it said 'intern' on it, and not agent, and it was more like an ID card than an actual badge, but it still said her name, and FBI. She held them up one at a time before putting them back in her bag.

"Ignoring that what you just said is ragingly sexist, I didn't plan on getting in the way or getting hurt," she said. Veronica didn't know any of the law enforcement team here in the City, at all. And she always thought something would get missed. The more eyes the better.

"Didn't mean it sexist." Jesse said. "I guess a lot of what I say is, though. Can't help it. I just meant that yer just gonna get in the way is all. They're bona fide agents of whatever kind of FBI this city's got." He nodded at her put away badge. "Yers just says intern. I ain't an educated man, but I know that means you ain't an agent, you ain't even paid."

He knew strong females, and knew he was just digging himself deeper into the mess, but he couldn't stop himself.

"Veronica, I'm just sayin that you ain't no superhuman. I know a good number of you little ones here in this place turn out to be. The details given in the paper ain't pretty. I don't think you wanna go pokin around here. And I ain't sure yer gonna be welcome to, neither."

She sighed.

Veronica did not want to completely throw a tantrum and explain to Jesse why she was qualified to do just as much as all of the cops in this place. She really did not.

You ain't even paid.

"You don't hear me telling you that you can't have all the power you say you have, just because you aren't God," she snapped.

"I investigate things. It's what I do. The P.I license, the internship... it's the only thing I've ever really wanted. I take care of myself just fine and I've never impeded an investigation in my life."

"Oh, but I am." Jesse grinned. "Ya might think I was some wacko who really belonged in that place, but you'd be wrong."

Jesse let his cigarette drop and crushed it out with his boot heel. He was already sliding another out of the pack to light up, not thinking about it.

"You want t'be a good investigator? You learn which ones you stay outta while you ain't got the right credentials. There's shit you don't know yet. Yer just learning. Ya ain't hard enough yet t'be able to handle this one. It ain't like they're just shootin people, here."

He thought of the details he'd learned from the papers, more details than he thought an average paper would have given.

"A P.I. ain't a cop, hon. Yer internship is workin ya on the way to what ya need. But a P.I. don't have the same abilities as a trained cop. As two trained detectives. You wanna go talk to em, do it. But don't you go sticking yer nose in without doin that. You could getcherself killed. Yer cute, yer little, and yer blonde, and I ain't no fuckin idiot. It's your types that usually get into the most trouble. You should find out what yer trying to help with before you jump into the pool. There's sharks in there."

Okay, Veronica thought. So Jesse was kind of a dick. That made sense, right? She figured God was kind of a dick. Considering that he'd allowed Lilly to die, and Logan's mom to vanish, and her mom to...

She scowled at Jesse, outright. "You don't know me," she said. "You don't know what I've lived through, and the cases I've already solved. You don't know what I can handle! You might have a point, here, but I really don't care, because you're making assumptions about me that have no basis whatsoever in my reality, this reality, or your reality. I've dealt with killers. I've put a few away. I've been on their lists. Don't stand there and act like I'm a damsel in distress!"

Jesse shrugged. "Didn't say nothing 'bout you bein a damsel. But I got a feelin about who is doin this, or at least who has a hand in it. You don't wanna be messin around with that."

Certain details had felt to Jesse as if Hannibal Lecter had been involved. He didn't even want real cops to have to deal with that guy, let alone somebody just coming up in the profession.

"What's it with you little ones always gettin mad at shit that you don't need to get mad at? Besides, that kinda shit I could find out, easy. I could tell you right now if you could hold yer own."

"Little ones?!" Veronica stopped herself from putting her hands on her hips, like her mother would've done. The last thing she needed right now was to channel her mother. "You just have very few people skills, Jesse. Gonna need to work on those."

"Fine! So then tell me!"

Any semblance of reasonable Veronica was gone, completely.

"Now hang on there. Just cause I ain't got your kinda people skills don't mean I don't got 'em. I just happen to be raised in a different time and place than you. When a man could speak his mind and give a gal an endearing nickname without being accused of being a sexist jerk." Jesse shook his head. "The bitch of it is, you put an acceptance of being called sweetheart into yer head, and so far, all you little ones are exactly the type of girl the South likes. We tend to breed them like you. Fiery and headstrong. Cute and tiny."

Jesse put the cigarette in his mouth and held it there with his lips, taking her hand. He didn't really need to take her hand, but they tended to believe more if you did something they could see, too.

"Born August 17. Yer daddy paved the way for ya in this line of work. You love him, but you think yer better than him when it comes to this. You are good at whatcha do, but I still don't think yer up to this one, and you've got a friend. Lilly. You were close. You've seen her recently, cause of a wish. You want me t'go on? Cause I can. Can tell you all about her, and your past. Tell you what you've done since you've been here, too. Tell you things you don't fuckin wanna know. Are we gonna stop being twelve now?"

Veronica stood there, stunned. When Jesse grabbed her hand, she furrowed her eyebrows, fighting the urge to pull it away. The thing was she wanted to know if it was true. She wanted to know if Jesse really was nuts, or if he knew things no one could--unless they were God.

Are we gonna stop being twelve now?

Veronica blinked at him, completely unsure of what was going to come out of her mouth next. When the sound came, it started with a strange halted squeak. There wouldn't have been any kind of sound if he hadn't mentioned her seeing Lilly. No one else knew that except Logan.

"Are we?"

She believed it, now. Jesse had the power he said he did. It was very God-like to pull something like that out of nowhere, make it fresh and on the surface of things again, and then ask to drop it.

She couldn't apologize for things. She was bad at it. She was too "fiery and headstrong." "I didn't want to yell at you," Veronica said, instead. And that was true. Her voice was borderline sad, now.

"Hey." Jesse softened. As he always did when females started to threaten to cry. "Hey, none of that. I shouldn'ta been so hard on ya. I didn't mean to. I lost my temper. Don't... don't cry."

He hated when women cried. Not in a violent hate kind of way. It just made him so uncomfortable, especially when he caused it. Women shouldn't have any reason to cry unless it was about sad movies, or happy tears.

"Please don't. I'll do anything for ya, darlin, just don't cry."

The fight had been brief, but fierce. Again he'd gone too far with showing off his powers. He thought he'd learned his lesson with Mel. Apparently not.

"Wasn't gonna," Veronica said. "Okay. I'm... apparently not done being twelve." She waited a second. "Now. Now I am."

She arched an eyebrow. Interesting reaction to her becoming so down. This weak spot must be filed away in the brain for later.

"Yeah. I'm not going to cry. I just wasn't expecting to hear anything about..."

The stammer was enough of an indicator of her emotional state.

"About Lilly being here. I'm okay." She nodded, and then nodded again. "We're okay."

"Listen. It's my fault. I'ma dick. You were right. Just, my temper acts up and I gotta prove shit, so I do somethin drastic, and then somebody's cryin." Jesse shook his head. "And ya ain't gotta lie about it. I know that look, sugar. The look that could break any man's heart, long as he's got one."

He watched her for a moment, to make sure that the tears didn't slide down her face.

"Can we call a truce?"

Veronica smirked. She knew someone like that. Oh, boy did she ever. She half expected her phone to vibrate with a new text from Logan just because that's how her life worked.

"I'm not lying!"

The tone was a lot more playful now.

Can we call a truce?

Veronica nodded. That sounded really, really good to her. Also pissing off someone so powerful was probably bad, in the long-run. She'd much rather have Jesse as an ally.

"Truce. Friends. Happy, happy." She smiled. "So it sounds like I need to find something to investigate that isn't this." An eyebrow arched.

Jesse relaxed. He'd much rather be friends with people than enemies. He liked being friendly, he liked being able to see people places and have a nice chat. He didn't like having to worry about what somebody might try.

"Good t'hear it." His smile was quite big now. "There's plenty of weird shit goin on in this place. Plenty of stuff to look into. I'm sure that yer gonna have a great grand time doin investigatin things. Plus, ya got plenty of people to meet around here. All kinds. You never know who you might run across."

And he really didn't want Veronica to run afoul of Hannibal Lecter. If he was behind the murders, then doing anything to stop him or find out what was going on would be getting on his bad side. She might have to meet him, as everybody seemed to meet everybody here, but she didn't have to be on the wrong side of it.

Not to mention, the papers said something about two people involved, and Jesse just had no idea who that other person could be. Somebody just as bad as him, no doubt.
