Who: Kip & Leigh
What: Kip is kind of a stalker
Where: outside Leigh's house
When: Saturday afternoon
Every now and then, Kip just had to get out of the house. Isolation suited him most of the time, but when it got to be almost Spring, as it was now, he found himself experiencing intense cabin fever, and he just needed to go for a walk. In the warmer months, this urge to flee, to travel, and to escape, was easily satisfied by a quick sail around the lake in the Yesterday's Storm, his beloved boat. But in this in-between season, when the lake was still half-frozen and his boat was still in his garage, Kip had to settle for traveling on foot.
And though he told himself he had no specific destination, he knew from the moment he left his front porch which way he was heading. The number 28 was clear in his mind from the get-go, and as he passed units 4, 5, and 6, and then 12, 13, and 14, he began imagining Leigh's face and almost smiling to himself at the thought of her. He was in what passed for a good mood in his world, and he just wanted to see the one person who would keep him in that mood for a little while, who might make him feel something other than pain or nothing at all.
As he approached Unit 28, Kip slowed his pace and studied the exterior of the house, then stopped right at the edge of the lawn, studying the windows, the door, the car in the driveway, and the motion of the lake beyond the building. He wondered if he should knock on the door, but couldn't quite get himself to take that step, so he just kept on standing and staring, hoping to be seen.
